Have to give credit to Toledo for its non-con schedule.

Valpo
Richmond
Oakland
Canisius
at George Mason
at Northern Iowa
at Marshall
at Vermont

Pre-season tourney in Estero, FL

That is a hell of a good job with the schedule...especially getting a home game against Richmond. And to have the schedule done and released on July 19, 2022. I will still never understand why it seems to be September 1st or later for us to release non-con schedule.

The tournament in Florida appears to be the Gulf Coast Showcase which I don't think has officially announced the full field. Last year's field didn't include a single P5 or otherwise name school, so maybe that will be the case again. If so, Toledo's schedule is all mid-major. Most of what's known for them are solid mid major basketball schools... Canisius appears to be the lowest. No Alabama States or non-D1s. The schools they are playing are the types I'd like to see us get home/homes with, but maybe we are currently holding out for more P5/Top 25 types.

This is ideal. Sure, no P5 or Florida, but every game is solid and has a better chance to consist of conference winners/tourney teams.

I mean it really is impressive. Not a Todd K fan, but he got it done with this schedule.

Correct...it looks like that tourney will actually have the weakest games on UT schedule, but still, overall this is what I hope we can do on a more consistent basis with scheduling.

Speaking of D3 games, remember that they don’t count against you in the computer rankings so, for my money, it’s probably better to take one or two D3 games instead of ranked team/s 321 in D1… Besides, we have lots of games (30+) to hone our skills as the season progresses. And, this year we will have a bit of a head start considering the trip to Spain.

As much as I hate those games as a ticket buyer, I totally agree with your reasoning. That said, I only think one is necessary. To me it allows the coaching staff to have a game where the starters get a little breather, and they can experiment with different rotations against an opponent besides themselves.

Yeah Country, ticket holders should get a nice home game bone thrown their way for sure… I would say though, we already do a game or two against non-D1 so, what’s one more? And the dreamer in me would even take it a step further if possible. Maybe two away games locally would be a great way to build good will for our team in S.E. Ohio. Seems like Coach Boals (And Saul as well) does a good job of bringing in high character guys and I could see them spreading some good sportsmanship mojo around… OK, I’ll wake up now…

Like who? Hocking College? Marietta? Forget the perceived goodwill of giving Capital a game to get their teeth kicked in, I want them to play some regional powers and lift their profile.

Sure, play some regional powers. Totally agree. However, I have a feeling they have already been trying (Are still trying) to do that. I don't think my idea and your idea are mutually exclusive.

As I posted in the spring, we can still try and fill our schedule with, as you mentioned, regional D1 teams, Quad 1, 2 and 3 teams until we are almost full. Schedule the cupcakes last and trade a game or two with Non D 1 opponents so that later, if our team is actually pretty good, the computer numbers will reflect it (Non - D1 games won't count against us) which will get some people talking about us as the season progresses.

That said, I can't even begin to imagine the complexities that scheduling for the season entails so, just throwing out some ideas for fun.

Go Bobcats!

This is not the final Toledo non-conf schedule as MAC went back to 18 games, so UT will need to add 2 more. Supposedly, according to TK they will also play a P6 road game and neutral court game against a quad 1/2 type opponent. as it is this is a good schedule for a mid major. Kent is doing simialr things starting home n home seriess with Charleston, Portland, S Dakota St, N Kentucky. i.e. building the majority of the schedule around solid mid major home-n-homes.

Akron and Buffalo were able to get into a little higher level 3 game exempt tourneys this season and have a chance to play high level teams on a neutral court.

NIU, WMU, CMU all have brutal non-conf with lots of road games vs powerful programs.

It would appear Toledo has added UAB to the schedule. Man, I’m jealous.

Would have been great to get in that tourney. I'm jealous of all these MAC teams playing in November tournaments. Nobody should be criticizing Toledo's non-con schedule at all...that's for sure.

Is that true that the MAC is reverting to an 18 game schedule? Where was that announcement?

If that's the case, we're looking at about 12 non conference games. Let's say Toledo fills up with these good mid major programs but still no P5 level teams. While this is an interesting slate of teams especially for home games, way better than St. Francis and USC-Upstate, I don't know that it does them a ton of favors for at large consideration. Toledo has enough that they will still be very good without Rollins. Would nine or so wins out of that non-conference group make for an airtight resume? Without some truly name brand tests, I have doubts.

The UAB/Toledo game is part of a double header with Akron/Mississippi State to be played at the Wells Fargo Center in Philly (why?)

This is an interesting debate. If some of those schools on Toledo’s schedule win conference tourneys (let’s say Vermont and UAB repeat, two others win) and Toledo beats them, does that give it enough Quad 1 and 2 wins to be considered for at-large if it loses in MAC title game? Or to your point, does the lack of brand recognition wins work against it?

It's the first ever Barstool Sports pre-season college hoops tourney. Whether you like Barstool or not, there will be a lot of publicity associated with this tourney.

I'm still not understanding how Toledo can find a way to get into two pre-season tournaments and we can't find our way into one.

Personally, I would be more inclined to drive to places like Cleveland (Cleveland State), Pittsburgh (Pitt/Duquesne), Indy (Butler/IUPUI) for a game than to watch a second game against the likes of Marietta or Capital. One is enough in my opinion.

I completely agree. Just look at all the D1 programs in states that border Ohio: PA, MI, KY, IN, WV. Not to mention all the programs in the state of Ohio: Xavier, Cinci, Dayton, Wright State, OSU, YSU. NY state is not that far.
