Great shot by his teammate who made it, but BVP had his man sealed with about 3 seconds left. A simple lob pass over the top and he has the high percentage layup/dunk for the win.

I was thinking the same thing when I watched it.

Ripon advances to the Semis with a 15 point win over another Regional #1 seed, Martin Luther, 78-63. They play another #1 Regional seed, Xavier on Thursday at 3:15 in the Kohl Center. It will be streamed live.

Xavier defeated Ripon in the state Div. 3 semifinals this afternoon, 81-74. I watched the first half and the first part of the second half. Both teams were really good, but Xavier had more overall firepower and their team rebounding was exceptional.

Ben Vander Plas had 21 points and 9 rebounds in a losing effort. He played very well throughout the game. Don't worry about his athleticism. He's got the build, quickness and hops. Ripon used him today as kind of a point forward. He often was handling the ball up top and getting the offense going. As the game progressed, he moved inside more. Because Ripon was trailing late, he did put up some three pointers in a comeback effort that he didn't connect on. He made several great moves to the basket, including a baseline reverse layup. He had two thunderous dunks in the first half, including one where he stole a pass and got out in transition by himself. He also showed the ability to knock down medium range jumpers. He looked to get his teammates involved first.

Defensively, he showed effort and skill, but will need to ratchet up the intensity as a Div. I player. But you could say that about almost all HS players.

He looks to me like a player who is Div. I ready and will probably be in the rotation from day one.

To put this loss in perspective, Xavier finished their undefeated season by winning the state championship game 73-47.

Tyrese Haliburton was named the same in a different conference as well. We are working on a Wisconsin all-star team....

We are 1/5 of the way there. Or, in the case of Ohio all-state teams, we are 1/10 of the way there.

Thanks for the report. Imagining our size and versatility between Vander Plas, Gareri and Carter is exciting.

I think that one of either Ben or AJ will step up next year and play a vital role. I really hope both do but I can see, finally, having 4 nice bigs that can rebound in Carter, Taylor and AJ/Ben. AJ was a fiercer rebounder in high school but it sounds like Ben was more of a point-forward. How about a "big" lineup with 6-4 Butler at PG, 6-7 Block at the 2, Ben at the 3, JC at the 4 and DT at the 5? Or even Laster at 6-5 at the SG?

Simmons, Dartis, Block and Carter all seemed locked in for starting minutes.

Thinking about that 5th spot is interesting. Starting DT in the post along with Carter would give us a more traditional look 4/5 look. If you use AJ or Vander Plas in addition to Carter, that feels the closest to how I've imagined Saul's ideal style of play. Vander Plas at the 3 continues to blur the line between our wing and post players.

And of course you have Laster in the mix. In this scenario, he is the classic 6th man who would get big minutes and probably be on the floor a lot at the end of the game when it matters with his defensive presence.

My biggest concern here is that towards the end of games it might become "lets watch Simmons make a play" if the shots aren't falling for everyone else.

Bump.

Still laugh at the "not athletic" portion of this thread.

And eating big time crow about Saul's excellent classes. (bleh)

I'll take full retro credit for my glowing analysis of how he played in the state semifinals (see above). And how I said "don't worry about his athleticism". Ha 😛😏

You have to admit had things gone the way we all hoped, Ohio could have had a darn good lineup of:

1. Simmons
2. Dartis
3. Laster
4. BVP
5. Carter

Though I'm not sure BVP would have started as a frosh, that would have been the best 5 in 2017-18.

And that lineup could have won its fair share of games if they were to have been together for a whole season.

Ripon with two D1 players. Luke Loewe commits to William and Mary. He was featured in one of the videos of Ben.

His teammate carved out a pretty good career as well. Loewe made 2nd Team All-CAA at William & Mary as well as the All-Defensive team.

Amazing that we are about to head into 2022 and Jason Carter and BVP are still on the roster! (wait, did I just find the bright-side to all this COVID nonsense?!?)

Also amazing, BVP could be a Bobcat AGAIN in 2022-2023!
