Failing to meet expectations gets coaches fired all the time.

Taking Frank's roster to 10 wins is impressive, I've said it dozens of times, he could end up with two of the best seasons in Ohio history... but whats on the horizon...? Can he recruit his own talent? Can he coach up no stars and one stars? Because what we have right now is one of the oldest teams in college football failing to meet expectations and one of the most talented offenses in college football unable to figure it out.

Who do you think brought in Sam Wiglusz, Kobi Gorman, Jacoby Jones, Austin Brawley, Walter Reynolds, Adonis Williams, Chase Hendricks and Mason Williams just to name a few. All the players mentioned above were recruited by Coach Albin and his staff. All the above players have played significant roles for the Bobcats. To answer your question about "can he coach up no stars and one stars"? Does the name AJ Oulellette ring a bell? AJ began his Ohio career as a walk on. Who do you think coached him?

LOL You tried.

"YOU EVER HEARD OF THIS GUY I SAW MENTIONED IN ANOTHER THREAD THAT PLAYED HERE IN 2014??!! WHO DO YOU THINK WAS ON STAFF BACK THEN HUH? THATS WHAT I THOUGHT"

Who do you think was his position coach back then? And the OC back then? Can he coach up no stars? I think that should answer your question.

I think he's saying that assistant coaches don't count. That is until he wants to criticize one or compliment one.

This puzzles me. Yes, not many are from Ohio, but this seems to be an unusually high quality class. Ohio has 14 verbals so far listed on 247Sports, plus Andrew Erby, Jr and Miles Cremascoli, who are not yet listed. They are currently ranked #3 in the MAC, and #83 in the country, which is about as high as I ever recall seeing them, and when Erby and Cremascoli are added, they will move up:
https://247sports.com/Season/2024-Football/OverallTeamRan...

Only one recruit is rated 2 stars, while the rest are 3 stars. The vast majority of the recruits have a pile of offers, and six of them have P5 offers, with three of them having 4 or more P5 offers:
1. Tony Mathis, Jr - Michigan, Nebraska, Purdue, WV, U. Conn, plus 9 others
2. Andrew Erby, Jr - U Conn, Louisville, Nebraska, Penn State, Maryland, WV, plus 11 others
3. Jasen Kelly - Cincinnati, Iowa St, Kentucky, WV, plus 9 others
4. Kesean Anderson - Louisville
5. Hunter Thompson - West Virginia, plus 6 others
6. Bryce Parson - Boston College, plus 3 others

7. Nick Segarra - 20 offers, no P5
8. Samuel Ehret - 17 offers, no P5
9. DJ Morton - 14 offers, no P5
10. Sellan Bowman - 11 offers, no p5
11. Parker Startz - 10 offers, no P5
12. Dom Dorwart - 5 offers, no p5
13. Kaden Hurst - 5 offers, no P5
14. Duncan Brune - 5 offers, no P5
15. Seth Anstead - 3 offers, no P5
16. Miles Cremascoli - only 1 other offer

In most years, Ohio has had no recruits that turned down a P5 to come to Ohio, and once in awhile they have 2 or 3. I have never seen 6 of them in one year, ever. WV had 3 players reject them to come to Athens, while U.Conn, Louisville, and Nebraska were each rejected twice. That says something about this staff's sales ability, too.

I don't think UConn really counts, but it doesn't change your point much

True. They are technically independent. Once upon a time they were P5, and want to be one again, but currently are not, and don't seem to have a path open to become one.

So I dug into the 247 recruiting ratings. If you trust them as a good indicator of talent (which in general they are), OHIO has its best recruiting class EVER for 2024. Ranked #83. Ten spots higher than any class under Frank or Tim. Rankings go all the way back to 1999. So it appears that recruiting is getting better. That’s encouraging.

A decade ago, I didn't trust any recruiting service for accuracy below the P5 level. It was the norm that the lowest rated players in the class were the best. Today the situation is much different. I computed which teams "should" be the best in the MAC based on recruiting classes over the last five years, and there was a high correlation to actual results. (Ohio "should" be 4th best.) Some schools such as Kent have had a lot of losses to the portal, and are not as good as they "should" be.

In any case, over the last 15 years or so, I've had a long running conversation with Casper71. He has long said that it's nice that Ohio is sometimes able to find hidden gems, such as Lavon Brazill or Travis Carrie, that the recruiting services overlook, but to win a MAC Championship, Ohio is going to need some solid, top-to-bottom recruiting classes, made of 3-star athletes. Last year's class was good, but this one seems even better, exactly what he has long wanted to see.

So, let me get this straight, Nebraska goes 9-3 & says time to fire Solich. Huskers haven’t won 9 games since he left!!

My question is, can we be happy at 9-3 team WITHOUT winning or playing in the MAC Championship Game? Legit topic!

Before answering, however, ask Nebraska, Kent State or Bowling green fans!

I think this is the first time we've won 9 regular season games and NOT won the East. Most years, 9-3 means we won enough conference games to win the East.

We've never won 9 regular season games in consecutive years - DONE
We've never won 10 games in consecutive years - hopefully about to be done
We've never won the MAC east in consecutive years - train keeps a rolling
We've not won the MAC since before MOST of us were born - train keeps a rolling

Happy is a subjective word but I hope nearly all of us agree that firing a coach after a 9-3 season is almost always a bad idea.

However, he was a train wreck behind the scenes.

I imagine fans of another team in OUr state will be calling for their head coach's job despite an 11-1 regular season.

I love it. As much as I dislike Michigan, I like to see Ohio state lose even more.

Yeah, I only root for UM 1 game each year. They've won the last 3 of those games.

Once again noticed the announcers referring to the "world famous" Ohio State Buckeyes. Several broadcasts in past two years so I assume this is a branding demand by OSU. Wonder if it's trademarked.

When evaluating play calling, a lot of people often forget that it is a chicken and egg problem. Does the success of play calling determine the offensive efficiency? Or, does offensive efficiency determine the play calling?

Oddly, people seem to remember this when evaluating the defense. If the defense can take away the other team's ability to run the ball, they can make the other team one-dimensional, and that, in turn, limits their ability to call the plays they want to, and forces them into passing situations.

The same thing works the other way, however. If Ohio can gain 4-6 yards per rush, that opens up the playbook on second down to be anything, regardless of down and distance. When Ohio can only rush for 2-3 yards, that forces Ohio to throw more, and allows the other pin to get after the Ohio QB,, and not worry as much about run fakes.

Ohio has traditionally been one of the MAC leaders in rushing, which in turn, allowed them to pick and choose where they were going to pass, and allowed them to go deep when it suited them. This year, Ohio had one of the worst rushing attacks in the MAC, which limited flexibility in calling plays, and meant that Rourke was going to be getting a lot more pressure, since the other teams knew he was going to have to pass.

For Ohio to be more successful in 2024, they need to find their rushing attack again, and get back to averaging ~5 yards a carry. That, in turn, will force other teams to respect run fakes, and allow Ohio to open the playbook and call passes because they choose to, rather than because they are forced to.
