It all depends on which BG team shows up. The one that beat Minnesota and UB, or the one that showed up last night. And, if you look at their schedule they seem to play slightly better on the road. Not, predicting a BG win, just saying the wacky world of MACtion, it's possible.

Agreed. I pegged BG for 3 wins this year. Murray State, Akron and NIU. I didn't expect Minnesota or Buffalo being 2 of them. But I'll say this much, if BG somehow does win one of its last 2 games this year, it will not be vs Ohio. It will be Miami. That much I'm sure of.

I have been reading above about the triple 5-3 result, the tiebreak like 2005, not sure how that would fall our way however. The "simplest" way to win the East is to somehow not have Kent get to 5 MAC wins...

I don't think that any triple 5-3 result can possibly work in OUr favor now since Kent St. lost last night. If Kent St. was going to go 1-2 down the stretch then the win had to be over CMU. If Kent St. wins another game then they will have 4 MAC East wins which would guarantee that Ohio cannot win a three way tiebreak. Ohio can only get to 3 MAC East wins (Akron, Miami, BGSU).

Kent losing its last three was always part of the most likely of all of the improbable scenarios before last night. Now it is 100% required along with a Miami loss to Bowling Green and two Ohio wins. The good new is in that scenario if all of that happens Ohio wins. You don't need to worry about what Buffalo does or how any or the MAC West games go as you did in the scenarios where Kent St. won last night.

I said that reasonable odds were 500:1 yesterday. After the games last night went the right way, I think that it is more like 300:1 to 350:1 now. I would still not get your hopes too high.

That is right, we need Akron and BGSU to beat teams that they consider rivals. If it were not for that fact, I would say that the odds are much longer, but we might just get a break there. Now, we still need to beat Toledo (I am from Toledo, so always fun to beat the damn Rockets) and BGSU--sweep my home area of NW Ohio--but I think we can do our end of the deal.

You still don't get it. It's not the positivity that I object to. It's the tone of many of your posts that go beyond "I think we might be able to pull this off," which would be reasonable positivity, to a kind of alternate reality of painting OHIO as some kind of world beater. I hope that you are correct and that we pull this cat out of the bag -- run the table the rest of the season, win the MACC and end the season 7-7 and keep our non-losing season record intact. Go OHIO!

Pataskala, not sure who you include in your "we" but if you don't think there has been negativity on here this football season I just don't know what to say. I could pull posts for you but it's not worth my time. And OCF, you object to OhioBobcat's "tone"? Really? HIS tone is the tone that bothers you? And your complaint that he implies we are a "world beater" when he's only crazily hoping we have a slim chance to get in the MAC race? World beater, where do you get that?

Look more closely at his posts over the last several weeks. He hasn't posted as "crazily hoping we have a slim chance." That's a completely inaccurate description of his "body of his work" here on the BA football forum since the beginning of this season. As I've said, he hasn't come off as just a crazy optimist, but as a would be Nostradamus. In the last few posts, I think he's been much more reasonable in his tone. I think that's great improvement. Again, I agree with him that we have a chance, and I'm rooting for that improbable chance to come to fruition. GO OHIO!

Y’gotta believe. Watch 4 Days in October. Kevin Millar is that guy…of course the Red Sox controlled their own destiny, but what the Sox did had never been done (come back from 0-3 in a 7 game series) in the history of baseball…and for a team that had not won since WWI…What do the British say? “It’s the hope that kills you” ? Not for me - bring me the hope!!! Preach on OhioBobcat!

This is why we play the games. Why everyone wants to make predictions and get upset when they don't pan out, I'll never understand. I try to watch a game as I would attending a play or a concert. There are many factors that add to my enjoyment, but I always enjoy the show.

