My personal taste on alternate uniforms isn't original, but I like the rule that if you're a traditional power with a uniform recognized nationally don't touch a single thing about the design.

If you're Ohio or Oregon or Maryland and your football history is...uh, underwhelming? Go crazy. Put a Warhol creation on your jersey. Mark Rothko helmets. Wear Shaq zebra shoes circa 1996.

Whatever.

When you're messing with Ohio's uniform, you aren't messing with some 100 year old tradition. These things are, what, five years old with the double stripes on the shoulders? The helmet design at Ohio has an historic shelf life of about 10 years (although I think they've finally stumbled upon something stable and lasting with this latest incarnation).

There's no dust-collected history book to live up to in this program. So create a culture and a style new and modern. Knowing your place in the college football landscape should be a guide to how you procede on things like this.

Ohio has a blank slate. They've decided to paint it black for now. I like it.

Going to school during the paw print years, I love the PAW. I would rather have a paw ripped off and changed slightly from another school by a local artist, then the clip art attack cat we had to buy and every high school whos mascot is bobcat or wildcat also uses.  most schools have several logos for their sports teams and it gets boring to see the attack cat on everything put out for OHIO

The paw print looks like a cheap clemson knock off IMO. Attack cat all the way

From what I saw of the game, the "flat" black works really well, especialy "under the lights".

No way. Pawprint all the way. I like the attack cat but it does look kind of generic IMO. I've always felt that the simpler a logo is, the cooler it looks (most of the time).

You're gonna have top help me out with the "generic" thing.  What other school has the word "Ohio" in their logo? The logo is a combination of two elements - the cat and Ohio. It is very distinctive...one of a kind.  The paw sucks - doesn't distinguish us in any way whatsoever.  And it harks back to an era of general malaise for Ohio Athletics in general.

I wouldn't say that the Paw Print era was that bad in all of Ohio Athletics (see below).  Everybody has different tastes, but I agree that the attack cat is a BIG improvement over the paw print.

Having been a student when the logos were changed the Attack Cat took a while to grow on me. I think its fine as a logo, my only criticism is that all of the MAC logos look like they were designed by the same ad agency.

I'll always have a soft spot for the Paw Print though. I like how its old school and relatively generic, there's something inherently OHIO about that. Nothing fancy, just a classic, old school, Americana image. It would be fun to have an alternative green helmet with a paw print like we had back in the Lichtenberg days.

Yes, because the attack cat is ALWAYS used along with the arched OHIO.

That may be true but I was linked to that product and others that feature the attack cat sans the arched OHIO through the fan shop via the official OU athletics site. If that's not our logo then they shouldn't allow it to be sold in their official team store.

as I understood it, the logo, when first introduced, could only be printed together. Then after a year or two, it became okay to print the arched OHIO and the Bobcat separately. Which works for me, as I like each item individually more than I do together.

In addition to the longest college stadium name; Carl Smith Center, Home of David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium, UVA has multiple logos still used by both the athletic department and University,

the logo at centerfield in Peden is the Attack Cat, sans Ohio. I'm guessing there's a flexibility in seperating the 2 parts as the Attack Cat becomes a more established symbol for Ohio athletics.

I actually like our helmet and the writer is not taking into consideration the objective of improving our "branding" with the Ohio / Ohio State confusion that really happens a great deal in other regions of the county.

I actually knew somone in Baltimore who went to the Ohio-Maryland game won by Ohio and thought he had bought tickets for O$U and was suprised when Kareem - Hookfin & Company came onto the field.

Wow, now that's just a bizarre ranking of helmets, but it does show that there is a wide disagreement. If you reversed the order, I'd have been closer to agreeing with it.

Maybe I've missed it but I haven't seen any other school on any level that uses the attack logo that Ohio uses. I tried to do a google search to find one and all of the bobat logos I found were quite different.

Now I'm not saying I dislike it, but the paw print, on the other hand, can be seen on college and high school helmets all over the place. Clemsen's logo is the most well known. But just in my area, the Kenton Wildcats, Ada Bulldogs, Seneca East Tigers, Gibsonburg Golden Bears, Ottawa Hills Green Bears and Galion Tigers all use paw print logos at least some of the time. There probably are many other schools in the area with animal names that do, but those are the ones I know for sure do. The pawprint, while its simplicity is cool, most certainly is generic.

And for what it's worth, you can still buy officially-licensed items with the pawprint logo, so  it's not completely phased out. Here's one example: https://cbsohiou.3dcartstores.com/Oxford-Rayon-Tee-Block-Ohio-over-Paw-14121_p_74-1956.html

Actually, maybe that paw print shirt is not officially licensed because, according to http://www.ohio.edu/brand/logos/index.cfm, Ohio University does not use the paw to represent the university or its athletic programs. It also says the attack cat represents only athletic teams, not the school academically.

It sounds like they really want to phase out the paw completely:
"While items displaying the Paw may be sold at retail locations in limited quantities for a limited time (such as merchandise from the University's Heritage Collection), the Paw is no longer an institutional mark and may not be used by University offices or organizations to represent Ohio University. Exceptions will not be granted."
