if P5 schools supplement their roster with proven G5s, then that should open up better HS players to those same G5s. as someone mentioned, still only 85 schollies. Keep recruiting. that said, this sucks.

That site now shows him going to Vandy, unless i am reading it wrong

Correct. They try to predict where people are going based on visits and rumors, though Vandy is a new one. Very interesting. I mean, thats a TOUGH place to play, but get your MBA from Vandy son. I'd do that in a minute if I were him. But maybe not the best current place to play if it was my dream to play in the NFL/CFL.

If the new subdivision comes to pass, they can approve as many scholarships as they wish, so the 85 may not stay. Now it’s hard for me to see them wanting a whole lot more than 85, but who knows?

Moving on from the doomsday news...

Joey Labas into the portal.

The NIL value attached to his name on that chart is interesting. Says that he is in the Quarter-million dollar range. Hard for a newly married young man to turn that down, especially when that would put him as one of the top 10 highest paid CFL players.

https://www.sportingnews.com/ca/cfl/news/cfl-players-sala... .

People can think what they want about him moving, but it's hard not to look at it selfishly if you're saying you'd be okay with CFL (to make money...but less) but not the portal (to make money...through NIL).

What I don't get is the argument of sitting out the bowl game to prevent risk of injury, but he played in the Akron game, which meant nothing.

In response to the Akon game and this bowl game - First off, he wasn't in the portal yet (the window wasn't even open yet). Second, maybe he hadn't even made a decision yet on his future yet. Third, maybe he had made a decision and targeted the regular season finale as his last game (like most portal entrees do). No one really knows but him. But that said, and if his Ohio chapter is indeed closed, he can't risk what he's potentially in line to make (money) and achieve (playing at his next stop) by playing in a glorified scrimmage. It's an easy decision to make.

Further, teams that qualify for bowls also get additional practices (non-bowl teams do not get them), which is huge. These additional practices are vital to the underclassmen, many who have been behind the outgoing seniors and portal guys during much of the regular season. Coaches cannot squander these additional opportunities by giving them to guys who are walking out the door (portal entrees). This game will also serve as a platform to give the coaches a better idea of what needs they'll need to address seeing how the team performs minus the guys in the portal (most who have had prominent roles). You can't replicate that during the year when they played in all the games. This is an opportunity for the coaches to see first hand what they have in front of them, similarly to what they can do in the spring.

Per this thread:
https://csnbbs.com/thread-968322-post-18884615.html#pid18...

Current portal departures;
Akron 15
Ball St 9
BG 5 including #2 RB
Buffalo 8 including starting QB, leading WR
CMU 9 including starting QB
EMU 5 including starting QB
Kent 15 including starting QB, #3 and #5 receiver
Miami 4 including backup QB and their kicker
NIU 5 including leading receiver
Ohio 6 including starting QB, #1-2 receiver, #1-2 RB
Toledo 4 including starting QB,
WMU 16 including #2-3 QB

Note that I did not check detail on all the players, only the offensive skill positions. Thus, some of the teams may have lost starting linemen or starting defenders, and I would not have noted it above.

Ohio is one of the best in terms of quantity, but was heavily hit in terms of offensive skill position players.

The grass might not be greener, but the money certainly is. A lot of people wanted these kids to get paid. I don’t think they thought about how that was going to happen. Now the see it and don’t like how it works.

Yeah, maybe in the BIG 10 or ACC but not in the MAC. He's a great runner and would be a good enough passer to light up the MAC.

Also, wouldn't mind Casey Thompson. I guess I just like former Nebraska QBs lol.

I understand some players wanting to go into the portal to get into a better program, make more NIL money, etc.

What I don't understand is someone like Kyle McCord.

He's starting Q.B. for the number 7 ranked team.

I'm sure he's making good NIL money.

You're a lock to be a high draft pick.

Why did he enter the portal ?

His dad played for Rutgers.

There were rumors he may have entered the portal to play
for them.

That got shot down pretty quick.

According to WFAN, when asked about playing for Rutgers, his answer was
"why would I want to play for a lesser program ?"

So, what am I missing ?

I think we have a real shot at Joe Labas. Was a 4-star out of high school. From Cleveland. Was a back-up at Iowa, buried behind Cade McNamara. Has 1 career start - in a bowl game no less - last year in 2022.

Since winning a MACC is the only thing that matters, Ohio could go for a QB who has proven he can do so. There are two of those to choose from in the portal and if Lombardi somehow has an 8th year, maybe in time there will be three to choose from. ;)

What you are missing is that players can move for any reason, or no reason, and that we have no way to know the true reason. Maybe he doesn't like his coach, or doesn't like the system, or doesn't like the climate, or had a spat with a GF, or doesn't like some other player or players on team, or wants more NIL money, or maybe he had a breakfast that didn't agree with him, and he was in a grumpy mood one day.

I understand what you're saying.

In the case of McCord, I just don't see a practical benefit.

I would also think that, if he comes off as "disgruntled" ,it could affect where he gets drafted.

He knew Day was going to look for an upgrade if possible. So he didn't wait to see if it was possible and is going to go somewhere where they commit to him as he commits to them.

Interesting.

Was already in the portal once last season with Purdue.

One season here... on to the next.

He's giving up an opportunity to start here next season (maybe not?) to move down to the FCS or something? Sit another year to move back up to the Big 10?

Rumor is that Day had a meeting with Kyle and his parents. I guess Day didn’t commit to Kyle being QB1 for next season so he saw the writing on the wall.

HEY MAN, are you trying to diminish my OU degree? LOL

But yeah... if they're smart, I would. For sure. I hope my future son is the punter for Harvard. If Rourke left us because he wanted to go to Vandy and get his MBA or something? Awesome. I'll help you pack brother. BVP? Proud of that kid.

Sears. Also understood. You can't pass that up. Huge opportunity.

Tristan? I think he's a cautionary tale of the portal. A little adversity and GOOOONE.

But you would be stunned by the amount of people who swear they're going to the NFL. 9 times out of 10, guys leave because they're not getting enough tape. They're not apart of a high flying offense or a power defense and they're not getting the stats they can use to hopefully play at the next level.

I was never good enough to be Kurtis Rourke, but at the level I played at even kids in D3 were convinced if they got enough PT they could turn that into a P5 offer, which could eventually turn into the CFL or NFL.
