Fighting for time but intriguing: Frazier, Estis, Olumide, Sheldon and Hadaway

If we get a 10 ppg, 5 apg point guard this team will be just fine.

Revisiting this...

Is Jaylin Hunter that PG?

It will be fun this year for Boals to have some different looks. With DW3 and Wiz inside together you can have Hadaway/Clayton at the 3 shooting from deep or you can take Wiz and DW3 out entirely and go with a lineup with Hunter, Baker, AJ Brown, Hadaway/Clayton and any one of Rod/Miles/EJ4/Adelodun and just pressure and run over guys. Should be fun.

Assuming everyone stays healthy, and stays for the whole season, I agree with this. Recent history suggests that's unlikely, but I hope that isn't the case.

Lots of talent depth on paper. Can't wait to see how this team comes together!

I have a feeling Hunter will be that point guard EASILY. And I typed that a while ago before DeVon Baker joined our team and Frazier was still here. With Baker we're getting a dude who averaged 6 ppg at Tulane but 15 ppg at UNC-Asheville for 3 years.

I'm hoping to poke my head inside The Convo on Saturday for the first time since February. Maybe we'll get to see a little workout/open gym action.

Please post a full report if you see any practice time Saturday.

It won't be much of a report -- it's not a day intent on watching hoops. It's a day intent on hitting the breweries and hiking/biking. I just figure if I'm there, as usual, I'm gonna see what's happening inside. 😉

This year will have bigs under the basket. That should reduce the easy baskets by the opposition that have haunted Ohio over the years. Should make rebounds and the transition game effective too!

Report:

I didn't get into The Convo. Instead, took in lunch from Jackie O's and tried 9 new beers, and introduced a fellow MAC alumnus to her first visit to Ohio's best brewery. Then we all rode the bike path to Eclipse, and later hit up West End Ciderhouse.

I know, mega thread drift, but you asked for a report FearLeon. 😉

Actually this is better than any analysis of Elmore James fadeaway baseline jumper.

9 beers...well done.

And I'm jealous of your day.

To be clear, it was a flight of 8, and one "full pull" beer.

And it was a great day had in Athens. Probably the first time I've done a summer day in A-town in 10-15 years.

I'm very excited and hopeful about this kid. Three years of eligibility left, Seems like he can play in the post very well and this guy can DUNK! Adds some depth to our forwards this coming year. Will be plenty of young talent in Athens next year.

Listed as a JR on the roster.

These new COVID rules, plus grad transfers, I don't have a clue who is eligible when anymore.

He can't play a Grad year here, right? Or take his "Covid Year" in 2024?

I've watched some of his old Youtube footage from like 2018 lately. Even back then he was a 6'11 wide body. And even back then, his footwork and low post moves are very very polished. He gets great position to receive the entry pass, he uses his mass to get a good spot in the middle of the lane, he has a threatening hook shot with either hand, and because of that, he can get defenders to bite on a hook fake and go up and under. But he's very much a center. I don't know that I see a BVP or Carter who can take someone off the dribble from the arc, so I don't know that there would be many packages where he and Wilson are on the floor together. It's a really good pickup nonetheless.

Did he regress? I've yet to see anything polished in his game. Who would've thought a 6'11 kid would dominate the low post in high school?

Lets see if Gabe gets a few minutes at Michigan against some bigs.

I'm sure there's a thread on Wiz elsewhere, but I came to the recruiting thread to see where else he had offers when he ultimately chose Louisville.

This is a perplexing case, because he was HEAVILY recruited according to Verbal Commits by P5 schools. What gives? I just assumed in the MAC he would at least be solid/decent.

Unlike most of you, I haven't given up on him. Though he often looks confused on the court, he's shown me some flashes of what he could be from time to time. Remember the game he almost had a double-double and I believe didn't miss a shot? He clearly is a project, but I'm not ready to give up on him quite yet.

I wouldn't say I've given up on him as much as I'd say I ask why he's getting minutes in crunch time when he's a defensive liability. The Kent game in particular didn't make sense to me. Dwight had one foul, and coach was subbing in Gabe inside the last 4 minutes several times. I don't profess to be a basketball genius, but I don't see Gabe, at this time, as a better defender than Dwight, and he's definitely not as good on the offensive end, or on the glass.

Agree, however I see Wilson has a tendency to get quite winded at times.

Exactly, I think he hasn't regained his conditioning since coming back from his injury. I think Gabe needs to spell him so that he can be more productive when he's on the court. Yes, we are not as good a team with Gabe in the game, but I think Gabe is trying to play a role and he's learning as he goes along. He does appear to be team player.

Wiznitzer came from a Louisville program that was an absolute train wreck, and he’s still young. Give Boals another year to work with him and he could be a very solid MAC big man.

Let's hope so. Maybe coach can find a Vic Alexander Big man camp during the offseason.

Bump . . . just to give the Wiznitzer fan club a place to assemble.

Update on the Whiz - I've seen some pictures of him on his IG recently, seems like he's bulked up a bit this offseason - hoping a full offseason of work and more familiarity with our scheme he can become a starter this season.
