If anything, even if his shot isn't going down, AJB can still drive and create contact and get to the line. When has BRod ever done that? The loyalty that Boals is showing to #3 is just stupid at this point. Surely Boals is aware of Brod stats over the last 49 games?? It doesn't take Dr. Naismith to realize he's completely lost his game from his first two years. Coaching malpractice from Boals on this topic. I can't justify what he's doing here with #3.

Same opinion. BRod may be the best kid in the world but his regression from when he got here is staggering.

14 turnovers, too many at inopportune times. Buffalo got 73 shots off and were going fast. It looked like we felt like we had to keep up and that's where we lost identity on offense and got stuck on numbers.

I still like seeing Boals go 10 deep. Elmore James was efficient off the bench. Miles Brown was fantastic. AJ Brown had a tough first night in the MAC.

We need to establish a guard who is an alpha on Offense. Perhaps Miles Brown can be that guy.

I think Miles is already the alpha guard. We just don’t have an alpha facilitator. Miles is a scorer and I think he’s proven that he should be looking for the shot first.

Laughed with this. I’ll never fathom Buffalo taking the wind out its own sails by choosing Whitesell and letting Bryan Hodgson; a young and upcoming assistant responsible for Williams/Segu signings, leave with Oats.

Kinda like Ohio University allowing Groce to leave with Dustin Ford or JC to leave with Anthony Stewart? Dustin would have been a great replacement for Groce to keep continuity. I shudder at the thought that if Boals leaves Cromer would allow Lamar Thornton to go with him without offering him a ton of money to stay.

Exactly like Dustin Ford. I was on campus from 08-12; players vouched for Ford too. Never understood why Schaus opted not to stick with continuity and culture (while keeping one of our own). JC at least had success in the MAC, Whitesell hadn’t been a HC in nearly a decade when Buffalo gave him the reigns.

Agreed on Thornton.

#1. for better or worse, Schaus was not going to hire anyone who didn't already have head coaching experience. He wasn't secretive about that policy.
#2. I think Schaus shied away from hiring alums because you don't want to be the guy who fires the hometown hero.

Those two factors are why Boals was ultimately hired when he was. Schaus was out the door so if Boals fell on his face, it wasn't his problem.

We lost a close road game in the MAC. Calm down people.

This was a very frustrating game. Not a particularly good game all around...the pace was fast and the bricks were aplenty. 98 rebounds in the game. We were too flat footed with careless overly fancy passing on offense and did a poor job of boxing out and grabbing the damn ball on defense. Coach Boals is no doubt really on the guys with this performance.

But we also had a lot of unlucky bounces...the rim was feeding the ball right to UB all night. I do not think rebounding will be an issue in the MAC, in fact I think it can be a strength. Not all luck though, there was definitely several that we let a UB guy come out of nowhere to grab a rebound he had no business getting. That'll be a point of emphasis this week.

Wiz getting 16 minutes (maybe more if he didn't foul out?) and DW only 24 (with just 1 foul) is definitely odd. Would love it if someone ask coach if DW is 100%. I understand he is a big guy coming off a medical redshirt year and load management and all that but only 24 mins in a close conference game where we desperately need him and the opponent has little answer for?

Only 2 players over 24 mins and 1 over 28 in a close conference game is pretty crazy...don't think I've ever seen anything like it. Boals, for the time being, seems committed to the deep 10 man rotation and limited minutes all around. Some nights it will be great others not so much.

Jaylin had an awful time distributing the ball tonight (and as an extension DW/Wiz were limited) and AJ couldn't create open looks like he usually can. We didn't shoot well across the board yet had a shot to tie it at the end. I'm disappointed but I can't be sky is falling upset over it. BG won't be easy and we may indeed have a poor record after 5 games but I still think this is a contending team and the MAC will be madness this year.

The way I saw this game it hinged on 2 factors;
1) Buffalo denied Wilson the ball
2) Buffalo was quicker to lose balls

We had the game in site down 2 with seconds left but could not finish.

