Of note from the post-game press conference:

Miles Brown has been here five years and of course will walk on Friday. Jaylin Hunter will walk. Gabe Wiznitzer will not, and Boals is not sure about Shereef Mitchell.

What fantastic defense most of the game by the Bobcats.

It's not that Akron was cold from three but such stifling coverage. It is a marvel just how much improvement the team has had at the defensive end. Keeping Freeman from his typical double double a tribute to Clayton and Hadaway.

How bad was that officiating--no wonder most coaches have no hair remaining!

Got loud! A Hunter 3 by the OU bench on a break was probably ill-advised but you could say it was as filthy as Freeman's at the half. The Hunter shot and the alley oop to Clayton about brought down the ceiling with the ROHR of the crowd!

My Bobcat dreaming ended when tornado alarms put me into the basement rudely at 5:20am in my son's Columbus basement. Praying all are well if in the path.

Clayton is improving by leaps and bounds. Averaging 15 pts in less than 30 mins over last 5. I am assuming there are bigger programs that are becoming aware of this young man. He certainly could be a MAC POY candidate next season.

Horrendous sound quality in the broadcast. No arena sound at all. Could have been an empty building from what we could hear. I wonder if we have anyone on campus who has some broadcast expertise???

it's been an issue for years. no nat sound whatsoever. I have to be honest the Miami game was actually close to half decent in that regard, but the last two games have returned to their normal horrendous sound.

Didn't someone post on here a link to some classic NIU broadcast of a game at the Convo from 39 years ago? I noticed it had much better nat sound than anything we've heard on espn+.

Too many forced minutes for Cornish. Insane lineup on the floor last five minutes. Cost us terribly.

I said “if” we lose this game. If these guys get two fouls in the first half in Cleveland, Boals can’t force minutes with The Whiz and Ike.

Hell of a damn win. This season could go down as Boals greatest coaching job ever. To do this without AJ Brown, Elmore being non-existent and no big man is amazing. And if Ohio finishes 3rd, you can make a strong case for Boals to be coach of the year in MAC.

Boals and his staff weren’t dealt a very good hand this year yet have managed to create a competitive team. There has been significant individual development across the board plus continuing improved team play at both ends of the floor. It makes me proud of our Alma mater.

Boals played JP 38 mins per game. He rode guys. Now he is balancing guys to a baffling extent. Ajay and Ike are clearly not ready for this game. EJ4 seems ready. Go with a 7 man rotation with Wiz also this half. Kron's bench play is better.

JP was an NBA draft pick. Of course you ride that horse! There is NO JP on this team.

There is no JP but tell me Jaylin Hunter isn't an Alpha who needs 36 to 38 mins per game!

Ok, I’ll tell you, he does t have to and he is not getting the 36-38 min a game. I mean, ain’t one person here thought this team would be 3rd seed at the new year. And yet, you say the staff ain’t got a clue. Got ya! That’s why you are going to work and clocking in tomorrow and not breaking down film and writing practice plans.

I never said the staff doesn't have a clue. I simply stated that Jaylin is an Alpha player and this time of year we need him on the floor for 35 minutes as he played last night. And joke's on you, I don't clock into my job. I work as a freelance Bobcatattack poster and work when I want to. I just worked 2 minutes. Cash money.😄

Wow what an amazing game. Probably a top 10 or even top 5 convo game in my 25 years as a Bobcat fan. 50-40 with 12 to go looking very bleak in just a low scoring frustrating meh game. Then in the blink of an eye one man ties it up...

J Hunter made layup
A Sheldon steal
J Hunter made layup
J Hunter made free throw
Akron turnover (5 second inbound call)
J Hunter made jumper
E Freeman missed layup
M Brown missed 3 pointer
G Tribble missed layup
J Hunter made 3 pointer

Almost exactly 2 minutes of game clock. Electric. And the alley oop dunk from Clayton to was another gem. We had enough big runs and raucous crowd moments that Groce burnt his last timeout with 3.5 minutes to go.

So many great defensive moments from Hadaway & Clayton. 4 blocks from Mr Clayton! And while I am at it...Clayton 5 for 5 from 2. Hadaway 4 for 4 from 2. These 2 may not look like legit big men but they absolutely are playing like it.

