While moving out of my River Park apartment on the 31st I noticed a ton of construction going on behind the Front Four - part of the student parking lot was torn up, and come to find out a new dorm is coming to South Green: https://www.ohio.edu/news/2024/04/ohio-universitys-housin...

A resort they are putting behind the Front Four. Like spending this cash and hiding the building.

the key point: "Meeting evolving student and family expectations to remain competitive with other institutions"

I work with a university that has fallen well behind on housing amenities. Killing them in attracting applicants. Appreciate Ohio is not in nearly as bad a situation, but when the opportunity presents itself you gotta keep up with what the competition offers.

Thinking back to Read Hall during the fall of 1979. Yikes.

I lived in Ryors Hall for two years and Boyd one year. There was a TV room and another common area if you wanted to study or socialize. I played varsity athletics and we didn’t have an athletic study center or tutors. I went to Alden Library and figured it out. No training table either. We often got out of practice after the cafeteria closed. I saw the manager and worked out an arrangement. All of my experiences helped me to succeed. This does sound like a resort. And keeping up with the joneses on amenities is why the cost is so high now.

Yeah - what he said. And when we did watch TV we chose between 3 channels. And we didn't have free wifi in our buildings. And all we had were cafeterias - not these food expresses and meal swipes and all. And we bought our books and used highlighters and we actually went to the library to "check out" books. Kids these days....

Talk about higher ed mumbo jumbo -

“We were intentional and purposeful in what we wanted out of this design – tradition, transparency and transition,” Hacker added. “Through these three focuses, we could ensure that we are paying homage to the traditional red brick, providing transparency for students to see out beyond the bricks and creating pathways that allows students to transition from the building to the green space, as well as ensuring we are transitioning the iconic parts of OHIO and South Green into this new hall.”

Well, the door on my room in Read Hall had the words "Fu$k You" etched into the wood...facing outward. The public phone on our floor had been ripped out of the wall. Oh, and the hallway carpeting -- which was purple for whatever reason - was ripped in various places. Not to mention no doors on the toilet stalls, which faced the sinks and mirrors.

I was working with FDU when they built their most recent dorm.

More like a hotel.

But, that's what kids want.
Schools are happy to oblige as long as parents keep writing tuition checks.

I find that I agree with both giacomo and Alan Swank in this thread. The accommodations do sound like a swank (pardon the pun) hotel and the gobbledygook is indeed first class. I prefer straight declarative sentences and modest but comfortable accommodations for college students.

yeah. not having the stall doors was disturbing

from the description

, will feature pod-style residential communities with an emphasis on community and common space, a blend of single and double rooms to meet the requests of student residents, the inclusion of huddle rooms for private conversations and quiet study, kitchen and lounge space to foster community, single-user restrooms and multipurpose space on the ground floor

sounds like Martzolff back in the day with a kitchen, private bathrooms and open space on the ground floor. hardly over the top from what i’ve recently seen when taking my nieces on campus tours.

Very surprising outcome that a bunch of old grads are being critical of university decisions.

I walked up Jeff hill five miles with no shoes both directions and NEVER used the elevator in the music building near it. Would never think to do that. (wink-wink)

Why? Because we have a sense of fiscal responsibility or that we don't buy into the arms race? College debt is due to such grandiose building projects such as this and the proliferation of adminsitrative positions that having nothing to do with gaining a four year degree.

As Elmer Fudd might say, “twue”.
I can see why they are promoting the common areas to meet people. Today with cell phones and door dash, the students don’t likely leave their rooms. In our day we had to leave our rooms for everything, unless we were holding a magazine in our left hand.

Yes, exactly. My joke was about how superior this board's sense of fiscal responsibility is.

I wouldn't necessarily consider it superior but the older we get the more grounded it is in experience and reality. I've seen this first hand as an Athens City Councilman and the past propensity to not screen proposed expenditures thoroughly.

Yep, I think we can all agree that boomers fiscal decisions have been perfectly sound and that they've left things set up to thrive across all walks of life.

That would be a stretch statement about any age demographic.

+1

And Alan, I’m surprised you didn’t pick upon the location! The Athens version of the Waldorf-Astoria is being hidden behind 60 year old buildings.

It's completely excessive and prissy, period. Blame it on the students & funding parents for continuing to be wowed by it and accepting the never-ending price increases. Until then who can blame them.