With each passing game it's obvious that Jaylin isn't a pure PG. He's not a "distribution first" think guy at the point. Too many step back 22 footers with a man in his face. Down 2 with the ball with 1:27 left and that horrible pass off the break to Baker was the ultimate killer. You can't do that.

I wouldn't go that far. We've been insanely spoiled at the PG position, and Hunter is no Cooper/Simmons/Preston/Sears. But he does have good ball handling skills in general and can make some nice passes. Also some dumb ones. He's a decent mid-major point guard which is fine if you have upper tier shooting guards like the Brown Bros and a post presence like Wilson.

I think he can be decent for the reasons you listed. However, he hasn’t been consistently decent despite having the Brown Bros and Wilson to distribute to. He makes his job harder on himself because of his decision making and at times what appears to not wanting being a facilitator.

Sure seems like it. Resting him for more minutes than we needed too is one of the reasons Ohio lost.

How do you know what we needed to do? You know all about DWIII's physical status? Want to give us a medical update on Hamlin while you have your doctor's coat on?

Or defenses are keying on him because Ohio doesn't have an NBA caliber PG or BVP/Jason Carter to focus on anymore.

I truly think it's because he doesn't trust anyone else on the team.

Can you blame him?

Apparently he didn't trust anyone on the team last year as well. Bad take.

While I'm pretty frustrated we couldn't beat a 6-7 Buffalo team, it's not all doom and gloom. I'm just hoping when I attend the Kent game with my sisters (One a current Kent student) that we don't get pancaked like we did at the MACC last year . MAC will be a madhouse this year with Toledo losing to Balls and Kent barely beating Western Mich really sets the tone with how the conference will be this year. Ball State especially shouldn't be underestimated this year and will be tough to beat this year. Might be changing my plans to come to that game!

Umm...with Gabe on the floor his +/- number was -23. Buffalo outscored Ohio by 23 points with Gabe on the floor. So yes, when you ask what we needed to do....we didn't need 16 minutes of Gabe on the floor. We needed more minutes out of Dwight who wasn't in foul trouble. Numbers don't lie.

Someone’s gotta teach this kid how to rebound and/or set a pick and roll. That should be his entire role.

Gabe has slow foot work which means he should always play closer to the hoop where he doesn't need to move much.

This team has been inconsistent and looking more like a middle seed .500 type team. This team looks like a 5 or 6 seed this year. Very much like O'Shea type teams missing a piece or two. Boals is good coach and using this year to develop this team. Next year this team should be a top contender with the experience and returning players. Freshmen class getting some playing time.

The only issue with this model is two words: transfer portal. It's becoming harder and harder, especially for mid major teams, to develop young guys they have recruited and build towards the next season. I agree, it'd be great to see all of these young guys come back and continue in the program, develop, and win here. The reality is, we'll likely lose several pieces to the portal in April. It's becoming more like every year we're going to lose guys, bring in new guys, and hope they gel as a "new" group. The days of having several upper classmen on the team that have spent 3-4 years in Athens, to me, are largely going away.

At the beginning of the broadcast, the announcers said Ohio was one of the top rebounding teams in the country. I checked into it and we are indeed #30 in the nation. Seems like we probably have had some bounces go our way that have counted as rebounds because it doesn't seem like we are truly a "good" rebounding team and we certainly aren't blessed with height.

Not a whole lot to say about this game, tough road game to open up conference play. I've said all year that we will struggle in the post. When Wilson is on and is getting touches, he scores more times than not. After that, we have no options down low. We don't have shooters to compliment either so the double teams will continue.

Seems that Wiz is what we thought he was and those signs of improvement were probably overblown. Still a lot of season left but I can't trust him with the ball. When he is on the floor its essentially 5 defending 4.

I agree with another poster, we miss Sam Towns. I think he starts on this team this year and could've been a key contributor.
