This is an excellent analysis. Some of the locals (here) should see this

I'm surprised by a lot of these numbers.

Didn't expect OU to be 12/13 in athletic revenue.

Would be interested to dig into what we're not doing that others are. We often lead all sports in attendance. Are we not eating and drinking enough at the stadium? Eastern Michigan is bringing in nearly $6M more? Western Michigan and Buffalo are bringing in nearly $10M more? Miami similar.

2nd in donations. 2nd in licensing and ad revenue.

Where is EMU getting $6M more per year? Tee shirts?

Football numbers were surprising as well. I would not have guessed OU was 11/13 in coaching compensation. 7 teams spend at least $500K More than OU. Toledo spends over $1.5M more.

MTSU blew their chance. Now they play in front of an empty stadium. Even their new coach who hasn't coached a game there criticized that apathy. They could have jumped with WKU and kept that rivalry plus establish new ones. Instead they will be playing UTEP and New Mexico State - schools 1400 or more miles from them.

This is the mentality I really don't get from MTSU, or WKU for that matter. I've seen WKU fans bitching about playing in cold weather on a Tuesday night. Hey at least you're on TV! How's that CUSA TV deal?

Also, bitching about the weather for a Tuesday night MACtion game is just a right of passage as a MAC fan. Welcome to the club.

You know when we got 4 inches of snow a while back... I know people that live 90 minutes SOUTH of WKU that got seven or eight. Do those idiots think Ohio is the north pole?

Yes, just like people in Massachusetts think Ohio is somewhere near Nebraska and that we speak with very strange accents.

Would love to get Delaware, but I can't see them paying the fines to get out of their commitment to CUSA.

That guy did an awesome job in that video. Very good stuff.

Bring on the Blue Hens....

If we could have Delaware and Temple as pod number five with UMASS, I'd be giddy.

I was surprised by this too. We almost always lead in attendance for both football and basketball. I know that some of those schools have hockey and that probably gives them an edge, but still..

12th of 13 in "revenue" is the total budget to run the athletic department...not the money raised in support of athletics. Our number is so low because we sponsor the least number of sports, and run most on a shoestring. Look at all the sports EMU offers...and that will answer your question. Revenue is a confusing jargon, but is the common term for "budget" to the layperson. OHIO always outperforms our spend, despite the regulars here pissing and moaning that we're spending irrationally and in an "arms race".

Nope, any of the various Ohio accents are considered quite strange in Massachusetts. This includes, but is not limited to, Cleveland, Toledo, Youngstown, and Zincinnati, all of which have very distinct accents, as well as Southeastern Ahia.

I stopped being concerned or self conscious, in the 60s as a young boy, about what New Englanders thought about my southern Ohio accent right after I heard JFK refer to Cuba as “cueburr”.

Very true. One base where I was stationed had a commanding officer who was from Boston. He thought my Ohio dialect was strange, and he talked about Cubur, Africur. He often talked about his alma mater, Hah-vahd. He could never pronounce the last name of his XO. It was Carleton. He always said, Call-ton. I was not in a position to tell him how weird his accent was, because he was a real SOB and would have considered that insubordination. He ragged on Cleveland and when he got upset, he'd call anyone who was from west of Albany, NY, an "F'ing Midwest Puke." So, yes, they are the ones who should feel self conscious about the way they speak.

And some central Ohio residents' reference to the Motor City as DEE-troit. Similar pronunciation used in a couple of episodes of Andy Griffith Show.

Ever been to Harrison County and New Athens (AY-thənz)? On the other hand, how does one pronounce Worcester, MA vs Wooster, OH?

Were there some rock stars from NYC who also called it that?

At least I'll only have a 100 mile drive to see the Cats play.

IceCat, can you speak to the masses on the popularity on UMass basketball in your area? I know we around here who are diehard hoops fans see that and see a good addition to the league, but looking at their recent history, they really haven't done much of anything since the early-mid 90's with the Calipari/Camby teams.

Since 2000:

- 4 NIT appearances (one final under Travis Ford in 2007-08)
- 1 NCAA Tournament appearance (Derek Kellogg in 2013-14)

While the question wasn't directed at me, I think the following, level headed post from UMASSHOOPS.com does a good job of nailing reality: "Basketball was given the keys to the future of UMass Athletics back when we first left the MAC and drive us towards the AAC. It failed miserably."

Most posters hate it...but reality just slapped their faces. Even many of their die hard hoops posters accept that FB drives the ICA bus, and that their MBB program has been mediocre for 20+ years, after a few failed head coach hirings.

I do think UMass will be a perennial top 3 team in the MAC, FWIW to its fans. Pretty impressive season so far with non-conference against WVU and USF while sitting at 8-7 in a tough A10. Especially with Frank Martin.

I admit, I had no idea that's where Frank Martin ended up post-South Carolina.

From the Toledo Blade David Briggs. UMass spends about 4.5 mill on basketball. The MAC teams don’t spend close to that. Ohio leads the way with 3.4 million and Western Michigan
is less than 2 million. Toledo is around 2.8 Million and BG about 2.5. Wondering if UMass getting in the
conference will encourage other schools to spend more in basketball?

FWIW, maybe nothing, UMass wins by 2 at Davidson Saturday. An opponent Ohio lost to earlier this season.

My best guess is that Ohio will continue to outspend all the current MAC schools in hoops. I’m thinking they may not spend more than UMASS, but they will for sure spend more than
than the current league schools.
Football is a different story. Ohio will
Not lead the pack in football spending.
