Some mid-game observations.
- The Oline looks so much smaller with Dennison out. But it also seems a little bit more effective in run blocking?
- Parker Navarro is a really slippery runner. Some more designed QB runs might open up the run game a bit.
- Solid special teams play. Especially from Coleman Owen (who is just great in general).
- DBs look better than from the non-conference slate. Tank Pearson had some good plays.

OK one more non-Ohio observation. Akron's offense may as well have not bothered taking the field after the scripted plays in the first couple of drives. Ben Finley is awful. Moorhead needs to get 'cruitin'.

Two bad offensive teams. Nice playcalling. I guess we forgot how to throw the ball.

I didn’t watch most of the first half, but man, our offense needs work. And Navarro needs to learn how to hold onto the ball.

It’s hard to underplay, but this is one of the worst teams in college football.

I’ll let you decide if it makes a difference or you can tell who I’m talking about.

I'll say this about our passing game -

Parker Navarro isn't great, but he seems like a gamer, and has shown some elusiveness in scrambling.

But where are our receivers?

This was a huge question mark coming into the season and it hasn't gotten any better.

Coleman Owen is amazing.
Mason Williams is a serviceable TE.
Who else do we have? Who else even catches anything??
It's THIN pickings.

Chase Hendricks is the only other player with double digit catches (11) through 5 games.

Hard to be an explosive offense with 1 productive receiver.

Oh, we do know how to throw the ball. The game is only explosive if you callExplosive plays. UTM is not explosive.

People who didn’t watch the game, who will predictively show up about 645: “wow what an impressive offensive performance.”

Hmm. Said absolutely noone.

Our defense has been stifling.
Special teams good on returns and coverage, god-awful on the FG attempt.
Offense has been meh. 21 pts against a bad Akron team.

Good enough to win but certainly not "impressive".

While we’re telling jokes, I just cannot believe Miami is who kept us from the MAC title last season.

They’re potentially worse than we are.

Huge positives:
Tyus got 30 carries. 15 were delayed handoffs into the pile, but 30 is 30.

Parker did some good stuff with his legs.

Owen. Same thing every week. Our new Wigs.

Per the radio announcers, Poulos was not available for this game. Winters would have played if there was a problem with Navarro.

They added a Freshman (Papas) and a JUCO (Poulos). They also added one from the portal, but he didn't stick around. The good QBs in the portal wanted their NIL money...

Navarro? What about Tyus. I love his running, but he has to hold onto the ball.

Just Punt On 1st Down: The Tim Albin Offense

I know you're joking, but yes, Ohio obviously did attempt to wear down the Akron defense, and succeeded. They were much more effective at running the ball at the end of the second quarter, then again after the middle of the 3rd quarter, which in turned opened up the passing lanes. I've seen games go that was so very often over the years. They may not be pretty, but a win is a win.

Indeed. The defense is starting to play better. They will have a bigger test soon...

Indeed. Your prediction almost came true, but UMass couldn't win Q4 or OT.

It took 5 games, but did our Offense finally start to click in the Second Half? Sure glad that our Defense looks good.

2 points in 3rd Qtr, I recall that the third quarter is part of the second half.

Play that could have changed the outcome of the game? Akron's illegal forward pass--very close at the 16-10 point in the game.

Wonder if Elton John will look at the Saturday Night Fighting video of the 110?

Great sidewalk crowds along the parade route even with potential rain.

The Akron player who received a personal foul after putting on good pressure on an incomplete pass for standing over OUr grounded QB would cause any coach to pull his hair out, I think it was number 19--benched.....

Akron offense is NOT good. But 0-11 on 3rd down and 0-1 on 4th down is still a good showing. Weaver makes a huge difference. Navarro missed some throws but hit enough in the second half. Hope Tyus is OK.

....

My observation over the years is that, when one team wears the other down, the stronger team starts to assert itself late in the second quarter. The weaker team gets some rest at the half, and holds it's own for about half the third quarter, then it's all the stronger team after that.

Did the Ohio offense start to click in the second half? Or was Akron just out of gas? Maybe a bit of both. Either way, a win is a win, and next up to play is CMU.

I enjoyed the post game interview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_EFuq56pUQ

You can see that the team is starting to develop an identity, and that identity is based around relentless defense, and that gives the offense confidence. A moment that stood out to me was at 4:23 where the players were asked about the fact that the defense held Akron to -23 yards rushing. The defensive guys weren't surprised, but Coleman and Parker both were stunned. They knew the defense played well, but that was even better than they realized.

I would say that this team is ahead of where I expected. Particularly they are ahead in terms of uniting into a team. You start with some returning players, add freshmen, Juco players, and players from the portal, and you never know what you will end up with. Ohio has ended up with a great group of players that has become a team. I'm looking forward to watching a team that fights hard every game.

For the second straight home win I came away largely disappointed in our performance.

We came out flat despite an excellent crowd/environment.

Tyus had some nice runs but spends a lot of time hesitating in the backfield before hitting the hole. I watched the game from Sook so I could see the holes develop. Two fumbles. Not the same runner we saw at Syracuse.

Shocked Ricky Hunt saw so little action.

Upset that Albin repeatedly punted on fourth and short in Akron territory.

Soft, soft coverage by our corners. We knew Akron's pass attack would focus on short sideline routes, yet played at least 5 yards off the receiver all day. Many opportunities to jump the route for a pick 6.

Way too many stupid penalties.

The game was a lot closer than the score indicates...and this is largely due to overly conservative play calling and lack of discipline.

Even disappointed in the Marching 110. Meh performance and becoming so predictable. Physique/conditioning of today's members vs. those of the 1970s/80s might limit the number and tempo of dance routines...I don't know.

We have a QB who couldn't get anything on his passes two weeks ago, then we heard he has an injury and didn't play the next week. The backup was unavailable this week. We don't know how much pain Navarro was in or even if he would have played if Poulas was available. We had a lot of complaints early in the season that we should be running right at the other team more. Now, there are complaints about failing at running up the middle and not throwing enough. Guys, there might have been a reason for that.

Albin was asked in the press conference why he didn't go for it on three fourth downs in Akron territory. His answer, "Because our defense was dominating. Next question."

My next question would be, isn't the dominance of your defense a reason to take risks to score points?
