Agreed with your earlier post, Mike, about the differences between Europeans and Americans in attitudes toward building preservation. I don't agree, though, on Ewing. It's stain glass windows were priceless, and are now preserved in a museum, but they looked much better in their original location. The fire hazard you mentioned could have been remedied without the need to tear down a building named after our most famous early graduate and foster father of General W. T. Sherman! ;-)

At least no one in the Cubs organization has proposed tearing down Wrigley Field!

I hope they don't turn the space where Scott Quad was into a parking lot or another grass strip like they did when they bought and removed the diner. Make it into a walk through sculpture garden or something at least.

Going back to the master plan of 2016 the new building has gone up primarily for STEM purposes. They show a plan to remodel the buildings that housed the medical school I believe back into dorms.

Basketball practice facility is in that diagram and a new pool/ice rink. New dorms in orange on new south aren't going to happen with enrollment. Both Scott Quad and the Computer Service Center build end up razed not reflected on this map. They could tear down a dorm or two on west green rather than renovate.

I took a stroll up to Scott Quad yesterday and I have to say, I hope they keep that courtyard. One of the more peaceful parts of campus! Unfortunately some of the brick paths in the courtyard are starting to get ripped up and bricks stolen.

3.4 million in deferred maintenance on the structure. Crazy and incredibly sad. Scott Quad will join numerous other historical OU buildings biting the dust.

The tuberculosis ward was hellacious shape and never part of the student experience unlike Scott Quad which had been in service from the time it was built. There was much more uproar about it than what is coming from the tear down of Scott Quad. It might be a factor of less people caring these days.

Without Scott Quad it opens up the view toward South Green and the Botanical Research building. Makes that campus block appear more scenic.

That's not what I said.

Scott Quad is unique, and has both historic/architectural significance.

29 Park Place has neither.

That's why it would have made more sense for O.U. to preserve/repurpose Scott Quad.

Remember the Pilcher House that used to house the university legal offices, and before that the Ohio University Post newspaper and the Athenian OU yearbook offices? Our forward thinking, money-saving university bureaucrats comtemplated tearing it down. However, private enterpriese stepped in, bought it, and renovated it into the offices of a realty company. Perhaps, the good folks at Uptwon Realty Group could buy Scott Quad. That would be a step forward. Alas, I suspect the universitty braintrust would not sell it for sake of what they'd call campus integrity. Just tear it down, and put up a parking lot . . . er "green space."

Anyone else remember the story about Paul Newman and Scott Quad? There are several versions of the legend floating around. I'd be interested in what you've heard.

Pilcher house was also adjacent to a downtown block. Locations of these buildings matter in the discussion. Scott Quad was an east green era building located on the corner of south green. Going east Morton is a south green building by design and going south takes you into Clippinger Hall.

The problem is the American mindset of tear down first, and ask questions later. If Scott Quad had been located, for instance, at the University of T�bingen, do you think it would be slated to be torn down? In many ways we've improved on European society, but this is not one of them!

It is actually much, much harder to build in the United States than in Europe largely because NIMBYists have very successfully weaponized historic and environmental preservationism at great cost to American growth.

That there are people who think Scott Quad, an unspectacular dorm building meets some historical threshold and shouldn't be replaced is a good example. I doubt Scott Quad shows up in university marketing materials; I don't think you can buy a postcard at any of the bookstores where it makes an appearance; it isn't in our commercials during national tv broadcasts. There are buildings worth preserving; Ohio's campus has a whole bunch of them that will never be replaced. But if you're willing to put Scott Quad on that level, it makes it impossible to replace anything.

Funny thing is 29 Park Place, wasn't suitable for the President, but is not refurbished and is totally acceptable for office space. I guess Bats do not bother people at work.
