I'm waiting for a transfer to occur at halftime of a game. What's to stop Team A with less points on the scoreboard but with a bigger bank account from making Team B's star of the first half a better monetary offer as the teams head to the locker room? Does it really matter that he's still enrolled at School B? He can finish the term there remotely, or withdraw from school. Hell, does it even matter that he's student? I know this sounds ridiculous, but it appears that this is the direction we are heading.

Zach Reiners, 6-4, 305, OL, will transfer from Centre College in Kentucky to Ohio. He’s played LT and C in his career. Mostly FCS (and one CUSA) offers in the portal. Seems like a great kid with great enthusiasm for the Bobcats.

There were basketball players who entered the portal within minutes of getting bounced from their conference tournaments.

FWIW, 247 sports seems to be up to date and has us at #108 ranking in the transfer portal wars. We shall see how that turns out.

This doesn't square very well with USAT ranking Ohio at #58 right now as a team going into the 2024 season.

It does when you consider that they ranked the 2018 class, several of which we are collectively sad about transferring, at #120. That class (incl. Allison, Keye Thompson, Bryce Houston, Danneker, Walton) only won 20 games the past two years. LOL.

That seems like sort of a random comparison, are you saying because of that ranking that 247 rankings
mean nothing? Rather a stretch.

But it squares quite well with ESPN SP+ ranking of 102

Which I suspect is going to end up being more accurate.

247 recruiting rankings mean nothing outside the power conferences. There is little meaningful correlation to 247 recruiting rankings and conference standings, and there will be less so with the transfer portal.

For instance, the top G5 teams last year were James Madison, Tulane and Liberty. All spent a portion of the season in the Top 25. Their 247 rankings in 2019 (when last year's starters were most likely recruited) were 147, 89 and 133.

Zero. Correlation.

What you say about the recruiting rankings for. G-5 schools is probably fairly close to reality. FWIW, 247 seems to be the only service that seems to care at all about G-5 schools and take a crack to me. It’s fairly well accepted that rating players below 4-5 stars is pretty tough and almost seems random.
However, you seem to be trying to correlate one years recruiting ranking with a schools poll ranking. With the comings and goings nowadays, I wouldn’t expect much correlation, and you’re assuming that 2019 is THE year that really counts - not sure about that either. As for transfers, if a player produced at their previous school that should bode well after they transfer, if they didn’t play ( like Sammy at OSU), it’s hard to tell anything about how they’re do at their next place. If 247 rankings are based on the former, they should have some validity, if they’re in the latter, who knows?

I see your point. I guess I was going under the assumption that most of a team’s starters would be in their fifth season. ..or sixth because of COVID. But you are correct, that is less and less of a reality.

Carson May, 6-5, 210, QB, from Wyoming is being wooed by the Cats. Like Gunnar Gundy, put up ridiculous numbers in Oklahoma High School ball. Hasn’t played yet in colllege (Iowa and Wyoming) and would have three years of eligibility.

Nice to see Ricky Hunt lobbying for him to be a Bobcat.

So we have our new QB- Nick Poulos from El Camino college. 6’5” 225 from Granite Bay CA 3.99 GPA in college

He previously tweeted that he had offers from Tennessee tech and Stephen S Austin

He played in 2 games in 2023-6TD-2INT

A community college backup. This seems more like depth. They must be comfortable with Wither and Winters. I assumed they would pickup a QB2 with a better resume. Let's hope he's a hidden gem.

Just FYI…
Poulos was All Conference as a freshman, 2nd Team preseason JC All-American going into his
Sophomore year, and was injured two weeks into the 2023 season. He was conference POTW before he was injured. Calling him a backup is a bit disingenuous.

Thank you. I looked him up shortly after colobobcat66 posted and wondered how he went from only playing 2 games in the California Community College Athletic Association to NCAA D1 FBS. I guessed that there had to be more to the story but didn't know exactly what.

Me either. His twitter account says he was all conference so I wondered if that was high school, anyway there always more to the story. He was also a multi sport player in hs- shooting guard.

I’m not that great at looking at the film clips and judging how a kid will do in college, and his film is pretty short, but he does look like a great athlete with a quick release and very accurate. And he has OU in his name. And he prob has three years of eligibility. Welcome, Mr. pOUlos!

When I used to closely follow recruiting, I always figured that the bulk of the contribution to team results came from Juniors, Seniors, and redshirt Seniors, with lesser contribution from Sophomores and Freshmen, so I used a weighted average of recruiting classes as an estimate of composite recruiting. It didn't change anything; there was still little correlation between recruiting and results.

Nevertheless, that may be changing. It used to be a running gag for me that the lowest ranked Ohio recruit would always be the one player sure to be a starter, and for many consecutive years it happened. In the last few years, 247Sports and Rivals seem to be putting more effort into G5 recruits, and it has been true that the players who ended up playing substantial minutes as Freshmen have, instead, been the highest rated players in the recruiting class. Last year, three of the top four recruits were Gorman, Hendricks, and Hunt. We'll have to see if that was a fluke, or the start of more accurate numbers in the future.

FWIW here are some of the lowest/not even ranked players from the past:
2012 - Blair Brown - UNR
2013 - Tarrell Basham - UNR
2014 - Papi White, Maleek Irons - 70
2015 - Jake Hale - 70
2016 - Dylan Connor - 73
2017 - Kai Caesar - 73
2018 - Tyler Walton - UNR

Pro QB size but a decent enough runner that he should fit with our offense.

He looks like a throwing QB who can run and Parker looks like a running QB who can throw.

It looks like areas of need have been met by the portal.

Really?

Actually the most important question is can we catch.

Albin said we will use some 2 back sets and with OUr offense we look to be a run first offense.
