This may be the most over-analyzed movie in history. If any of the other original Star Wars movies went through this type of public discussion, it would have been even worse. I enjoyed the movie for what it was: an action-packed ride that made me laugh out loud (several times), surprised me with some twists, and put a tear in my eye. If a movie can do that, it is a success. There were certainly elements of this movie that were lame (Princess Leia "flying" like Mary Poppins was ludicrous) but at the same time it's a MOVIE, lol. It may in fact be the worst movie to have the Star Wars name, but the worst Star Wars is still pretty awesome. But what do I know, I enjoyed the prequels. First movie I ever saw in the theater was Empire during its original run. I laughed... I got teary-eyed... I liked seeing old friends return... I enjoyed the ride. Are there flaws? Uh, hell yeah. Did I roll my eyes a couple times. You bet! Even a cringe here or there. Was i perplexed? At times... I felt good coming out of the theater for this, as I had for TFA and R1. The prequels not so much, but I still had fun watching them. Hopefully IX will be good. It better have another return of an old fave. No Lando, no peace... I don't endorse the furry lifestyle, but when the Bobkitten is involved things can change mighty quickly... I felt more invested in Rey and Kylo in this one than I did the last one. Their onscreen chemistry in this was wonderful. And Mark Hamill did a fantastic job. He's an underrated actor who won't ever get a lot of work simply because he'll always be known as Luke Skywalker. It was a good movie overall, but some of the cheesy moments I could not wrap my head around (like the aforementioned Leia flying through space and surviving it thing). Also, the whole Finn/Rose/Poe story was almost pointless. I like the way Rian Johnson took risks. A lot of them. It's definitely not your typical Star Wars movie, which was good in a lot of ways. I think what I'm most confused about is, "okay, but where do they go from here?" Since I haven't seen TFA, I'm not seeing TLJ. I'll get around to it eventually, when my son gets back into Star Wars. (I did see Rogue One. I enjoyed it. JJ had only signed on for the first movie, but the original producer of ep 8 was "fired" because his initial vision didn't match and execs asked JJ to come back and finish it out. TFA blew this one out of the water. My issue is with the script. That could have used one or two more re-writes. I can't remember one scene that really reached me. Never did I feel that any of the main characters were in true danger. Big dumb action sequence in the middle. I'm happy Abrams is back for 9. I wonder how that sits with the typical male action movie fan, who generally wants a strong woman who's secondary to the male hero, such as Marion in the Indiana Jones movies. Overall I thought it was very good. At least the script didn't have the stupid overstated lines that George Lucas likes to throw in. ("If you strike me down I'll become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.") I'm not sure this will have the legs previous Star Wars movies have had. We saw the 2:30 pm show at Easton on Christmas Eve and it was maybe half full. We will get by. We will get by. We will get by. We will survive. I also couldn't get past the Leia scene.....that to me was the jumping the shark part of the Star Wars saga. Nonetheless, my other issues stemmed from the storyline and its non-sense of why bother to go find a code breaker when in reality you didn't need it, along with the scene essentially showing war-profiteers being bad on a casino island, which by the way seemed ripped off from Skyfall. Also, literally felt like the knock off version of Episodes 5-6 mixed together along with Luke Skywalker essentially being thrown away to come in and save all of 10 people and not only that fighting with Kylo Ren even though he was on another planet.....how in the hell does that work? Made zero sense and was lost. Some say that the mysticism of the force, I call the entire movie a stoner's session in Boyd Hall watching the originals and going, "How can we make the same thing, but 'better'???" The villains kind of suck, too, outside of Ren. I can't take any of them seriously. General Huxx may as well come from a Ninja Turtles cartoon. Personally was a huge fan of that movie with its storyline and fitted the story like a glove in the Star Wars universe.
