Quick reminder/public service announcement. The PawPaw Festival is this weekend also. If you're coming to town from the south and west via 50, be aware of the increased traffic at Lake Snowden.

Interesting...

Broney's website says they open at 11. I wonder if they rented out the entire bar? $22 tickets must buy something.

$22 tickets are for the game. The alumni huddle is free.

Well, one good thing, they are at least respecting our name. In looking at their boards -- mainly CycloneFanatic -- I didn't see one reference to "Ohio U." I don't think I even saw an "O.U." Virtually all references I saw were to simply, "Ohio." So they may think beating us by less than 20 points is a fireable offense for their coach, but at least they actually know who they are playing!

A sellout? Don't count on it.

You have to go back to 2014, when we were still in the afterglow of the Penn State victory and the Sports Illustrated feature story, to find the last one of those. (Though we came close when we hosted Syracuse in the 2021 opener, coming off the COVID season.)

This year's home opener crowd was pretty weak. If we got 20,000 (capacity is 24,000+), I'd be a little surprised.

(Of course, it might get announced as 20,000 when there are really 15,000 butts in seats.)

Gotta admit that's pretty pathetic if we can't get a sell out for a decent Power 5 school that was recently a Big XII runner up.

Definitely appreciate this.

Depending on how long their fans have been around, this is the next game in a long line of matches going back to at least 2000 that I am familiar with so the name is one they've seen.

Being Iowa State they probably hate ever being referred to as "Iowa" so they want to show the same respect to us not being Ohio State.

Shoutout to Matt Campbell for that glowing review of Ohio football.

On OU: "First of all, you're talking about one of the premier teams in the mid american conference... someone who knows how to play championship football... great competitor for us."

On Rourke: "One of the best QB's we've seen in a long time..."

On Albin: "As well coached of a football team that I've seen coming out of the conference...tough, knows how to win.."

On Peden: "It's a tough, great place to play college football... one of the great MAC environments..."

For some reason, isu coaches and players think this is our homecoming game. anyone know where they got that?

“Ohio’s going to come out swinging,” redshirt sophomore Jacob Ellis said. “They played us really good last year. They have a lot of guys coming back. These types of games are something like what they call, ‘trap games.’ They’re making us their homecoming game, so it’s important that we come out of the gate fast and play hard all four quarters.”

Concur.

Are you referring to the Toyota Corolla powerful 3-cylinder or the Cadillac V-16?

My guess: Some position coach made it up on the spot for motivation and the players believed him.

I saw Matt Campbell answer a question about how he feels about HIS homecoming. So it might be something a game of telephone created. Handful of Ohio-born kids on the roster as well. Starting OT is from Newark.

ISU's football preview has this headline:
A HOMECOMING
Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell grew up about 155 miles northeast of Athens in Massillon, Ohio ... he is one of six Ohio natives on the ISU football coaching staff

Think people are just doing speed reading.

The last time...that Iowa State visited Athens was, as I recall, Knorr's first home game as head coach.

25,000 attended. Special commemorative medallions were handed to Tower Club members - and others?

The game stands as one of the most poorly managed games I've seen. Ohio opened with Dontrell Jackson operating the triple option and Ohio moving out smartly to a 14-0 lead. Then, inexplicably, Ohio switched to a pro-style offense (clearly not a strength of Dontrell). Ohio's offense ground to a halt and ISU put up 28 straight points. Then in the 4th qtr, with Ohio down 31-14, Knorr - or his ill-suited offensive coordinator - switched back to the triple option. Quickly it pushed the "go button" and the deficit shrank to 3 points. Now, if I am recalling correctly - and perhaps not - with the score at 31-28, Ohio got to within long field goal distance. A kick was tried and fell short.

My overriding thought during and after that game: Was Knorr mature enough to effectively manage his staff?

I think you are shrinking the first two years of Knorr's tenure into one game. We were still pretty much a speed option team then, with more passing mixed in versus say the Kareem years. It was the first year of the expanded Peden with a sellout of 24k. That 2001 team lost four very close games to start the year, then fell apart either mentally or physically or both. (lots of injuries if I recall, esp Chad Brinker having to get a brain cyst removed.) I think Knorr tried to make Dontrell a passer his second year, a short-lived and failed experiment culminating in the 31-0 loss to Northeastern in week 2, Then re-implemented triple option football the remainder of 2002 (which eventually led to a fairly strong finish). Our late touchdowns vs isu were a halfback pass for a TD and a long Brinker run that setup a 1st and goal. Not sure if Knorr would have eventually matured into a good head coach, but he was a first year coach with an entirely new staff and huge expectations. We know the disaster that ensued. There were flashes of good play in 2002 and 2004, but we didn't have the time to be more patient with him as the program seemed to have lost all momentum from the Grobe years.

Hindsight is 20/20 and you had to wonder if DeRuyter or Calhoun were the choice when Grobe left, what might have followed.

I've often wondered how Knorr would have faired had that close loss been a close win in Knorr's first home game as a head coach against a B12 team. You never know, but it would have set an completely different tone in the locker room and the mental state of the team would have been different. Emotions always play a big part in football I believe, and it seems this game started a downward spiral, with just an occasional uptick like the "miracle" win against Kentucky.

At the end of the day its Knorr. Hard to see it mattering too much.

How about if he, as a new head coach with continuity to the prior staff, had just allowed a 7-4 team from the prior season with the most returning starters in FBS to just keep running the same schemes that they did the year before rather than doing things like turning a fourth-year senior starting quarterback into a wide receiver?

Also, BigGameBoomer (our guy) picked an OHIO upset - and predictably - ISU fans are UPSET.
