As a referee, I was very amused at the reaction to Brown's over and back violation late. You could see Boals yelling "THAT'S BULL!", but it was correctly called. That's the kind of reaction where I'm saying in my head "It's the right call - read the damn rule book."

Don't worry, OVC refs give Belmont the benefit of every call at home.

Man why do you hate Belmont so much?

On a related note, many kudos to Belmont for being willing to come to Athens. Was a great matchup.

Agree on both counts. Not sure if Belmont peed in his cheerios or what, but that's a really good mid-major program. Would love to see them on the schedule going forward.

I'd return the favor and go visit them in their place next year. Anyone know if this was a 1 and 1 deal?

Boals has confirmed it is a home and home deal.

Can you explain? Seemed he had one foot in each half, how does the rule apply?
Thanks.

I am happy to be back in my self-appointed role as President of the Jason Carter fan club. Was so nice to have him back and see all the things that I loved in his first go-around with us...namely his defense and overall positioning and feel. But obviously the discussion from last night was his scoring and shot making. Fun fact...he never scored over 20 points in his 2 years at Xavier. His role was definitely more narrow at Xavier (defense/rebounding) and I think he is happy to be counted on for more again.

Interesting comments by Boals in his post game presser. He said at Xavier that Jason was told that if he missed his 1st three he wasn't allowed to take any more that game. He said it took him a while to get him off that mindset. Also, he said when Jason wanted to come back Boals first went to Jason Preston and BVP and asked if they wanted him back and they both gave resounding thumbs up. They said he was a perfect culture fit.

An over and back violation occurs when there is 1) team control in the front court 2) the ball goes into the back court after it was last touched by the offensive team in its front court and 3) that same team is the first to touch the ball in the back court.

There's a saying in some basketball situations that "you are where you came from". Mark passes the ball from the back court to Miles who, while the ball is airborne, has two feet in the front court. Miles jumps to catch the pass. When he catches it, the ball has front court status because Miles came from the front court. When he lands, the ball has back court status because Miles is in contact with the ball while in the back court. Violation. If Miles had just one foot in contact with the division line when he jumped, it would not have been a violation because Miles would have had back court status when he contacted the ball. The division line is considered part of the back court just like the sideline or endline is considered out of bounds.

Thanks, great explanation.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I was thinking something similar while watching last night's game as Jason continued shooting behind the arc despite missing his first few attempts. I was thinking that he must have the green light regardless of previous misses.

Here’s the link to the Belmont radio broadcast. Belmont broadcaster sounded pretty bummed out late in the 2nd half

Other than having gotten free studio time there in the 1980's (which I was thankful for), I have no reason to pull for Belmont.

I'm not an alum, I don't know any Belmont alums anymore, I have no reason to pull for them. And their little spoiled preppy students certainly were annoying at the Bracket Buster game that time.

Did you know their admission rate is 84% - for a private school?? Do you know will happen if a top professor of the Jewish faith applies to teach at their new law school? I could keep going, but the list of reasons to not pull for Belmont is plenty long.

One of a hundred links I could post....

----------------------------------------------

Prediction: if the game was close and that over-&-back call had cost us the game, there wouldn't be so much kissy-face & huggy-bear Belmont love on here today. Their popularity would be on par with Fiami and tOSU.

It was home against Bowling Green. As I remember it, the game was close at that moment and then the call awarded BG a ton of tech free throws and that was the ball game.

That was it. Happened with just under 4 minutes to play.

Good call fellas. Eagles, Falcons, some stupid bird mascot.
