News broke today that Adrian Wojnarowski has left ESPN to become the GM of St. Bonaventure's basketball program.

I've heard the notion of "GM" for college basketball floated a lot, but this is the high profile example I've seen.

Feels like something that's going to become more and more common, and it makes a lot of sense to not expect coaches to do it all.

It's more a case of ESPN slashing costs.

I nominate FearLeon as GM of the Bobcats. We could be certain he will not tolerate using a roster spot on a kid who mysteriously sticks around for years.

What makes you say that? Why would ESPN cut a reporter who is notorious for breaking every NBA story before anybody else?

If ESPN initiated it, NBC and certainly Amazon would have hired him before the firing phone call was over - they just spent a large ransom to get into the NBA world and Woj is the most trusted news source. Appears to be him just changing lanes and heading back to a place he loves.

Someone ping Jay Mariotti if we want to follow in St. Bonnie’s footsteps with a media personality.

Google "ESPN layoffs." I'm guessing he beat the posse out of town. Not a good work environment by any stretch.

Woj was already heavily involved with St. Bonaventure prior to making this move. He donated a huge sum to their NIL collective and will now be assisting in NIL opportunities and working as a liaison with collectives, transfer portal management, recruit, managing family and alumni player relationships, dealing with professional player programs and fundraising.

I'd venture this has a bit to do with wanting out of an industry that he possibly felt burnt out by, escaping before getting old (only 55) and dealing with future ESPN speculation, while having an opportunity to help his alma mater in a community that he truly loves.

I'm not really sure what your overarching point is. I don't mean that to be snarky, but Woj is generally considered the most well-connected NBA reporter there is. There's no question he could have landed very comfortably elsewhere in the media if that's what he wanted to do. Your post sort of implies that Woj had no other options. I don't think that's the case.

I'm not going to be surprised at all when GM becomes a regular job at schools, and a high profile one at that. It makes a lot of sense, and not sure why college coaches would be expected to have the skill-set.

Sounds like a non-profit CEO fundraiser by another name. It used to be that Folks like that could make a percentage of what was raised along with a great salary to boot. Sports entertainment companies like ESPN are becoming a revolving door and the Podcast Industry seems oversaturated. Hats off to those that are getting ahead of the curve and potentially making some serious Bank.

I'm sure that's a big part of it. But there's also a component that's similar to a pro GM. Understanding the market for players, spending the funds wisely, getting the right players into the program, etc.

I certainly understand that part of it, but how much of it will be the same without the ability to seek a trade in the middle of the season, for example? In addition, it seems as though an NBA GM has more power than an NBA coach, so that should get interesting on a college level. At the same time, at least in theory, the GM could act as a buffer of sorts between the college coach and the Athletic Boosters, who at some schools must be an absolute nightmare to deal with. After all, just because you made a lot of money as a Venture Capitalist, doesn't mean that you know anything at all about basketball. I think this is all going to be a complete hoot and could potentially cause just as much drama as it potentially creates solutions. If nothing else, it should give a new money revenue for former sports journalists and television/radio personalities who are being treated as day old bread these days by the likes of ESPN and others.

They booted Marc Stein to bring in Woj. He's one of their top talents. There's no way they were laying him off.

He seems like an exceptionally smart guy; perhaps, he saw the writing on the Wall. In an age of YouTube influencers, I am not sure that there is much security left in Sports news/entertainment/broadcasting. It seems that the networks can pick new talent up for pennies on the dollar and call it progress.

Might require some sensitivity training and/or bedside manners coursework. 😉Otherwise, your passion would definitely be an asset.

He apparently left $21 million on the table: https://www.cnbc.com/2024/09/19/why-adrian-wojnarowski-le...

Yeah, burnout combined with a changing power structure at ESPN. I get it. The man is 55 and battling it out in a young man/woman's game. The idea that he was only getting 3 hours of sleep a night during the NBA season sounds insane, especially at his age. It's cool when people know when to call it quits before they end up getting destroyed by their career. It's not like the man is retiring. He's just moving on to new pastures to explore. I wonder if he will be doing any Podcasting on top of his new position? Regardless, good for him and Sad for the rest of us.

There's a rumor in Akron that Keith Dambrot will return to the Zips in an administrative capacity. Perhaps GM?

ESPN is not pushing Woj out when they're still on the hook for $21 million. He wanted out of the rat race.

I've thought more about my support staff as GM of the Ohio Bobcats Men's basketball team.....here we go:

General Manager-FearLeon (I appreciate the faith that I have from this board (Andrew Ruck) to put me in such a high profile position)

Assistant GM-SBH (Even though he's very skeptical of me, I'm all about giving people a shot)

Special Consultant To The GM-FJC31 (When FearLeon needs to make critical decisions, FJC31 will be the last person in the room for reassurance and guidance)

Traveling Secretary-Andrew Ruck (Seems like an organized guy)

Treasure/NIL Collections-Bobcat Love (When I think of BLove..I think numbers guy. He will secure the bag and distribute in a timely manner to our players)

Season Schedule Coordinator-OUCountry (Feel good about OUCountry here. He will get us two games against top 40 teams every year)

Administrative Assistant-JSF (Would show up on time for meetings and take accurate notes/minutes)

Intern Coordinator-Cellis033 (We need his youthful passion/energy on this staff)

Big Man Recruiting Consultant-M.D.W.S.T (He knows what we want with guys 6'8 and taller: catch the ball...rebound the ball....no moving screens).

Food/Beverage Coordinator: Shabamon (Just a hunch that Shabamon would find the food and beer we need for late night meetings)

Parking Coordinator-Billy The Cat (A nation waits patiently as BTC directs eager Bobcat NIL donors/boosters to their premium convo parking spaces)

Alumni NIL Fundraising Relations:-Dink Missed Free Throw (Doesn’t post here much, but when he does, his takes are spot on. He will rally the alumni to make yearly NIL contributions)

Academics Advisor Consultant-Bahamas Ezuma (IYKYK)