AJ is now 6th in the country with a 2 point percentage of 72%, just 1.3% behind the leader. There were at least 2 moments he had a lane to the hoop but hesitated. I keep saying it but the sky is the limit when this guy realizes how good he is around the rim.

6 turnovers the entire game, no individual player with more than 1. The way we protect the basketball is possibly my favorite thing about this team. Struggle to hit the 3 but took care of business at the free throw line. Statement especially true for Reef. Rough night for Sheldon.

In case you missed it, Jaylin had some very aggressive and direct trash talk as the final moments wound down, which caused coach Groce to lose his damn mind. I don't know how they didn't give him a technical foul. I had a friend with me that booked the over and we thought for sure it was going to be 4 free throws, the foul and a tech but they never T'd him up. Ended up 1.5 points short of the over. Anyway, I really enjoyed watching Groce lose it. He wanted that one bad.

It is really a shame we didn't hold on at Toledo or we would be in a serious chase of the regular season championship. As it is, it is pretty much out of reach if you look at Akron's remaining schedule.

Those games on 3/2 and 3/8 just got a lot more interesting.

As it stands, if they beat BG they would play BG.

If they beat Miami, they would play Miami.

Weird.

Currently:
OU would play (6) Miami and (2) Toledo (or 7 Kent State)

1) Akron 12-3
2) Toledo 11-4
3) OU 10-5
4) CMU 10-5
5) BG 8-7 (3/2)
6) Miami 8-7 (3/8)
7) Kent State 7-8
8) WMU 7-8

Ball State 6-9
EMU 5-10
NIU 4-11
Buffalo 2-13 (3/5)

I have to admit, two or three weeks ago I didn’t think this team had it. However, my opinion has really changed. Haddaway has become a very good player. I think Sheldon and Ike can play against some of the Mac teams, but probably not the best ones. as for whiz, he is what he wiz!

If Boals can keep this team together...

Add in Evans. Add in two transfers? A veteran PG? It doesn't have to be another Preston. Go get me a JUCO assist master. If this team had a pass-first PG that could run the entire offense and help create shots... my word.

They're gonna be good.

PG - (Don't think he's on the roster)
SG - Elmore
SF - AJB
PF - Hadaway
C - AJC

Evans (Too good to redshirt)
Cornish (Think he's gonna take a big leap forward)
Reef (Defacto starting PG)
AJS (Solid back-up)
Wiz (Is tall)
Nicol (AJC Junior)

Like someone else said "We are the hotest team approaching the conference tournament". I would also believe the teams on our schedule these last 3 games are not looking forward to playing us.
Let's finish strong with three more wins.

Ever since Preston, our last few PG's have been ball-dominant. Sears, Jaylin, and Shereef (defacto PG). I'm beginning to wonder if that's what Boals looks for considering our interest in MJ Jacobs. He's averaging around 21ppg and 5apg, but that dude take's a TON of shots profiles more like Jaylin/Sears/Reef. Point being, Boals seems to have a "type" of PG he likes.

I'm with you, though. I'd rather have our PG averaging 6-8ppg with the same number of assists than 12ppg+ and 4-5apg. We should be looking at a guy like this -> https://www.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2023-24/div1/players/te...

or Brody Robinson. Leads JUCO in APG. Holds offers from Fresno, St. Louis, and Oral Roberts. Started at Chattanooga. https://www.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2023-24/div1/players/br...

Whoever has the ball in their hands most needs to be able to shoot and score. I think there's a reason the pass-first point guard's gone out of style across basically every level of basketball.

Sure, but it's worth noting that our current PG actually leads the MAC in assists and has a 31% assist rate. I don't think Hunter is the reason the ball doesn't move enough (though the ball is moving better now than it was in the first half of the season, generally.)

Call it personal preference, but I'd be interested in seeing what our offense looks like next year (assuming all return) with a guy who is dishing out 6-8 apg.

Less than 30 players are doing that on this year currently at the D1 level, so it's easier said than done. That said, I do hope that's the type of profile we're looking into.
