Based on this list, I count 16 P5 Portal transfers coming into the MAC, and 10 MAC Portal transfers who were picked up by P5 teams, ... so far.

And you found it necessary to quote Graff's long post to share that with us?

Probably a good thing I didn't quote your quote of Graff's post in this post, no?

Has anybody noticed this 6-8/225 kid never signed with Seton Hall?

Hasn't he held an Ohio offer for a long time?

I keep studying this list above and make this observation: In terms of incoming portal players, the list Akron has put together clearly stands out with the most sizzle as the best in the league as of 5/12/24.

But a close look at Toledo, Northern Illinois and Kent State should raise some eyebrows, especially considering their recent history.

Granted, no team has got the *** power out of the portal that Akron has. But Toledo has picked up three players who were starters on their previous teams, each averaged better than 22 minutes a game, and all three averaged 10 ppg or better. Ditto NIU!

Kent has much the same profile. No sizzle, but all four portal players are proven starters (one MAC player), all better than 22 minutes per game and three of the four avg. 10 ppg or better.

Guessing these players fit the NIU/UT/KSU rosters more seamlessly than most, and probably faster.

Interesting.

Reggie Bass is not a good player. I feel like he won an undeserving MAC freshman of the year award and people stopped looking closely at his actual numbers.

Lindenwood seems about right to me.

The OVC is a shadow of it's former self. No more Belmont or Murray or Austin Peay. Certainly not the days of MTSU and WKU being members.

If he doesn't average 15ppg in that conference, the guy is a total scrub.

Revision of history. Reggie Bass and his numbers FAR exceeded ANY freshman in the MAC two years ago. Senderhoff saw something in him.

Is he not a good player, did he have a sophomore slump, were his teammates at Kent who all have jumped ship not a good supporting cast for him? Perhaps everything lined up for Reggie that freshman year but he deserved the award over any and all. (ABJ may be a much better player but didn't put up the stats. His big MAC Cleveland stats came after the vote)

It's not "revision of history" if you know how to interpret basketball numbers. He took a lot of shots and was very inefficient. What do you think was actually good about his freshman year numbers?

Compared to AJB, Reggie Bass averaged 1.9 ppg more but took 100 more shots. He shot .338% from 2, 32% from 3, had a low eFG% of 41% all while using 25% of his team's possessions. Bass also turned the ball over on 20% of possessions. Meanwhile, AJ Brown shot 42% from 2, 37% from 3, with an eFG% of 51%. He turned the ball over on 6.5% of possessions.

What about Reggie Bass's numbers make those extra 100 shots a good use of possessions? AJB is better by basically every measure except PPG and total points scored.

Disagree on all of this. He was a high usage player with very bad efficiency. What we've seen from him since is that he's a an inefficient player as a first option. He was actually better at Kent than at Western; much better efficiency. He just isn't content not being the first option, it seems, and he's not nearly good enough to be a first option.

Buffalo’s Jonnvius Smith to UTSA. I’ve see a lot of the latter landing guys during this portal season.

Maddux - Louisville
Dennis - Baylor
Moss - Oregon
Cochran - Oregon State
Rollins - NBA

It's wild to me how much talent Toledo has had over the years without a MAC title.

Told you he wants to play for every MAC West school. 3 down, directional Michigan's coming up.

Akron's board already has a brief update on their summer progress with their new transfers. There are some there that believe they have a very high ceiling and that their additions are top notch. But for me, their only transfer with considerable playing time was the player we looked at, Gray. I believe others mentioned their pair of West Virginia transfers as well. Bart Torvik had WV ranked over 100 for last year so, if you can't crack the lineup there, not sure you're garanteed to be more than adequate in the MAC.
The thing I think they don't realize is just how good Freeman was for them. Such a lucky grab. Walk on so no need to gamble a scholarship. Being able to not only coach him up for 5 years but to keep him for the last two years after the changes of NIL. Will any mid major be able to grow and keep a talent like that in the future?
Of course, we never really know where things stack up for next year, but I have to think Akron will tumble quite a bit.
Now, we just need an update from the summer proceedings at the Roundhouse.

Go Bobcats!!!

It will be interesting to see who the preseason pick to win the conference is. I am guessing that it is going to be Ohio right now but Akron, Toledo and Kent State might all get some first place votes. I saw Joe Lunardi had Akron as the MAC representative in hos first bracketology. At any rate, since Nate Oats left Buffalo, most of the top 4 finishes in the MAC and most of the spots in the tournament semi-finals have gone to the same four schools. There is a really good chance that will continue for at least another years.

I doubt Lunardi did too much analysis of the MAC. Selecting last seasons champ is just easy. I say that acknowledging there’s a lot of upside to Akron’s roster, but I doubt he broke it down. Probably saw a few WVU transfers and was like “yea, this works”.

I agree with Taiwan Gray is probably the main catalyst this year for Akron. The WVU transfers look good on paper and have my attention, but as we’ve experienced first hand, P5 transfers aren’t a guarantee to translate.

I'm high on Akron's ceiling, but also think the floor is lower than most anticipate. Gray is a 'bully' PG which should do well in the MAC. But if the PF from WVU (Josiah Harris) is not a near double-double guy or better, then I think the Zips will not be near as strong as most anticipate. Also, Akron's 3-point shooting is still a ??? as well.

While personally not a fan of today's chuk-n-duk basketball on the college and pro level, I grudgingly recognize you have to have a solid element of outside shooting to be viable these days.

It seems like Toledo is headed back in that direction along with the Bobcats. Akron is to be determined. CMU is a darkhorse, but at least it seems like that coach knows what he wants and annually gets it.

Kent??? They tried to be a 3-point team last year and it didn't look good on the court or in the standings. I think their late 2024 MAC Tournament run convinced them a return to their past (physical) defensive ways is best.

Sullinger aside (and he's gone) Kent looked a lot different in March than the rest of the year.

What that means for 2025, who knows. They have no stellar portal guys IMO. But that may look a lot different come January.

Akron, Ohio, Toledo in some form or fashion at the top of the 2025 MAC with Akron the 'on paper' favorite.

Man, after looking at all the outgoing transfers, boy did BG get ripped by the portal! Hill (1st Team All-MAC Last year) was a surefire MAC Player of the Year candidate, and Agee (2nd Team All-MAC last year) was easily a 1st Team All-MAC and a POY candidate guy himself next year too. Those were two massive losses for them. Had they both returned, the Falcons would probably be picked to win the MAC next season.
