Not very hard -they hired the San Jose St coach

Interesting. I heard that guy brought up last night, but the internet seemed split on his record. SJSU isn't an easy place to coach.

Surprised Candle hasn't been floated for more (any other?) roles? Even just as an offensive coordinator or something similar to Sean Lewis.

11 Warriors seems to think OC at OSU is possible - though no idea what that means with Hartline? Presuming he moves on? Fired already? https://www.elevenwarriors.com/skull-sessions/2024/01/144...

I continue to be amazed that Candle hasn’t gotten an upgraded job. There’s lots of coordinator jobs that pay way more than he’s making. Either he’s a terrible interviewee or he’s waiting for the “perfect” job someplace. He’s got a lot better resume than some of the guys you see getting jobs-including the San Jose guy.

Looking at his resume, it’s very limited- only at Mt union and now Toledo since 2009. He’s young 44- though so he’s got plenty of more years in him to land a better job. He's apparently making 1.250 mil a year so that’s pretty good for G5, certainly the MAC. Probably a little too provincial for most programs and no major conference experience of any kind as you say.

Candle has definitely earned that next job. I thought he should've been given the Cincinnati role, but it went to Satterfield... who isn't too impressive either. That was a stunner imo.

I've said it in a different thread, but he might be unwilling to take a "step down" to a coordinator role that a larger school is probably asking him to do...?

And most P5 AD's probably want to see what he can do somewhere other than Toledo, so he waits. Had a brief stop at Mount Union, but he's been at UT since 2009.

Brent Brennan doesn't seem all that impressive on paper. Could be a hell of an interview... but he has coached at Hawaii, Washington, San Jose State (twice), Oregon State, Arizona as a GA...

Some fair success, a few 7-win seasons, but no bowl wins. In 2020 they were ranked 24 briefly.

Would've went Candle 10 out of 10 times, BUT... there must be a there there.

I'm wondering if the shine on MAC coaches has worn off; Sean Lewis being the exception. Unless you're doing something incredible like PJ Fleck did at WMU and you've just been OK at your job - not grabbing a ton of headlines - I don't know how you move up to the big leagues without a stopover in the AAC first.

And just now, Linguist is leaving Buffalo to be an assistant at Alabama.

I was never that impressed with him. He took a program on the rise and did very little with it. It seemed that the Buffalo job was not going to get him a P5 HC gig. The Alabama job is probably a nice pay raise and comes at a good time to get out. Much different than the Candle situation.

Why do you say that? He did a lot with it. In fact, he totally turned the program around. They were 24-10 over Leipold's last three season, and Linguist has them at 3-9 now. Oh, wait...you you probably looking for POSITIVE impacts...

I was just listening to a podcast talking about this very thing last night. The trend of upward mobility for MAC, Sun Belt and C-USA coaches is changing. Assistant coaching roles at high profile (Big Two) jobs are more enticing than a head job elsewhere.

Between this, the transfer portal and NIL, the Group of Five is in serious trouble.

Not sure if anyone has posted this, but Bill O'Brien is the new OC at O$U. Probably most remembered by BAers as the Penn St HC who gave our guys an incentive to beat them in 2012 by saying that Ohio "can't tackle" on camera during an ESPN piece leading up to the game.

Yep.

I didn't even see the "Co-Coordinator" thing at first. Must be about the money. Like what they're doing with Brian Smith here as "Associate Head Coach" as an assistant. Kane Womack was their big get at defensive coordinator.

So even if you're "co coordinator" you're still the DB coach, reporting up into the DC. Feels like a slide down, rather at least being defensive or offensive coordinator being lateral or a step-up in a lot of cases.

But yeahhhhh... Alabama is gonna pad that resume better than winning 3 games at Buffalo.

Times, they are a changin.

Current rumor mill churning is that UCLA Head Coach Chip Kelly may leave to be the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. The carousel never stops!

I think there’s been a fair amount of discussion about Kelly’s future there, but the step down in salary would have to be huge.

Because he sees the beat down that is coming with their new conference.

When the NCAA drops in, they will find things, and it's not coincidence that Harbaugh bolted. He will wear his welcome out in San Diego in 5 years. To me the sad part is, their winning at any cost and the excuses that were made to justify their actions by the University and their jealous fan base, basically shows that as a society, as long as you win, character no longer holds much weight to many.

It's extremely funny to me that it's going to happen to the fanbase that claimed they could do no wrong and the only reason they kept losing was because the Alabamas, LSUs, Ohio States and everyone else were all cheating. And they're going to claim it was because of a cheeseburger when in reality it was way more than that. I think it's a little naive to think they weren't cheating from the beginning also, but they finally got caught just like USC did.

It's an interesting parallel too because you could probably claim Seattle would have ran Carroll out of town after 5 years too and he stuck around and damn near created a dynasty if not for one horrendous goal line play call.

Pete Carroll isn't an asshole in the organization. Jim Harbaugh is, that is what got him fired in San Francisco, He is a handful on the staff and management, he was a Michigan as well. He will do well with the football side of things with San Diego, especially since they have some talent. It's just going to be how long the ownership stomachs him.

Can't blame him no way BC will compete given the current state of college football especially at the P5 level. Go to NFL where there's a salary cap and everyone's playing by the same rules. No brainer decision imo.

I've always wondered how the NIL era is going to impact lower level power conference schools like BC and Wake, then on the basketball side places like Xavier, Seton Hall and DePaul. We've never been able to dig into their finances because of their private tax status, but now we really get to see how deep those pockets go when your name isn't Notre Dame, Duke or Baylor.

For 99%, NFL is the top of the mountain.

There are maybe 5-6 FBS jobs better than NFL DC.

Everyone but Kirby is leaving that role to go be the next man up in the NFL.

Now that NFL coaching salaries have caught up to the top of NCAA, the NFL jobs are far and away better.

Don't disagree, BLSS, but what are your reasons for thinking NFL coaching jobs are better than college jobs?
