Who thought we’d be saying that after the Akron and Buffalo debacles?! OHIO remains the only MAC team to win a bowl game the last 2 years.

The rest of the games the MAC teams lost weren’t even close. Pathetic showing by the MAC.

The MAC is showing us how to lose interest in college football 🏈 real fast.

It begs the question why? Think about it, Toledo might be the biggest head scratcher. Many pundits thought they might have the easiest game of the lot. They even had a marquee quarterback who was on some draft boards. The Rockets not only lost, but did so in embarrassing fashion.

This bowl season is going to raise a lot of red flags for our conference. Thankfully our Bobcats did their best to salvage the conference's reputation, but it is going to take more than our impressive victory to save the MAC's honor.

I hate to say it, but I think what this shows is that when playing at the top of their game, this 2017 Ohio team could may well be the best team in the MAC. But they didn't deserve to be called that because they blew the last two weeks of the season.

Confirms my suspicions I have had the last couple of years that maybe the MAC is not as good as it's mid-major peers.

Someone had posted in another thread that the FCS schools were spending as much if not more than a good chunk of MAC Schools on football....kind of scary to think that. Only reason I bring that up is because when App State played us in 2015 at the Camiellia Bowl, they rolled in with a crowd that put us to absolute shame.

I agree, we have to find a way to play our best football every week. We were dominant against UAB and Toledo and horrible against UMASS, Buffalo, Purdue and Akron on defense.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

Toledo is not a headscratcher. They suck against the run.....hence why we have dominated them the past few years. They cant tackle backs built like Dorian or the guy from App State. When Dorian was out the last two games (unfortunate Akron tackle) that led to our demise the last two games. I love AJ.....however Dorian is our best overall back. Speed agility and just as much power as AJ. He is the X factor in our games when we need to keep running the ball. Didnt surprise me that he had a big bowl game.

Our secondary pass defense has to get better or schools who dont pass well will continue to have success....ala Akron. Buffalo will be much better next year and will pose a threat to the EAST.

Regardless of who had the toughest opponent, here are some stats that showed how badly the MAC fared this bowl season:

MAC teams were outscored 153-72.
The two teams that played for the MAC championship were outscored 84-3.
No MAC team scored in the fourth quarter.
MAC teams scored only 21 pts in the second half (Ohio-14; CMU-7)
The average margin of defeat for MAC teams was 31.5 pts; the smallest margin was 22.
The four teams that lost were outscored 93-24 in the first half (the closest halftime score was Duke 26-NIU 14).
Last year when the MAC went 0-6, only one game was decided by more than 8 points (Tulsa 55-CMU 10).

My Gawd is that an awful compilation of stats. Knee jerk thought is that it makes me feel stupid for following MAC football. It also makes me wonder what the past 5 bowl seasons have looked like in those statistics for comparison.

Knock off some p5 schools in September and all is forgotten. I like bowls. They are fun and I'm glad we have them, and I sure am glad we finally got one, but trying to apply meaning to them is futile.

The narrative has always been because the extra bowl practices are worth it.

If that was the case we should only see Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen play in the game. Get them some valuable field time against a non-conference opponent and get them ready for next year.

You’re right about the case for additional practice. The players get that regardless if they play in the game or not. I think the case for giving the players a paid vacation/reward for the hard work they’ve put in during the year also has validity. Even more so for the seniors. Their last rodeo for the most part.

I'll agree with that. Definitely need to reward the guys who have put in the work.

Our pass defense was horrible. We have to get better. We were ranked 109 out of 129 teams for the second year in a row in pass defense. If we did not play Hampton and Kent, we may have finished last. For the record, I know that we have to play Kent every year.

Particularly surprising to me was NIU's porous defense. Color man Ray Bentley two or three times commented on NIU's failure to stop Duke's QB Davis from his runs which netted 88 yards on 16 carries. Bentley was blunt in observing that either the NIU DC was failing to make needed adjustment or his players were failing to execute.

True, but let's not forget, Ohio played the weakest opponent of all the MAC teams in bowl games. Don't let UAB's 8-4 record fool you, they were whipped by a Ball State team that went winless in the MAC.

I'd have to say with Rourke returning for next year and winning our bowl game 41-6 it makes us MAC favorites once again. UAB's inexperience in this bowl will be forgotten and it will go down as a nice win for us. Think about the banner hanging in Peden next year "Bahamas Bowl Champions".

One conference still has a shot at having a worse record than the MAC -- the Pac 12. It's 1-5 with three games left (ASU-NC in the Sun Bowl; USC-O$U in the Cotton; and Wash-Penn St in the Fiesta). Utah is the only Pac 12 team to win so far.
