Not a knock on CJ but in a game like this it really makes you appreciate Kurtis and how much he has improved. Game experience matters big time, especially for confidence.

So the fourth-longest conference championship drought in D1A continues. The top three: Indiana and Minnesota (tied for the B10 championship in 1967 and haven't won it since) and Iowa State (1912, the year the Titanic went down).

Anyway, congrats to the team. They had a better season than most of thought possible. Today they played a team that was better...today.

We will get by.

. Watched the game on TV. Then read most of the replies on the blog. Whoever thought we would score 38 points with a third string quarterback against the #1 defense should never predict a football game the rest of their lives. I thought we played hard. The defense hung in there and 17 points is not bad at all. Obviously, the offense was not what it would’ve been with Rourke behind the center. It’s tough to move the ball consistently when they have eight men in the box and you never throw the ball deep. Hoping Rourke is back for next year. Not looking forward to a bowl game on television because I think it will be more of the same.

Wellll, you have to admit that today appeared to show that CJ wasn't ready for the conference championship stage. He couldn't make the throws to keep drives going and the defense off the field. Still proud of the team, but I don't think he's the guy right now.

That's how I've felt all along. The team did well from individual effort and maturation through the season, not because of Albin, rather in spite of him. How creative running up the middle on second, third, and fourth and long... almost every time.

Exactly my point. Watching CJ I just never had the confidence he would make the right read / throw and it clearly showed.

Gotta disagree. Most of the problem was that there was no confidence in our ability to stretch the defense through the air. Harris just wasn't able to get it done against a better defense. Ball thrown to the wrong side of the receiver in double coverage led to the critical INT. Ball underthrown to Jones for a probable TD. Two plays leading to a point swing and points left on the field right there. Coaches really didn't have much of a choice. Compounding the problem were some bad choices on the read option. UT was collapsing on Bangura big time, QB run was wide open a couple of times, but not taken.

Not putting the loss on Harris, it just showed that he was the 3rd QB on the depth chart at the beginning of the season in his 2nd start against the best defense we faced in conference play.

He may not be Kurtis but was 17-31 with 2 drops of perfect throws on our last possession. 19 - 31 would have been 60+%. This against the #1 defense in the MAC. I guess I'm in the minority who saw a guy with zero game experience come in and do pretty damn well in 2 1/2 games when called on with no advance notice due to Kurtis' injury.

Did you watch a different game than I did? Are you aware we passed the ball more than we ran it?

You seem to be an Albin hater, unlike the guys on the team.

Albin couldn’t heal Rourke miraculously and he couldn’t makeHarris into Rourke in 2 weeks time. That’s not on Albin that’s just football, injuries are a bitch. Agree with an earlier poster that it appeared Harris could have made a few different option run reads that MAY have loosened the Toledo defense a bit. I had no problem with the pass attempt that got intercepted, it was a bad throw unfortunately. This loss is NOT on Albin. Turn the tables and give us a healthy Rourke and the Rockets stuck with going with Gleason due to Finn being out and the board would be giddy with an Albin victory over the Rockets today. Our undermanned defense performed admirably in spite of losing 2 key cogs in game. Our offense with a 3rd string QB was limited against a very stout MAC leading defense. Congrats to Coach Albin, his players and staff for a fantastic effort today and a great MAC season!!!

I don't know who was the intended recipient of the fair weather fan comment but I've been there all season. In all the weather. I know losing Rourke was a killer, but 7 points? The fact remains we've never shown a championship level offense in Detroit in five title games and a bowl. Offensively we are supremely lousy in this building. Toledo gave up a shit ton of points this season. I really don't care about their yardage average. How did bg ring them up for 42. Buffalo in the 30s. We were out game planned today.

I can say that and still be proud of this team, excited about next year, and willing to eat crow because Tim Albin proved a lot this year. Go win a bowl game and come back strong next year.

But 7 points. God damnit.

The difference is we did not throw/complete many/any long balls. We game planned to run the ball and throw high per centage short passes. I don’t think that game plan was a recipe to win this game but maybe it was all they were comfortable doing with CJ

That was a toughie, no way to sugar coat it. From the opening kick, Toldeo was the better team. They moved the ball on their first drive. The almost fumble was stunning to me - on the replay board it clearly looked like a fumble. I will have to seek out another replay. Then Stuart runs 29 yards easily for a TD. That was a tone setter, we seemed deflated after that. A quick 3 and out compounded that feeling.

We forced a couple punts, then scored a TD to tie it up - felt like anyone's game at that point. The INT at the end of the half hurt - that was on a 1st and 10 play for us.

Holding them to a FG to close out half - we had the chance to get the ball and take the lead in the 2nd half. Of course, we never scored again. Our defense made several stops but we were completely inept on offense and Toledo's D sucked the life out of us. The conservative playcalling left much to be desired. Bangura up the middle how many times? The 55 yd FG attempt was also a bit perplexing... though I don't think we would have converted 4th and 11.

The loss stings. Not having Rourke hurt. No excuses, though - I felt like even with CJ we could have won.

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

Toledo was the better team yesterday. Their game plan worked. Stop the run and force CJ into passing. UT got the INT they needed. It cut our best chance at a go-ahead drive. Harris is good, but you can’t expect him to read the coverages as fast as Rourke. Plus, KR’s accuracy is one of his super-strengths. To beat a fully staffed Toledo team was too steep a climb without the MAC Player of the year. Positives? Our D held UT to 17 points. I was impressed with that. I’m looking forward to next season and beyond. I will always be proud of this team.

Can’t be too mad about this one. CJ will never be Kurtis. Can’t expect the offense to be good when our 3rd string QB is playing. As we have said a lot of times, “there’s always next year.” I hope Keye will be healthy soon but he was in obvious pain. I expect most of our starters to come back on both sides of the ball. Of course you will have the super seniors gone but I’m actually pretty excited for next years team. Gonna have to chalk this one up as another what could’ve been season.

CJ lead us past BG and put us in a position to go to the Mac Championship game. I thought he showed a lot of courage and played well.
I think he is a important part of the team going forward and we are a better program with individuals with character like him.

I wouldn't be surprised to see CJ in the portal. He's never going to be higher than our third-string QB. Too limited -- not sure where his strengths lie. Not a great passer, not much of a running threat.

He was the back up QB, he did the best he could do. Not like there were other options. He gave his all, that is all you can ask.

Toledo coaching staff deserves a lot of credit. Had the guys respond too and play a physical game.

Anyone watch on TV and could see that the correct call was? On the big screen it looked like an obvious fumble as the runner rolled over the defender and therefore never touched. What actually happened?
