Like, I said, I agree with his starting lineup but I think you are right that it will very likely be reversed in the position of the guards.

OHIO lost one significant player from the starting lineup (Hunter to graduation). The team until late in the season was mediocre losing to Cleveland State, Youngstown State, Marshall, Austin Peay, BGSU and Western before righting the ship. (lost to others but I consider those teams superior to the already mentioned teams)

Why would the same line-up minus Hunter but a new guard be much better than last year? Some of the guys who saw significant minutes need to either improve significantly or lose minutes to newcomers that give the Bobcats more talent on the floor and a chance at winning the rebounding game each night.

If the new non-guard pieces are simply to improve the minutes Wiznitzer played than as fans we will see similar results as last season. ABJ returns but Miles had some big games and hopefully ABJ produces even better results than Miles but a Miles upgrade wouldn't have turned the losses to wins. Some, all of you think are locks will be losing minutes in the upcoming season or the team will have a repeat of 2023-24. The starting line-up needs increased SIZE vs last season.

There are no All MAC returnees on this team. All the positions should be wide open competitions with only Mitchell and Clayton as favorites.

1) all 13 scholarships are filled which leads to...
2) Assumed health and academic eligibility is an upgrade over only being able to dress eight or nine guys.
3) I hate to be this harsh, but we have cut lots of dead weight.
4) Each position has a two deep on paper.
5) This roster has the potential to have a lot of interesting combinations to fit whatever the game situation needs, as opposed to being stuck with only eight or nine guys.
6) Which would you rather have? Gabe Wiznitzer and IJ Ezuma OR Victor Searls, Ayden Evans, and a guy who looks like he could be Ndour 2.0?
7) Players grow. Hadaway is going to better. Sheldon is going to be better. EJ4 will likely return to form. Clayton will probably be even better.

You're not being harsh, we removed pieces that weren't producing. As 100%Cat said, AJB is the x-factor next season.

His presence takes this team from good to really good imo. His last known stretch of being fully healthy as a starter between 22/23's conference tourney and this past season's opener, he averaged 22ppg. Per 40 minutes in his career has him at 18ppg.

Last season's record and ending could have been entirely different had he not re-aggravated his shoulder during the second game.

This is likely to be a make or break year for Sheldon.

You are acting like we have a bunch of guys from Little Hocking Community College on the roster. You are saying that Mitchell and Clayton are the only automatic starters coming back? How is Captain Chaos not starting? You don’t think he developed into a more than capable division-one starter last season?

Does this roster have question marks…absolutely. But I certainly love this roster way more in June 2024 than I did in June 2023.

How? I would have argued last season was make or break for Sheldon. He showed he can play at this level. Didn’t he lead the conference in 3 point shooting? I’m not saying Sheldon is going to turn into Chad Estis and start one day, but I’d like to think he’s happy with where his role is on the team currently. He’s an important piece coming back for 2024-2025.

These kind of guys are just as important if not more important. He may never lead the league in scoring, but he can help be a glue guy for all the newcomers trying to get up to speed fast. Ideally, we keep a core few guys - like AJC, Aiden, AJS - Elmore, AJB are also in their 3rd year (though I think they're both a flight risk) - and then the shifts revolve around them. But those guys with experience become a coach on and off the court for all the new faces.

LOL yea, what? He led the team in 3PT % at 46% in a reserve role. He made more 3’s than Miles and Shereef — who surprisingly, actually shot 38% from 3 during conference play. I don’t get the Hadaway and Sheldon hate. They took the biggest jumps last season.

There are still lots of schools looking for quality bigs in the portal, including power conference schools. It's not uncommon to see something like a 6'10" guy who averaged 8/4 in the MAAC transfer into the Big East.

Good to not overdo it in a bidding war with someone who may or may not help and is only with us in the short term. It may work out that Kuany is better this year than any transfer big we could realistically land at this stage. Not to mention the upside on a longer timeline provided he stays.

I'm seeing that a lot as well. Also noticing some familiar names a year ago who had to settle for JUCO, finding much bigger opportunities than I would have thought this time around.

Proven size is valued like a QB/Edge in football. I like the bigs we added. I know we're not sure what to expect out of Evans/Kuany as freshman, but is it unrealistic for them to combine for Javan Simmons (Toledo) numbers (12ppg, 5rpg) off the bench?

Both had more and better offers than Simmons did. According to 247, Simmons only had Toledo and Miami.

