Thank you to everyone that exercised what many consider a civic responsibility - voting. While the outcome pleased some and disappointed others, the citizens of Ohio had their say and will now move on to the next election in November. That's what democracy is all about - making one's voice heard.

We worked the polls and it was steady all day long. At our polling place it was well above any election numbers I've experienced lately.

3 million.

In our county some polling stations ran out of voting cards and began using paper ballots.

My daughter - an OU grad - was one of 700,000 Ohioans who voted early.

Statewide: 57% NO 43% YES

No votes outnumbered yes votes by more than 440,000.

The map by county is most interesting:

Good to see so many Ohioans come out to vote on an issue election. We took advantage of early voting. The line wasn't long but business was still brisk. Thought it was interesting that several traditional Republican counties went "No" and usually solid GOP counties (like Licking) had narrow margins for "Yes." It may be different in November when the more substantial amendment is on the ballot. And with Ohio having the only abortion/reproductive rights ballot issue in the U.S. this fall, the outside money that'll be spent on the next election will dwarf what was spent on this one.

I spend a lot of time in Jefferson County, the home of Steubenville University. They consider themselves “Catholic to the max”. On my mother in laws street are many people affiliated with the university. All homes had vote YES for issue 1 and many are still up after the election, much like Trump signs.

How times change. Interestingly in 1960, Jefferson County was only one of 10 Ohio counties to vote for Kennedy. Athens County went strongly for Nixon who won the state 53 - 47.

Sadly, this likely doesn't clinch the issue.

Arkansas is a good example. A similar initiative was voted down in 2020 and 2022, so the same issue was voted in by the majority party through the legislative process recently.

The next step in Ohio has to be to fix the unconstitutional electoral map, or a similar fate is likely.

Indeed. My parents didn’t attend college and my dad was a union man. They would never vote Republican and thought it was the party of the rich and privileged.

Great idea !

Not Gonna happen.

Both sides do it and love it.

The fact that the guy its named after (Elbridge Gerry) was a
member of the "Democratic-Republican" Party seems kind of fitting.

They're only doing it because they're being forced to by the courts.

California, declared by liberal media to have put an end to gerrymandering, actually did a very good job of it in 2022.  The WSJ had an article about how the practice was alive and well in California, despite their "reforms."  Take a look at this map.  look at the small blue area in the middle of heavily GOP areas.  This is Fresno and some solid GOP surrounding territory, but not enough GOP territory to switch the district.  If the GOP controlled the system do you really believe this blue dot would exist inside a large swath of heavily GOP territory?  I think rpbobcat summarized it perfectly.  Everybody does it when the have the chance.
