Inspired by bobcatsquared in the GM game thread. I thought this deserved its own topic.

Bonus points to any BAer who can name one thing this team does well.

There are 365 D1 teams. If we rank them A to F, that's 73 teams per grade. If we want to include plusses and minuses, then I sub-dived the 73 into 18 (+), 37 (regular) and 18 (-).

So for those scoring at home, converting national rank to "grade" is:
1-18: A+
19-55: A
56-73: A-
74-91: B+
92-128: B
129-146: B-
147-164: C+
165-201: C
202-219: C-
220-237: D+
238-274: D
275-292: D-
293+: F

As of today 11/25/2025 here's where the team ranks based on Torvik stats.

Adjusted Offensive Efficiency: 109.0 (128th) = B
Adjusted Defensive Efficiency: 111.4 (272nd) = D
Pythagorean Win Projection: 0.4377 (177th) = C
Effective FG%: 49.0 (234th) = D+
Effective FG% Defense: 57.4 (328th) = F
Turnover Rate: 16.0 (111th) = B
Turnover Rate Defense: 14.8 (304th) = F
Offensive Rebound %: 27.8 (258th) = D
Offensive Rebound % Allowed: 34.8 (264th) = D
Free Throw Rate: 36.2 (189th) = C
Free Throw Rate Defense: 33.4 (126th) = B
2pt%: 53.9 (126th) = B
2pt% Defense: 52.3 (180th) = C
3pt%: 26.8 (330th) = F
3pt% Defense: 42.9 (361st) = F
3pt Rate: 35.4 (268th) = D
3pt Rate Defense: 41.7 (222nd) = D+
Adjusted Tempo: 71.2 (111th) = B

So - when compared to the entirety of D1 - we do "well" in:
Adjusted Offensive Efficiency
Turnover Rate
Free Throw Rate Defense
2pt%
Adjusted Tempo

So we don't turn the ball over. We shoot 2's well (and a fairly large percentage of shots from there) so our overall efficiency is good. Our tempo is above average and we don't put teams on the free throw line a ton.

Everything else we're basically terrible.

Now, some claim (and I do to, to a certain extent) that our ranking in the MAC is all that really matters in terms of getting an NCAA bid. So where do we rank in the MAC for each?

AdjOE: 5th (Top 3: Akron 118.3, Kent 112.0, Miami 111.9)
AdjDE: 9th (Top 3: UMass 105.8, BG 106.0, Akron 106.2)
Barthag: 6th (Top 3: Akron 69, Miami 107, Kent 116)
Eff FG%: 10th (Top 3: Akron 59.9, Miami 57.7, Kent 56.2)
Eff FG% Def: 13th (Top 3: Miami 50.4, WMU 50.4, UMass 50.8)
TO Rate: 4th (Top 3: Akron 13.6, Buffalo 14.2, Miami 14.9)
TO Rate Def: 12th (Top 3: BG 26.2, Ball St 23.8, Toledo 21.4)
Off Reb%: 10th (Top 3: Kent 37.9, UMass 37.0, CMU 36.5)
Off Reb% Allow: 12th (Top 3: Miami 22.1, UMass 22.4, BG 22.5)
FT Rate: 7th (Top 3: Buffalo 70.9, Kent 48.2, BG 40.9)
FT Rate D: 5th (Top 3: Ball St 15.9, Toledo 23.1, EMU 28.0)
FT%: 11th (Top 3: Miami 83.2, WMU 79.3, Toledo 76.7)
FT% D: 8th (Top 3: CMU 62.9, Toledo 67.5, EMU 70.5)
2pt%: 6th (Top 3: Miami 59.3, Akron 58.1, Toledo 55.4)
2pt% D: 6th (Top 3: Miami 49.7, EMU 50.6, CMU 51.2)
3pt%: 13th (Top 3: Akron 41.4, NIU 39.7, Buffalo 39.3)
3pt% D: 13th (Top 3: UMass 29.2, WMU 32.6, Toledo 33.8)

So even in the MAC, we're "good" (Top 4) at Turnover Rate. Annnnnd that's about it.

So congrats. Our 4 guard lineups don't turn the ball over. There. Do I get my bonus points? :D

Bonus point for GraffZ06. Double or nothing??

Without looking it up, name the two stars on Loyola Marymount's 1989-90 team, when they were the darling of the national fanbase. A team that averaged around 120 ppg.

Thank you for putting this together! I was doing a little digging myself and did notice some of the grades you call out.

I do think that some of this garbage is due to the SOS and will hopefully get better, however, there's a few categories that we are so bad in, it won't really matter.

I'm talking about 3pt defense, 3pt shooting %, and offensive rebounding allowed.

IMO those are the 3 most crucial areas of the college game (even more so in the MAC) and we are almost dead last in the country. Nothing we do "well" could ever get us over the hump if we are that bad in those 3 categories.

I was trying to remain hopeful and not push the panic button too early but after watching that circus last night and seeing these grades in writing, I'm moving into the "hope we can at least cover the spread" camp as opposed to expecting to win.

Hank Geathers and Bo Kimble.

I'll never forget watching Bo shoot those lefty free throws in the NCAA tourney while they beat Michigan and ALMOST took out eventual champs UNLV.

I think Kimble averaged around 35, while Gaethers and another player in the mid 20s.

Jeff Fryer on that team also averaged 22 per game

Concern to me is this: Louisville aside, Ohio has played what should be considered a very good mid-major non-conference schedule. If the Bobcats stood at .500 or better there should really be few complaints in terms of W and L.

But that is not the case and in many of these non-Louisville games Ohio really struggles to not have a double-digit loss. This, to me, does not bode well for little more than a .500 MAC season. And that is not Ohio basketball.

I'm not sure where, let's say, Western Kentucky is on the metrics...

But they are unbeaten, tough, aggressive, athletic and on national TV at the moment trailing a ranked SEC team by 5 at the half. A ranked team that averages like 104 points per game.

The difference between our team and this WKU team is like night and day.

Is that not a fair apples to apples deal? Expecting to be as good as WKU?

This is what I really like about all the statistics nowadays. Does anybody that’s seen any of our games Need to see those numbers to know how bad we are at three point shooting, three point defense, and rebounding? I don’t need numbers to tell me what I’ve seen.

You are right. No stats needed. Just the eyeball test. We flunk.
