Agree. Defense was excellent. Miles Brown was outstanding.

As the game wore on, Ohio's defense wore them down and you could see it in the Beefs' demeanor.

You predicted Ohio was in good shape prior to the first game between these two teams because of the Whitesell factor, no?.

I certainly did. Whitesell was a horrible hire and one of the worst coaches in the country. I have made this statement several times and stand by it. Thus, Boals can't lose to him twice during the regular season.

Will always stand by my Whitesell comments from the day he was named head coach. Buffalo would have been better off going with Nate's other assistant Bryan Hodgson. Thank god Buffalo made the "safe" choice and not the correct one. Whitesell has buried the Beefs program. I have to believe he'll be gone after next season.

As disappointed as I am in the student crowd tonight, the Brazilian group carried us. I was apart of a group of 8-9 near the band and we tried to stay loud throughout the game. #23 of Beefs came up to us before game and wanted to see the dirtsheet which we thought was hilarious. We bantered with him for the game - he went 1-11 from three. Brazilians were chanting for Dwight at the end of the game and he actually came into the student section to celebrate with them!!!!

Yeah - The Brazilians were engaged and loud as per usual. At one point we had a player at the FT line and they all started making noise and the OHIO guys on the bench were all like "WTH - Why are they making noise"? Of course they were not aware of the annual Brazilian contingent game.....

Saw that we were trying to quiet them down which they eventually did on later free throws - they erupted after each made one though

D was great. James really coming on. Wilson & Hunter consistent. Baker certainly improving. 5 in double figures scoring. Good momentum at the right time with this team....

Attendance Sucked....but once again a Blue Lot parking pass meant closer walk to Seamans than Convo....

That's why I always take my blue lot pass and use it to get into the Peden Lot. You do have to cross two streets, but for me it's closer and more more convenient.

The emphasis the last few games on defense is beginning to pay off. The defensive intensity, I think, was a key to the victory in this game. EJ really is looking good recently. The whole starting five, I thought, played excellent games overall, in addition to the aforementioned EJ -- Wilson, Hunter, BRod, and M. Brown. Some got more assists, some more steals or forced TOs, some more RBs and some more points, but they all contributed and they all played team ball for the most part, something that wasn't happening as much earlier in the season. Hopefully, EJ will outshine Bass head-to-head.

My uncalibrated Wiz-o-Meter indicates that OHIO leads against the Beefs often increased while he was in game, even if he's not yet a scoring machine himself. I watched him away from the ball and he had some nice blockouts and a few good defensive moves, with 6 defensive RBs. He's definitely improving. I don't see him transferring out. I fully expect him to be here next year and to greatly improve over the off-season and also to gain strength via the weight room.

I'm not quite there with the Whiz. Shocking I know. But good to see him getting boards. Offensively, his back to the basket moves have been rough to watch...like a baby giraffe trying to stand for the first time. No athleticism...no coordination. Some of those shots tonight from point blank range almost shattered the glass. And somehow, he also got one of his shots blocked again. I don't even know how it's possible for a 7-footer to get a shot blocked. If he returns for another season, Boals better invest in a big man camp for him this summer. If the Whiz is back, obviously he plays the same role as he did this year...off the bench...8-10 minutes.

He and Clayton played identical minutes. It was marginal, but Wiz actually outproduced the latter in points, a blocked shot, and didn’t have a turnover. Clayton went 0-3, from 3.

Not really sure what to expect out of these two moving forward, but I do think the uptick in minutes for Wiz increases (at least Boals is giving him every chance to earn it) the odds he’s back. Clayton — 40/60 right now.

AJB must be still hurting, only 9 minutes?

I remain impressed by Elmore James' efficiency and shot selection, especially from three. Devon Baker has also been giving us excellent, high level minutes off the bench. It feels like Boals has finally found where all the pieces fit.

The development of AJ Clayton remains a mystery to me. When was it decided that all he does is catch and shoot? 6 rebs is nice though.

Hunter, Wilson, and Brown were great once again. It's very encouraging because on this four game win streak our formula has been repeatable. So I feel like we're capable of beating anyone in the MAC.

HUGE @CMU on Saturday, then two games at home against teams we could beat, @Kent and @Fiami. 19-12 (11-8) feels attainable, which would leave us most likely 5th in the conf.

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

His lack of development offensively has been a huge disappointment. At this point, I would be surprised if he’s back next season. Can’t understand why he shoots so many threes and has the green light to do so.

Dare I say it but if AJ Brown can come back healthy for the MAC Tournament (which I am guessing is why Boals is limiting him) then we could have a Big 4 with Hunter, Wilson, James and Brown with role players in Miles, Clayton, Rod, Wiz and Baker sprinkled in. A lot has been said of the first four but how about Miles and B-Rod stepping up as leaders and all-out hustling? So nice to have them. And Baker has really found himself. If we could combine Clayton and Wiz into one guy that player would be very solid. Unfortunately they are both "just ok." I will say, the announcer said Clayton from 2 is something crazy like 31 of 42? What the heck is he doing launching threes?

Disappointing crowd overall but horrifically disappointing student section. I don't think I am far off in estimating there were 10 students that were traditional Ozone like standing in the game students (Cellis group) and maybe another 50 additional students sitting half watching the game. There are 20,000 students on campus. The games are FREE. I watched the Brazilians having fun with each other and making memories and thought about how nearly every OU student chose to stay at home for a forgettable evening of gaming, streaming, whatever. I will never stop being bewildered and annoyed by this. I know it is a nationwide problem.

Anyway, as for the game...Love the progression of the defense, hats off to the coaching staff for honing in on this and demanding better results. I do think part of our success was just a bad shooting night for Buffalo (3 for 25 from 3...yikes) but a lot of that was us locking down other options and forcing non-ideal shots from them. Miles is the man as we know but Jaylin and Elmore have really improved defensively.

