Article has multiple interesting points. The one that I found most fascinating was the last sentence:

"He began at Duquesne before transferring to San Diego State for his second season. He went from there to Northwest Florida State College for one season and transferred to Auburn for two seasons, where he helped the Tigers reach the Final Four in 2025."

*Duquesne
*San Diego St.
* NW Florida St. College
*Auburn
*Auburn
*USC

Over-Under on college degrees: 0.5

At the risk of losing all BA credibility, I agree that this is the most fascinating part of this article, and that the chances that this student-athlete actually ever graduates is fairly close to "nil." (appologies to oldkatz)

He does have a degree.

And in fact, id venture to guess that the NIL will lead to more student athletes in revenue sports getting degrees, not fewer.

There's been two posts lately about kids staying in school too long. And the implication seems to be that's bad for. . .their education?

I would 100% agree with this if getting an education and a degree (or two) was the priority, or even a priority. While I'm sure that's the case for some athletes, I'm skeptical that it is for most.

As for OCF, that BA credibility ship sailed a long time ago. . . about 15,500 posts ago.

I don't doubt that you are correct, but can you cite a source for that degree? The only reference I could find to a diploma was that he graduated from high school.

His own LinkedIn lists himself as a graduate student at USC: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chad-baker-mazara-50382a29a /.

He graduated from Auburn and was a graduate student at USC. This article talks about the graduation ceremony: https://athlonsports.com/college-basketball/chad-baker-ma... .

Okay, thank you! I didn't think to look on LinkedIn.

Almost all schooling is done on-line for these athletes, so him carrying credits to graduate with the changes is not a surprise.

What I think about when I hear something like this, with someone going to two or three schools or more, is they will never have the experience I had. I met my wife at Ohio, I have loyalty to the school and lifelong friends I’m still in touch with. These people will have none of this.

Yes, you're the only person with friends and a wife.

At times you make comments someone with an IQ of 30 would make. But I'll guess you may be around 50 given the stupidly of this reply. Giacomo, I graduated a few years before your time, but I certainly understand the truth and validity of your post. I doubt this guy remembers the 5 cities he played in.

The kid made choices you all wouldn't have because he was prioritizing something different than you did. Different than I did, too. No need to be all sanctimonious about about it.

I think you’re right in that your lived experience in college isn’t really happening for these 5 in 5 guys. My one callout is that the circumstances are completely different now. Guys stayed at the same school for 4-5 years because there was no incentive to leave. You leaving for another school meant you would have had to sit out, so even if Duke came calling, you’d have wasted a year. Nowadays, you have to acknowledge that your lived experience isn’t realistic anymore because of the money aspect. Put yourself in the shoes of the athletes today, if you were Mark Sears or AJ Brown and given the opportunity to go make life changing money by transferring, would you not have taken it?

Don’t blame the player, blame the system that was created without any real rules by the NCAA. Hopefully this whole thing in congress leads to real contracts on top of the planned 1 free transfer rule. But for the last few years, you can’t blame guys for playing the system they were given to operate in and find the most money they could in a 4-5 year earning potential window. If anything, OU has fared much better in retention over that stretch than most schools particularly mid majors (although you could argue that retention kept certain players around we would have been better without).

As everyone reminds me, "que sera, sera". The same thing would apply if you moved to a new city every year or took a new job every year. You haven't really made relationships or learned about your surroundings, which I don't think is good. You're right though, if I were in today's system and I could jump to the Big 10 for big money, I would. Looking back, I'm glad it went the way it did for me. It helped prepare me for life.
