I can't use this site at work because of it. The ads are obnoxious and trashy and it reflects poorly on the entire site.

I have no idea why you can't use one of the myriad non-sketchy ad networks that ever other fan site does.

This is the first complaint I've heard in a long time.  In fact, I've been served some very relevant and targeted ads based on my prior browsing experience (hosting providers, VOIP, cell phones, business class IT services, etc.) which has lead me to research and even purchase the advertised products.  Perhaps you are blocking some ads on other sites which result in you getting more generic ads?

Outside of a few times when the ad cannot load and causes the page to not display, I haven't had much issue with them, and my corporate network is by far the most locked down network I've ever used.  I have found if I don't allow the first visit of the day's pop under ads, it keeps trying to show those and keeps bugging me.  If I let them through that one time, it's happy.

As for our actual provider and "other fan sites," that's not accurate as we use Fantasy Sports Ventures/Big Lead Sports which is a top 5 sports network just behind Yahoo Sports and ESPN in terms of monthly hits.

http://www.fantasysportsventures.com/network.html

Any ad provider is going to fill an impression with a non-targeted ad after it reaches its limit on it's premium ads.  Even still, I haven't gotten any not-work-friendly ads in months (after I contacted FSV about some questionable remnant ads we were getting, which FSV promptly stopped from showing on ALL of their ~500 sites.)

Anybody else having issues with questionable content ads?  If so, please take screen shot of it and email it to me at ryan@bobcatattack.com.

Ryan, I've been dealing with the annoying auto-play video ad woman again as of late.

Those seemed to have stopped after NCAA BBall tourney but have come back for college football season.  I'll see what I can do.

Tonight when I logged on, Brutus Buckeye popped up.  I am guessing there is no way to prevent the network from doing that...

Ryan, have you thought about using iframe based tags instead of javascript ones?

The advantage is that they allow the rest of the page to render while the ad network requests are being made. Essentially they allow the ads to load asynchronously.

Most ad networks that I have seen provide iframe tags as well as javascript ones. I think this would provide a MUCH improved user experience.

Love the site

I have never asked the ad partner if they do provide or allow iframe versions of the ads.  They appear to use cookie based ads over "relevant page content" ads so I would assume they wouldn't care if I put the JS code into a page and load it via an iframe...assuming they don't provide the option already.  I've only ever gotten JS versions from them in the past.  I'll send an email and find out!

Have you tried using or if not upgrading to Joomla! 1.5 version? The new release has a security feature to block the iframe, embed, and head tags on the template. I am a web developer and am currently using Joomla! 1.5 on the website I am currently building. You should try it out.