Granted, there was a lot of negativity the first 2/3 of the season, but you have to admit that there was a lot to be negative about. A 1-7 start; the loss to Duquesne, especially after blowing a 13-0 lead; no offense vs Syracuse, Louisiana & NWern; blowing a 21-0 lead to Buffalo and giving them a second FG attempt at the end (and a third if they had needed it); coaches and a player who wasn't even in the game getting 15-yd penalties at crucial pts in the game; a general lack of direction on offense, a defense that had forgotten how to tackle, a kicking game that was inconsistent at best. This team, and especially the coaching, was just awful over the first eight games. They've improved over the last two games, and the tenor of the criticism on this board has reflected that. Note that the threads that have been highly critical of Tim Albin are now buried on page 2 and beyond of this board. But by the same token, claims that teams are afraid to play us just don't match the facts.

It's not negative to point out that Ohio's chances of winning the East, let alone the MACCG, are the slimmest of slim. It's just being realistic. Under the best circumstance, we have to win out, Kent has to lose to 1-5 Akron and MOFO, and MOFO has to lose to 1-5 BG. This ties us with MOFO and we have the tiebreaker. But if it becomes a three-way tie, because of the MAC's tiebreaking procedure we also have to rely on Buffalo losing to both NIU and BSU (possible) AND Akron winning at Toledo (not very likely). Given that, just to win the division Ohio has to rely on so many things to happen that are out of its control, the path to the MACCG is hardly clear.

Much of my belief and optimism simply stems from the fact that I feel the exact same way about this team now as I did in the preseason, after the Duquesne loss, or when it was 1-7, 1-3 a few weeks ago. Several weeks ago when many on here were calling this one of the worst seasons in Ohio history, for Albin to be fired, that Ohio's MACC hopes we over, etc., I was not one of them. It's because I saw a team that was trying get to its footing in the preseason and began turning the corner in the first half of the MAC season. The wins weren't there, but the fight and determination was clearly there, progress was being made, and this team never quit. The last few weeks, it has finally shown up and is now shining through.

Added to that, when Ohio started getting wins (vs Miami and EMU), it also started getting some much needed help in the standings. Miami lost to Ohio, Kent State lost to CMU, and Buffalo fell behind Ohio in the standings after losses to BG and Miami. It put Ohio squarely back in the MACC race. And despite a 1-3 start in the MAC, Ohio is now just 1 game behind both Miami (who Ohio owns the tie breaker over) and Kent State with two weeks to go. Is it exciting? Hell yes. And I surprised? Not at all. Did I expect it? Yes I did. And the fact of the matter is, no matter what anyone's opinion is on Ohio, the Bobcats are alive in the MACC race. Can Ohio win the MACC? Yes they can. Will Ohio win the MACC? That's to be seen.

Yes - NOW Ohio is eliminated. The better team won tonight but again, Ohio didn't quit and battled to the very end. At least Ohio can end the season with a win over BG next week and close the year out with 3 wins in 4 outings, which is saying a lot considering the start of the season.

My question is what happens if we lose to BG next week? We will finish 3-9, lose to the last place team in the MAC East (BG) who is currently (3-8/1-6),and end the season with one of the worst records in football in a LONG time. Heck, even if we win what does that mean? We will still have beaten the team who is currently in last place in the MAC East, which we should expect to win.

I fear this is the point where OU football slips into a decade (or more) of irrelevance. There are 30 roster spots about to open (RS Seniors, 5th Yr Gr and Seniors). Five underclassmen are already in the transfer portal and no recruiting class lined up. Throw in another 20+ RS Jrs who'll be gone after next year and this team is in a precarious state. To be honest, I wouldn't give Albin the time of day if he was recruiting my son.

A decade is a bit grim, but I agree we're in for at least a few years of pure misery. There's no money to buy out the contract, so Albin is back next year for sure. So another season and recruiting cycle of futility awaits. Based on other builds/rebuilds around the MAC, even a great coach will need a couple of seasons to dig out of the hole (Fleck went 1-11 in his first year at Western). But a decade is overly dramatic. A dynamic coach who taps the transfer portal and is savvy with JUCOs can bring this program back faster. There's a lot more potential here than, say EMU, which has clawed its way to respectability thanks to a good coach. Keep hope alive - just don't bother using any for the next few seasons.

