This deserves its own thread! This was NOT on my radar as a possibility.

I am of course excited for Jackson but this is just bonkers. Just to recap my understanding of how we got here...

1. The NCAA says in June that they are implementing a "5 years of eligibility" policy that kills any medical redshirts, transfer years or any other confusing case by case situations. You simply have 5 years to play after HS...if you get injured or have coaching changes or whatever, you just have to deal with it. They specifically implement this for incoming freshmen in the 26-27 school year, excluding current NCAA athletes.

2. Several lawsuits are immediately filed by athletes that simply played 4 years and had exhausted eligibility under the old rules, but under the new rules would have had a 5th year, claiming the exclusion is unfair and anti-competitive.

3. In late July, a US District court in Denver, with several state courts following, ruled in favor of the would be 5th year athletes. The NCAA immediately appeals.

4. On August 10th, the NCAA's immediate stay request is denied by the court. I suspect this is when Jackson and others felt comfortable enough to pursue the 5th year without fear of it being yanked from them.

5. But it could still be yanked from them. The NCAA has asked the tenth circuit to step in and grant an emergency stay. Given legal precedent and a clear history of courts favoring athletes over the NCAA, it is seen as unlikely to be granted.

6. Even after the tenth circuit denies the request, there could STILL be a full trial that could reverse the ruling and yank the athlete's eligibility. But that obviously takes time and it seems the most likely scenario is this group of athletes are going to get thru the school year unscathed but the current 4th year seniors (Simmons), 3rd year juniors and 2nd year sophomores will be the ones wrapped up in a trial. Or the NCAA just gives up.

Pretty wild stuff. Two Senior Days for Jack!

Would Simmons be wrapped up in that? He was a redshirt in the 22-23 season.

This pretty much guarantees a 3 guard starting lineup.

"Walking bucket" can now officially replace the Boals kid as equipment mgr.

Was thinking same thing...but obviously we'd all rather have PAV. Tough timing for Walking Bucket because it's not like he can really go anywhere else this late in the game in August.

As I've said for many years now....schollies are now one-year contracts.

He already played at a top 10 team and his limitations there were pretty clear. Not sure why he'd want to risk his surprise extra eligibility somewhere else where he may not see the floor.

I wonder though, what this says for Mitchell? Dude has been there all summer looking like he's having a great time. Can we start 3 dudes who are 6-1?

Heard he really likes it in Athens. May be loyalty. May be a girl friend. I really don't know. Sounds like he didn't really look anywhere else, once he got that extra year. Not sure why we have to second guess it. I, for one, am just enjoying the prospect of having him back. This is really great news!

Dude likes Athens. Being there is worth more than the modest raise he'd get from a bigger program.

Exciting to have him back. Makes me wonder what he'd been set up to do if this opportunity hadn't presented itself. Is he going to be a graduate student at OHIO? He's not a hired international player that is coming in to play rather than be a student. That makes me happy. Hearing that he loves Athens is even more reason to be excited for him. Now, I wonder if he's getting much NIL money or if all of that had already been allocated.

I suspect Boals put some aside or knew he'd be able to find additional money if need be. Pavs might love Athens, but he isn't playing for free nor should he.

In baseball back in the day (and maybe still? I don't follow closely anymore) seniors who were drafted ended up paid way less because they had no leverage -- they couldn't go back to school and there was no other league for the to play in.

Pavs had some NBA tryouts that didn't result in the G League and maybe nothing meaningful materialized in Europe, either. It may be that we actually have quite a bit of leverage here -- he played at Iowa State and his limitations at that level were pretty clear, we're late in the cycle for a new school, and there's a chance his eligibility doesn't even last.

I could see us getting a bargain here.

I saw some of his tape from ISU. While he may not have "NBA potential," I submit that he is now a much better player than he was in Ames.

He actually got decent playing time at Ames, especially first half of the season.

Nah Pavs is a good player. Just a deficient player. He could be a solid piece on a lot of teams. Specifically ones that hide his deficiencies. We do not. Maybe we can figure out a way to bring Simmons off the bench so our entire starting 5 can be under 6'3 (that's sarcasm).

The sleeping dogs comment is more about moving on from last years team. It was one of the most unlikeable teams I think I ever remember. Boals said he needed an entire cultural reset after the season. I agreed. We spent the off-season doing a 180 on recruiting and going all-in on FIBA U. I was excited to see how it all came together.

Then we decided to run it back with Pavs at the 11th hour.

Maybe you're onto something with the leverage comment and we got him on the cheap. I still would have passed. Not because he's not talented. Just because I want to put everything about last year behind us. Make it a clean break and move on.
