The new US News and World Report rankings of colleges came out today and OHIO is #178 in national universities and is #96 in public universities (tied). This has us ahead of a number of SEC schools. Crazy to see the difference in gender breakdown. I remember this being something discussed when I was a student (20 years ago...) but this lists the undergraduate enrollment at 61% female, 39% male.

This is huge, generally unaddressed problem.

Big adjustments this year but yes Miami has dropped much closer to Ohio in the rankings (as I have hypothesized). Notbable names at the next rankings dow.

133. Miami
142. Cincinnati
151. Kansas
159. Kentucky
163. Ole Miss
170. Alabama
178. Ohio

All of these numbers represent multiple schools tied so its fairly easy to move up and down in this range. Miami's 45 spot lead on OU is really only 6 spots when you consider all the ties. Only a one spot lead on UC.

Between 1990 and 2005 I guest lectured often at Ohio. On one occasion the late Mel Helitzer (at whose home I stayed so often I dubbed it The Helitzer Hilton) asked to me speak with an upper level class. It numbered 22 students - 20 women and 2 men.

I told those men that they likely would find it easy to find employment as employers were looking for balanced workforces. To illustrate that point, I related a comment that the late Harold Burson, co-founder of the global consultancy Burson Marsteller, said to a gathering of the 500 or so headquarters employees. To wit, he said that he was concerned that his company's employees were becoming "too female." He related that he had heard from clients - our company was one - that they wanted a more balanced representation of Burson-Marsteller consultants.

Marketing, communications,human relations have become increasingly female dominated. And small wonder. At most global industrial/technology companies like the ones where I worked - General Electric, TRW, Timken - engineers were abundant. Too few women were majoring in engineering. (Has that changed?) But in fields such as marketing, communications and human relations, women found that they could compete, did so and flocked to those majors while in college.

Applicant GPA data in the USNWR for the in-state universities is interesting. OSU is a N/A.

Miami 3.9
Ohio 3.8
Cincinnati 3.7
Kent St 3.7
Bowling Green 3.6
Akron 3.5
Toledo 3.5
Cleveland St 3.3
Wright St 3.3

Miami is still strong but only 49% of their students are in-state compared to 83% at Ohio.

20 years ago means I would have been at OU, at least in part, during the same years you were.

Even back then the girl/guy ratio was around 3-1, which seems to not have moved much since then.