At least we can say we beat two bowl-eligible teams, maybe helped save Dino Babers's job, propelled Duquesne to a winning season, and maybe wind up with a better record than NWern.

I don't agree about O.U. having no money to buy out Albin.

As I've posted, if the A.D. and Board of Trustees wanted, there are a number
of ways they could handle a buy out.

The damage that will be done to the program by having Albin back, including, as you say, "another season and recruiting cycle of futility" should provide more then enough incentive for O.U. to figure out a way to show him the door.

CAN it be done? Sure. I mean, Akron just did it and they make OU's finances look solid. It would not be prudent, politically tenable or a good use of funds. The department operates in the red already so how do you justify it? You think there's a huge difference in what the program generates in revenue at 3-8 versus 8-3? I doubt it. At least this year we don't have to spend money we don't have to travel to play a 6-5 Sun Belt team in the Weedeater.com Tidy Bowl presented by Family Dollar.

It would also require that the AD acknowledge her first major hire has been a disaster. That's not gonna happen.

I disagree.

In my opinion, buying out Albin would be both prudent and a good use of funds.

I really don't know what "politically tenable" means.

"O.U. Country" has a post on the "The Toledo Team . . ." thread.
His last two paragraphs pretty much sum up my feelings.

As far as generating revenue, I don't think any of O.U.'s sports programs comes close to operating "in the black".
From what I've read, that's pretty much the same for almost, if not all, G5 schools.

The issue is, how far O.U. wants the football program to "go down the rabbit hole".

Previous posts on this and other threads have shown just how much damage, in terms, of player retention and recruiting has been done to O.U. football, in less then 1 full season under Albin.

Does anyone think it won't get worse, if Albin stays ?

I don't know what O.U.'s annual operating budget is.
I'm sure each department has "contingencies", to handle unforeseen circumstances.
I know in my profession we figure a 15%-20% contingency for any construction project.
Use some of that money to buy out Albin.

I also know that here are a number of financing options available to colleges like O.U., including "leftover" funds from projects that were bonded.
Rutgers "loans" money between departments.

It is apparent that the future of O.U. football isn't with Albin.

Knowing that, the A.D. should be moving heaven and earth to, as I posted, "show him the door".

If she isn't, and has no problem with another year of mediocrity, perhaps she's not the right person for A.D.

Rest assured, that's not gonna happen.

Wow...Ohio has one subpar season in the last decade and change and now we're talking about 5-10 years of misery??? This is the same kind of laughable nonsense you see from Ohio State and Alabama fans after they lose a game. Come on people, this program is still in great shape. There's a ton of talent, a lot of great young players that hasn't seen much of the field yet, and much of the staff is still here. Sure this season had some hurdles, like an unexpected coaching move late in the game. But Ohio isn't going anywhere and it will be a contender again next season, and the one that, etc. Have some faith, all the success this program has had is worth at least that much from its fans after one subpar season.

Since firing Albin probably isn't in the cards for at least another year, the AD at least needs to shake up the thinking on defense and conditioning. Whether this means firing somebody or re-educating them, I don't know. But we can't have another season where our defense is a sieve and players on both sides of the ball our overwhelmed physically.

Our stats this morning have us:
107th in 1A (11th in the MAC) in total D
114th in 1A (11th in the MAC) in rushing D
77th in 1A (7th in the MAC) in passing D
122nd in 1A (last in the MAC) in takeaways
127th in 1A (11th in the MAC) in tackles for loss
113th in 1A (10th in the MAC) in sacks
101st in 1A (7th in the MAC) in points allowed
The saddest we've been defensively in quite a while.

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.

Tim was dealt a bad hand! Had no time to institute what he wants. This team was not great from the beginning. He deserves a chance, a real opportunity to have spring ball, full recruiting year and to make staff changes.
