Out rebounded by a million.

AJ Brown in a funk.

Clayton won’t create in the paint.

We can’t score in the paint.

Reef looks like he might be done.

Princeton would have beat us by 35 tonight. I still can’t figure out how Texas State beat Princeton.

Pretty much a disastrous trip to Myrtle.

Another question for BA posters: what returning player has shown improved play with increased production from last year?

Great last two minutes of that game. This team is quite disappointing. Let’s face it guys we just have no athleticism at all. Somebody better go recruit the playgrounds.

Losing by 9 to these turkeys in a 6th place game at a poverty mid-major tournament, I can't believe this is where we're at. Save the "But the transfer portal...." nonsense - every team in this event is basically in the same boat.

Clayton takes 12 shots, 11 of them 3's....what are we even doing?

36% from the field, and cannot capitalize on only 7 turnovers. That points to something....Got absolutely CRUSHED on the glass.

Just keep telling myself the MAC is terrible....the MAC is terrible....the MAC is terrible.

Have you looked at his rebound rate when he's on the floor?

Can it be worse than what we have? Also hard to do anything when you play 60 seconds at a time.

Rebound rate just measures the percentage of rebounds you get when you're on the floor.

And based on that, it is worse.

It's too small of a sample size to derive anything.

Sure is disappointing start to season. Can we get better? I hope so because we don’t look like we’re very good. So many issues that don’t seem to be going away. And I hate it when people say all that counts is that we’re ready for the MAC tourney. We better get a lot better or we won’t make it. Can that be possible?

And getting back to scouting reports, I'll wager that they all begin with guards backing down or posting up JP.

With as much experience this team returns in the portal era, it shouldn't be a work in progress. We are what we've seen through the first 7 games and that is not a good team. No one has answered my question going back a few games and that is what does this team do well?

I had rose colored glasses and tried to make excuses but this team plays like 5 individuals. No drive and kicks. Not cutting. Zero defense. Pavs has been a disappointment. How in the Hell did Sheldon hit 20 on Memphis? Clayton reading his clippings. EJ4 is a bright spot. AJ Brown scores but someone said it best--he does nothing else. Searls solid but thinks he is McHale. Elliott looks good but no consistent minutes.

It's easy to be frustrated and hate the team right now but it's an overreaction to question if this Ohio will even make it to Cleveland.

The MAC is horrible. This is still going to be an above .500 squad that should finish in the top four and have a shot.

The MAC Tournament shouldn't be the only thing that matters. I expect more out of the non-conference portion but being doom and gloom in November isn't a smart thought process. Ohio was 9-10 last year and 9-9 the year before and finished with 20 and 19 wins respectively.

Overreacting at this point of the season shows a lack of basketball IQ.

This team has issues. They'll fix some of them and they'll have to learn to battle through other problems. Boals has a history at Ohio of his teams improving as the season goes on. We'll see if that trend continues this year.

Newsflash… Clayton is not a five. If he hit four out of 12 three point shots that is 12 points that would require somebody shooting a 50% from twos. I doubt that is happening ever. The issue is that we didn’t go out and get what we needed a good big and a couple good wings.

And this remains the most frustrating part about this program. Will we ever have another Dwight Wilson big body on the roster again? And anytime this gets asked of Boals about recruiting a big he says we can’t afford them or we got outbid. He said after MTSU game we got outbid for Moustafa.

So what is the answer? How do we get a competent 6-8….6-9….250 pounder to plug in the paint? Obviously, our richest booster hasn’t paid for one up to this point.

You either get raw players out of high school looking for immediate playing time, busts from bigger schools, take a chance on athletic specimens who are overlooked or enter bidding wars on smaller conference bigs looking to move up.

There's no simple answer. I have multiple D1 head coaching contacts and every single one has told me it's very difficult to get quality forwards to commit to mid-major schools via the portal the way things currently are.

Ohio still has the ability to attract talented forwards but that would likely come at the expense of other positions on the team due to the market cost and you're likely getting one forward at the price of multiple guards.

It’s hard for me to believe we don’t have as much money as half the D1 schools in this country. If we don’t we better hire a fundraiser.

Why?

It's not that Ohio doesn't have money. They have a collective and do well compared to the rest of the MAC but it's not impressive compared to rest of mid-major college basketball. It's like being a GM in professional sports. How do you want to allocate the money you have?

If a quality big man costs 100k but you can get two starting guards and a backup forward for that money, what's a better way to spend it?

You add in the fact that teams get into bidding wars and you can lose out on potential recruits while waiting for others and it's a difficult process. That's one of the several reasons why St. Bonaventure hired Woj as their GM.

That's going to be more common across D1 because head coaches are already dealing with enough responsibilities and several aren't equipped to handle everything going on now with free agency in college sports.

It’s obvious to me you have to have a presence in the paint. So I would spend on one good big rather than two or three average players.

I'd agree with that thought process as well assuming that the hypothetical I brought up was the actual situation.

That being said, I've heard from one college coach recently who lost their big man to a P5 school that paid him 200k. He was a solid player but not a very high end portal entry imo. Solid stats but limited height and not really doing anything much at the current moment. If that's the going rate, Ohio simply might not have the funds to compete for proven bigs.

That could be why Boals has loaded up on guards with the hope that they'll win by being a good small ball team and go after affordable forwards via HS/D2 route, at least for this season. Doesn't mean that his strategy can't change in the future but Boals definitely sounds like a coach limited by his current situation.

Toledo has Simmons. How come we can't get a player like that. We used to have those type of players. We back in the 1980's. Not enough athletic players on the frontline. Clayton and Hadaway are stretch 4's. They aren't centers. They aren't bangers. Searles is only big body we got and his is just a backup center type. We don't have anything like a Leon Williams, Reggie Keely, Jerome Tillman, Brandon, Hunter, Devaugh Washington, Tony Campbell or a Gary Trent on this roster. We don't shoot that well to make up for that.

Thru six games Ohio ranked #351 out of 364 teams points allowed per game.
Ohio ranked#356 of 364 teams in fg% defense.
Ohio ranked #364 out of 364 team in three point fg%. Yes Dead last in the nation.

MAC is a FBS level conference with all the financial resources with that. Those Metrics are unacceptable. It is not like we played Duke, Kansas or Kentucky to earn those numbers. We did that vs a bunch of average mid majors. 47% 3pt field goal percentage allowed. We get hammered on boards too. We don't play any defense or rebounds. We aren't that great at the foul line. These are upperclassmen in our lineup. If they aren't up to the job it is time to see if freshmen want to steal some playing time.

This is not a Searls vs Wiz statement, it's a Searls vs legit D-1 post players take. He had 2 points and 2 rebounds last night plus a turnover and a couple of fouls. Not against a team from the SEC or ACC, a team from whatever conference TxState is in. Maybe we didn't have the NIL $$ for a better big but Kuany (if eligible) needs to be the primary backup big if Evans isn't physically ready.

Pope was a career 5 point/4 rebound guy. Last night he had 24 & 10. Plus the guy is 6-6, not 6-11. Just sayin'

Searls also had 11 points and 5 rebounds in just 19 minutes the game before going against Andrew Rapp who is 6’10 and Todd Jones who is 6’9. He’s been fine against D-1 competition. It’s like people on here want to blame Searls for the roster imbalances when he has held his own as a reserve.

Texas State is in the Sun Belt, btw. A better conference than the MAC.
