Trying to get my mind off Sears in portal, so any former O-Zoner's have some funny / cool stories they want to tell of their time in the O-Zone?

I have one -

This year we played Ball State I reintroduced the dirt sheets. Found girlfriend's name of one player and soon as he subbed out for someone on the court and got near the O-Zone, I and a few others yell "HOW'S *name* DOING?!" He gave us a look and proceeds to go 1-6 from the field and 0-4 from three that night. We also had a trash talk battle with Mo Njie.

Probably the single greatest OZone memory that gets referenced every once and a while on BA is the time during a winter 2011 or 2012 mid-week OOC home game where attendance was sparse, don't remember the team we were playing against but it was your standard fair basketball game except there was a group of about a dozen or so Brazilian visitors up in the stands chanting and singing pretty loud like it was a soccer or euro basketball game. I can't remember if it was foreign exchange group or a another kind of group that stopped by Athens for one reason or another.

They were eventually invited down to the student section and it was a pretty great time. It was unique seeing the cultural differences in cheering etiquette. I remember they had a hard time grasping that they had to be quiet while we were making free throws. I'm sure if you dig around the forums here you'll find threads discussing the whole event.

That's awesome!! I've watched some international soccer and have marveled at the chants the factions of fans come up with and how loud they are.

It was during the 11/12 season, second game of the season against Lamar. This game is #1 on my list of games that had absolutely no buzz going in that actually turned out to be really hype. People probably went into the Convo thinking it would be any other early season non-con game against an opponent no one really knows, but it was really a lot of fun. As mentioned, the Brazilian group was awesome, but the game was great too. Lamar was coached by Bob Knight's son, Pat and their roster was full of ath-a-letes. That game saw the best dunk I've ever seen from an Ohio opponent in person. Their little guard Mike James, who recently had a brief stay with the Brooklyn Nets, yammed an alley-oop over Ricardo.

It went to overtime, and we managed to pull it out. Probably one of Stevie Taylor's five best performances at Ohio and it was just his second game. Lamar turned out to be pretty good that year. They won the Southland tournament and lost in the play-in game against Vermont.

Man Shab coming in with the elephant like memory! That dunk though, my goodness. If only I could get to that point where I could dunk willingly on anyone… time to hit the gym.

My memory is encyclopedic when it comes to the games I attended, and not so bad for any game, road or home, during my time as a student.

The Grandma Hipsher incident was before my time, so I can't recount it, but hopefully someone else can.

Wish we could have a cheering section like those Brazilians every game.

I was not at this game. I watched it on TV in my dorm room while I finished some homework, but the 2006 home game against Akron, the referees had the PA get on the mic to tell the O Zone to stop chanting "Bullsh*t" or Ohio would receive a technical. So for the remainder of the game, whenever a slightly questionable call went against Ohio, the O Zone chanted "Bullpoop".

Ohio won by 3 after getting into a 14-0 hole to start the game.

Those are some soft officials and hilarious response!! We did a few "Bullsh*t" chants this year namely after the refs gave us a bench tech for no reason at all. I thought Boals was going to get ejected with how much he was losing his mind. I think it was against Mount St Mary's or St Francis. I remember Carter also received a tech for arguing another questionable call earlier.

Any funny stories regarding opposing coaches? I could imagine Dakich being super pissed at various referees at times. Similar to the tantrum Tod Kowalczyk had here this year. Thought he was going to get a tech with how much steam was coming out of his ears.

One year after a Miami game, some of us were just milling about on the floor, shooting the shit, and Miami assistant coach Jermaine Henderson came out of the locker room and asked if he could see one of the dirt sheets. He chuckled and told us "These are great, I gotta take this and show the guys."

I was in the O-Zone for that game. We were really amped up because Akron featured LeBron's former teammates in high school Romeo Travis and Dru Joyce III. They were pretty piped up in the preseason for the talent they had returning, but we were just coming off the 2005 tournament run and this was before the whole Fears drama so the entire squad was intact.

For a Tuesday night, it was a pretty big deal. Immediately after the PA told us we'd get a technical, the O-Zone went absolutely berserk the next Akron offensive possession. And Romeo Travis had a huge dunk to shut us all up, hahahaha.

Anytime we played Buffalo at home from 2004-2007 was always a great time. I don't think they beat us on our floor that entire time. Anyway, one of Buffalo's best players during that time was their 6'10" center Yassin Idbihi. The guy was huge and had a ridiculously long frame.

Any time he touched the ball in the paint, a few of the O-Zone members would scream out "IDIBIDIBIDIBIDIBIDIBI" and we all just laughed.

I don't know about 04, but we did not lose at home to Buffalo the rest of those years. Great moment from that stretch was a raw freshman KVK blocking an Idbihi dunk.

The late Charlie Coles (Former Miami coach), LOVED the O Zone and would always play back and forth with us during the game. It was such a fun, but intense rivalry and Charlie got it. He was one of the best.

Watch the whole video but at the 30 second mark is the part germane to this thread.