Dwight sits with 7 minutes to go in the 1st half with 2 fouls and then ends the game with just 2 fouls and only 21 minutes played. I don't like the idea of refusing to play a guy with 2 fouls in the 1st half as you run the risk of this kind of waste.

Devon Baker is a nice bullet to have off the bench if we get in a spot where we are struggling, we can roll the dice with him. He is a shoot first type of guy and sometimes that's a good thing like last night.

Only 8 turnovers! Strong defense and taking care of the ball has been the big things during this streak.

Clayton's quick trigger threes didn't work out last night but he grabbed a lot of boards in a little amount of time. I still think he is a better rebounder than most give him credit for and could be a lot better if he committed to the paint more. Roderick also grabbed a lot of loose rebounds, a big night on the boards from that duo.

Coach seems to have really settled into a starter/understudy or platoon model.

Wilson / Wiz
Hunter / Sheldon
Roderick / Clayton
E James / A Brown
M Brown / Baker

It feels a little elementary to me, I sort of wish we could be a little more dynamic and flexible with our combinations. I'd like to see James & A Brown on the court at the same time more often, and I continue to maintain we don't HAVE to have Wiz in if Dwight is out. And Miles can absolutely run the point.

I thought we had the better luck with the refs. The and 1 call for Dwight in the 2nd half was terrible. I don't remember being upset with a single call. It was a frustrating night for Buffalo all around.

Central got a win at BG...Saturday won't be easy. If we can get past it, you like our chances at making this a 7 game win streak.

+1 to all of this. It's very frustrating as me and my staff have busted our butts to promote this game as a blackout and it still blew up in our face. But, going to learn from it and move on. We had so much fun, the Brazilians seemed to have a ton of fun and this game is 100% in my favorite all time games I have attended in the Convo next to Akron this year.

A little over a decade ago, the athletic department started a yearly "Green Fever" promotional game. It was usually a late season weeknight game and usually resulted in a bigger crowd. We were also usually playing the game against Miami, Akron, or other similar rival. This was after I had graduated so I don't know what the actual "promotion" was. I know there were special shirts made, but that's about it. Last night's game would have been the candidate for this promotion a decade ago. Anyone remember what the Green Fever promotion consisted of?

The emphasis has always been about defense! from day one! That is why some people saw little court time. Even at the early stages of the year, the offense was outpacing the defense when compared to last year.

I actually interned in the marketing office during this and the original “Bobcat Blackout”. Green Fever was a Sport Ad program led initiative used to magnify bigger games/rivalries with a “green out”, while also providing students with coupon vouchers to local businesses (I want to say the coupon book was in the $150-$200 range). We helped them market and sell these bundles to students at dining halls and the Baker Center.

Cellis — naturally curious, how are games marketed to current students? A decade ago we did a lot things; but the biggest draws were always free food (usually what you couldn’t get in Athens, Chick-fil-a was huge then) and giveaways (jerseys were big), etc.

Most students usually left by halftime, but there was always a pretty good draw for tip-off. Even during the 11/12 season, which I don’t think most students realized how good we were until the Bracket Buster game against Asheville.

Currently, a lot of games are marketed to students with incentives such as free food certain games and giveaways for certain games as well. This depends by game but I think it's led to good to mixed results so far depending on the food or item being given away. Chickfila and Raising Cane's were massive hits and free shirts seem to draw a ton at times as well.

I didn't understand the connection between the coupon books sold at dining halls and game attendance. I buy the coupon book, but what gets me to the game? I pick the book up at the game?

I'll never forget the gutsy decision by Al McGuire to play Bo Ellis after committing 2 very early 1st half fouls in the national championship game against N.Carolina. Bo played most of the game with 4 fouls, never fouled out, and played the entire game. Marquette won.

Best and most entertaining defensive effort of the year.

We are getting a whole lot more from Baker ad of late. Don't want to let that go unmentioned.

They will let you park in Peden Lot with a Blue Lot pass? If so that is what I will do moving forward!

I don't like the idea of refusing to play a guy with 2 fouls in the 1st half as you run the risk of this kind of waste.

Good point. Boals can't do this with Dwight in the MAC Tournament if he picks up two first-half fouls.

I didn't understand the connection between the coupon books sold at dining halls and game attendance. I buy the coupon book, but what gets me to the game? I pick the book up at the game?

The coupon books were sold in tandem with the shirts, just more of a value add/throw-in to incentivize the purchase. Since games are already free for students, the hope was if you’re buying a shirt/coupon bundle ahead of time — you’re going actually attend the game. Which included free food/tailgate and the option to purchase the shirt/coupon bundle at the game.

I'll never forget the gutsy decision by Al McGuire to play Bo Ellis after committing 2 very early 1st half fouls in the national championship game against N.Carolina. Bo played most of the game with 4 fouls, never fouled out, and played the entire game. Marquette won.

Even more gutsy - Loyola Marymount's Bo Kimble was called for FOUR fouls in the 1st half of their first round NCAA tournament game in 1990 against New Mexico State. Paul Westhead basically dared the officials to foul him out. It worked. He scored 45 and made the famous one handed free throw in honor of Hank Gathers later on.

Yep, I've been doing it for years. The attendant will sometimes give you a strange look and say, "Do you realize you can park in the Blue Lot with this pass?" I say, "Yes, but I find this lot more convenient." They always let me in. Never had a problem. It's like having a reserved seat in the Convo but deciding to sit with friends in the GA area. Nobody objects. They just think you're weird. Since I'm weird, it doesn't bother me at all! ;-)
