Hello Cincinnati? Is anyone in Paycor paying attention? Their backups have shown absolutely nothing this preseason. Joe's got to be familiar with Nathan and recognize the capability...

I have a friend who is huge, longtime Bengals fan, not a late Joey-convert. He's telling me the same thing.

So if this was the final year of Nathan's 4 year rookie contract...can he go make free agent money in the CFL in 2024? Or does he have to play 4 years before he can be granted free agency? I think with his past CFL success, a solid preseason and practice squad year in the NFL and of course his Canadian heritage...he could be one of if not the highest paid player in the CFL.

Here's an article from last week, that "the great Canadian" had earned the respect of coaches and teammates, but would probably be waived and placed on the practice squad.
https://jaguarswire.usatoday.com/2023/08/24/nathan-rourke... /

There is still no word that anyone has claimed him, so he may end up on the practice squad.

I think the browns only have two qb’s, both of them run the football so there is a risk of injury so I don’t put it past Andrew berry picking up Rourke, he would be an excellent fit.

Mac Jones is their only quarterback right now. That probably means that they think they can get away with putting Zappe on their practice squad and maybe have their eye on a experienced guys that they expect to be cut.

I would think Arizona would snag him since Murray is hurt and he could be on the active roster--unless the Cards prefer Zappe or someone else. At this point the waiver wire order matters and the Cards are much higher. I personally would like to see him in Tampa Bay because their QBs are bad and they showed interest in him during the offseason.

The Patriots situation seems like a situation that suits Colt McCoy well. The problem Rourke has now is that he hasn't worked in a system through camp. It's rough bringing a rookie to be a second stringer right away if he has not been in the system. A veteran would pick things up more easily.

he is going to be on an NFL roster by the end of today. I think there's a good shot somebody claims him and keeps him on the active roster but worst case scenario he's on a practice squad, and hopefully for him if that happens it's a QB situation where the back-up is so-so at best.

I applaud him for taking his shot at the NFL now. If it doesn't work in a couple of years, it's not like he can't go back to the CFL.

UPDATE: Signed to Jags practice squad

Colt McCoy was one of the names that popped into my head. They doubt that they risked Zappe to get a chance at another unproven youngster. But it seems that they intend to claim someone off waivers.

If you remember back when he signed his contract, this isn't exactly a surprise. The Jags, guaranteed him money, and a lot more money than the CFL was going to pay Nathan. He got a $5k sign bonus and guaranteed $216k with this contract.

And if he had stayed in Vancouver he'd be paying that Canadian tax. Now playing in Jax - I'm sure he officially resides in Florida - with no state tax - Albeit noting that pro athletes pay tax all over the place.

It's a good place for him professionally.

I wonder if that's the same for practice squad players? Because they don't actually travel with the team.

Accounting question for another day...

Apparently Trevor Lawrence has a knee injury, that is believed to be minor. Rourke isn't expected to play, and if Lawrence is able to play, Rourke won't count against the player limit. In any case, Nathan will make a little extra for awhile.

usatoday wrote:
What’s a little unexpected about the decision is that the Jaguars didn’t have a standard practice squad elevation to make Rourke available. Now that the quarterback has been signed, the Jaguars would have to waive Rourke if it hopes to put him back on the practice squad.

The Florida Times-Union wrote:
When the Jaguars signed Rourke earlier this year, it was to a reserve/futures contract. If he had made the team, he would have made the NFL minimum of $750,000 per year.

When he was signed to the practice squad, he began making $12,000 per week, or $216,000 for the season. He will make $41,667 per week as a member of the active roster.

Trevor Lawrence had some kind of knee injury so this means Rourke will still be on the inactive roster but can be used as the emergency QB under that rule if Lawrence and Beathard both get injured. I don't think that it means he moved up the depth chart or that he could play in garbage time unless there are QB injuries in front of him.

I don't know the inner workings of weird roster rules, but the jax website specifically says he was moved to the active roster. https://www.jaguars.com/news/roster-moves-jaguars-sign-qb...

If Lawrence does start, the Jaguars can at least have Rourke active for game day and not hurt their active roster numbers due to the new third quarterback rule. If Lawrence doesn't start, then Rourke can be the Jaguars' No. 2 quarterback behind new starter C.J. Beathard.

He was elevated to the active 53-man roster, but I think it's technically *54 because of the new QB rules.

That's my understanding, too, that Rourke can not play unless Lawrence is unable to play. The interesting question is why they didn't do a standard practice squad promotion, and instead signed him? My suspicion is that Lawrence won't play, and might be out a few weeks.

OK, I hope I get all of this correct but don't confuse having a NFL contract with being on the active gameday roster. There is a NFL roster and a practice squad. These are they guys with an active NFL contract who can be placed on the active roster on gameday.

Then there is a gameday "active" roster and an "inactive" roster made only of the guys on the above roster.

The gameday active roster is 46 players. This is set a few hours before the game. They set 46 players who are allowed to play in the game out of the 53 players on the NFL roster. 7 guys on the NFL roster are put on the inactive roster What I was saying is Rourke will probably be one of those 7 guys. A new rule is that if you have a QB among these 7 guys then he can play in the game only if the quarterbacks on the active roster are all medically unable. There are, I think, 16 guys on the practice squad which makes the number of guys you can have under contract 69. But these guys are under different rules. Their minimum salaries are lower. They can't play in games unless moved to the 53 man NFL roster. A player on the practice squad had to be passed through waivers. The Jaguars were able to move Rourke up at their discretion but they had to place someone on the 53 man roster on waivers, either to move that guy to the practice squad to to release him.

Lawrence has some sort of knee injury. He said earlier in the week that he expects to play. Who knows, maybe there is an outside chance that he won't, but most likely, the Jaguars just considered it more important to have an emergency quarterback or be ready to have another guy as the backup should Lawrence tweak something in the next couple of days. If they put Rourke back on the practice squad when Lawrence is fully healthy then he'll go through waivers again.

I said that "the number of guys you can have under contract is 69" but it can actually be more than that. There is also the injured reserve roster. I don't know if there is a limit to the number tha you can have on it. But it can only be players that were on the roster when they became too injured to play and it has to be for a minimum number of weeks which I don't remember. These guys are paid under contract and the team protects their rights but they obviously cannot play in a game.

Thanks for the excellent explanation of how this works. Lawrence was able to play, as the Jags edged out New Orleans. Will Rourke go back to the practice squad now? My guess is that until Lawrence is 100%, Nathan will remain in the emergency #3 QB position (in the 53 on the roster, but not in the 46 allowed to play, which allows him to step in and play if the top 2 QBs are both medically unable to play), which means a bigger paycheck for him.
