Saw on his Instagram he will not be returning for 23-24 and not using his final year of eligibility - I will be forever thankful for what he has done for us and humbled I was able to see someone from my high school and grade ball out on the D1 level of college basketball. Forever going to be one of my favorite guys I've ever seen play in the Convo - always cheered for him no matter what. He has always been nice to see and say hi to on campus, and he took time out of warmup to come say hi to me and several O-Zone members before the exhibition game against Capital - he has always been in support and appreciative of us.

With this, can now see Hadaway stepping into a larger role at SF and Nicol backing him up for 23-24.

Rooting for Hadaway, but if he is starting next year that means we didn’t do our job in the portal. Nothing Hadaway showed his freshman year indicates he’s ready for that upgrade in year two.

B-Rod is an absolute class act. Definitely one of my favorites from the last few years!

True. We have two schollies now assuming Miles is coming back. Hope we can use them on a center / power forward and a shooting forward. But, I have seen flashes from Hadaway that he can be an athletic player and decent shooter. Aggressive on D too.

A real Team player - and All Mac Academic student athlete. Best wishes to BRod in his future. I am sure he will be a strong Bobcat alum supporter, and will be a great Bobcat alum advocate for central Ohio potential recruits for Many years.

I'm not sure we can afford to go after a wing when we need serious depth in the front court. Unless the staff is confident IJ and Wiz are going to make huge leaps this summer, I'd rather use the last two schollies on bigs. Unless one of those bigs is a stretch, athletic big.

Nothing but love for BRod. He gave us 4 years of hustle, heart and soul. Great human being.

Came from a Bobcat family, and he will carry the torch as a tremendous alum and ambassador for Ohio for the rest of his life, wherever it leads.

+1. This is what makes having only 2 schollies tough. Hope Hadaway makes the jump too for the reason you listed.

Or it means that Hadaway makes a big jump, which happens frequently between a player's freshman and sophomore years. Of course it is no lock, but saying if he is starting we didn't do our job is giving up on a kid way too early IMO.

I don't think any of our "3s" currently slated for next year (Hadaway, Adelodun, Nicol) will start. I think it will be Hunter, James, AJB, and two bigs. Or we can do the FAU approach and start four guards and a center, inserting Miles Brown into that rotation. FAU's next tallest starter after their seven footer is 6'4''.

The clock is definitely ticking for Adelodun.

As for Hadaway, I like him and I think he could develop into a very strong piece for us with experience. He plays with high energy and seems to be committed to making good things happen on the floor. You don't want to thrust a kid into a role he's not ready for, but I'd also hate to see his development stunted because he's buried behind an older transfer. I don't think it's right to give up on a kid in March following his freshman year just because he didn't make the cut when the rotation tightened.

Hadaway, at the very least, can provide the same minutes Wiz brought this season. Other than height, not sure why Boals saw it any differently but I hope it doesn't come back to bite us.

This. I’m wondering if this is the thought here and why we’ve reached out to a few smaller CG’s (see my recent post in recruiting thread) in the portal. Double down on what is likely our strength this year; our guard play. We just need whatever big we do add to be solid to pull this off.

I always loved the dichotomy with B-Rod as being about the nicest and most polite kid our program has ever seen...but also more than willing to taunt the opposing bench after hitting a 3. Ben will do well in life, no questions.

Any Mr. Basketball that comes to Ohio and sticks it out 4 years is a legend in my book. Those two things tell me all I need to know. A future employer will be lucky to have Ben on their team.

Ben is one of the good ones. The exact kind of player you hope for in your program.

He's been through a lot, but I about 60/40 expected him back. I wonder if this was a Boals nudge? Can't help but think he has HIGH hopes for Ben Nichol, as well as Miles is a lock to come back. Otherwise Ben was still getting 20 mins next season. Youth movement is here. Not that I'm upset about that - I just think you need that extension of the coach on the floor, and off the court, in the classroom.

I agree, a leader in the locker room is much needed. I think JHunter can be that guy, maybe he already is? Hard to know without seeing practice.

James and Brown can also emerge as leaders of the youth movement.

Agreed -- at least from a distance it appears that Hunter has some leadership skills. We need BTC to tell us for sure, since he undoubtedly has first-hand knowledge or if not he can fake it real good!

I am disappointed Brod will not be back. We could've used his experience next year.

Agree with posters above on Hadaway (loved the energy he brings but will need a big jump to see starters minutes) and Jaylin Hunter (he seemed like a leader on the court during the MAC Tournament)

I've seen crazier things happen.

Specific to Hadaway, he was pretty highly thought of and recruited out of high school. He either needs more time to develop into a college starter, or our staff needs to get better at developing players straight from HS.

The perfect point is made here. Guards win in March. Teams with five 6'10" guys don't.

The core is there to be pretty good. I think adding two players that make the most impact, regardless of size/position is the most important.

OK, sort of. The last two can't be 6'0" tall players, but two that are 6'6" / 6'7" that can play are better than the tall guy that pretty much can't defend his position.

Spot on.

It's been maddening how much of a struggle this position has been to find a guy who can give us quality minutes. I really hope Hadaway doesn't fall into the McMurray/Gareri category (Saul recruits). And of course...all eyes are on Nicol moving forward as well.

Agreed.

All four of those guys showed flashes of being great scorers this year. With any improvement at all, that's a very dangerous core on the offensive side. I think the focus will be more on big/athletic wing who can help on boards/defense. I wouldn't mind us taking a shot on a high-major transfer who is elite athlete but hasn't got much PT. Maybe the other slot can go to Dwight Wilson type big transfer!?

I've seen crazier things happen.

Mid 70s Bobcat---Disagree with you that "recruiting" is different from the portal. It's all recruiting. Not many teams out there winning without relying on the portal.