Are we talking about a different Kuany? Cause ol' boy is like a 6th year senior.

You might be thinking of Kiir’s brother Kuany Kuany. Former VCU/Cal player. Kiir is an incoming freshman, although played prep ball.

My ears perked up...

I thought I saw Kuany Kuany - which is how I got confused originally - is still in the portal as well after transferring from Cal to VCU.

I think we're out of scholarships now, but two brother-brother combos?

I certainly don't hate Sheldon but he only got 15-16 minutes per game last year. Who is he going to take minutes from on this roster? If he's still a bench contributor after 2024/5, I could see him bolting.

The whole thing is baffling to me with folks who don' think Captain Chaos and Sheldon took giant leaps last season? Not sure what more people were expecting out of them last season. Both took full advantage of injuries and are important players moving forward to the success of this program.

Ajay Sheldon is a vital piece of our team. He will help Elliott ease into the season but I do believe Elliott will get more minutes as the season progresses. He may get Jackson or Reef's minutes here and there also to rest those guys. As for Hadaway, that dude is cemented in my opinion as a starter this year and next. He will be a 10 and 6 guy next year which with this team would be awesome. His minutes may decline a bit but he played a ton of mins last year. Nichol or Kuany could see his time. Both guys will graduate as 4 year Bobcats.

Who is going to take minutes away from Sheldon? He's by and far our best 3PT shooter until anyone else decides to start hitting above a 45% clip.

LFG!!

Nice to have “bigs” depth heading into the season. Just feels like a fantastic late add in Kuany.

I'm happy to add Kuany. Really good get. He is 6'9 but he's also 195 lbs. And as a sophomore he was a 6'4 guard.

What that says to me is he can handle the ball and shoot (good things!)

What it doesn't scream is "inside presence or big". Granted Jon Smith was slender and started at center but he had a huge wingspan and could jump out of the gym.

Time will tell with Kuany. Just saying not to rush to lumping him into our bigs rotation with Clayton, Searls and Evans just yet.

Flomo was about the same size of Kuany at that age and he ended up averaging close to double figures one season plus 6.5 boards/gm that season.

In today's college hoops environment "good but not great" = he won't end up with an offer from (name of SEC or Big Ten school here) for a million bucks to transfer.

From a NY Times article last month (quote):

“Starter should be $200,000-$250,000, all-conference $350,000, All-American $500,000-plus — but there are people paying double that across the board,” says one source.

“Starter: $200,000-$300,000. All-conference: $500,000-$750,000. High-end: $800,000-$2 million,” says another.

“Starter: $500,000. All-conference: $800,000-$1 million. Top guys: Well over $1 million. Some teams are getting wild as well with money in the portal,” says a third.

“Depends on position. An all-conference guard could be looking at $450,000-$600,000 and, as they’ve gotten more scarce, $600,000-$800,000. For bigs, what was $600,000-plus for an all-conference player is now over $1 million,” says a fourth.

If accurate, how we add size moving forward will be a fascinating strategy to watch. As it relates to Kuany, I’m ok if he’s not a true 5. He’s much needed length this season with a ceiling for much more as he fills out.

We’ve got Nichols, Kuany, Evans, Hadaway, Clayton, and Searls all at 6’7 or taller. I’d really like to believe that combination or some variation of it can help us improve on the boards next year.

Kuany isn't on the newest roster update.

Do we know anything about Ayden's (much shorter) brother? He didn't sign the same time as Ayden. Late stage package deal? I'm fine with that if it makes Ayden happy, cause I think Ayden is gonna be a beast, but what does he bring to the table? Couldn't find too much on the google machine.

Not to leave out Diante Flenorl.

Flenorl was slender but he was 215. That's 20 lbs more than Kuany. And he was a PF. Never played center. He also never lived up to the hype coming out of HS in Milwaukee. Good but not great player.

I thought Alex was playing football and is a walk-on for hoops?

Yea, I haven't seen an official announcement on Kuany yet. I know June is a big industry conference month for college athletics with staff members attending. That's my guess as to why he's not on there yet.

Boals and Men's hoops posted pics of the new guys at practice. Paveletzke, Elliott, Burris, Alex Evans, Searls, Chase Boals and Ayden Evans. Kuany obviously not there yet but definitely awesome to see and think that these guys are going to be added to an already great lineup with EJ, AJB, Clayton, Hadaway, Sheldon and Reef.
