Does a school have to hold a scholarship for a player when they announce that they’re entering the portal? I know that some players return to the school after announcing, but is that decision totally a one way decision?

I don't think a school/coach has to hold a scholarship for any reason, could be wrong on that but I've seen scholarships yanked for reasons much less than entering a transfer portal.

If I'm a coach, entering the portal is as good as putting in your two week notice. Not sure I'm willing to bring a kid back with one foot out the door, whatever the reasoning might be.

I probably wouldn't last long coaching college basketball...

That's pretty insane. Story here: https://www.ksla.com/2022/04/06/new-volleyball-coach-gram... /

Apparently she cut everyone after "Their performances of the players held at three practices held this semester."

She also reportedly recruited a ton of players before this and it was pre-planned.

I wonder what happened to that BIG commitment to "4 year scholarships" https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/2014/10/08/... /

That seemed to be held up by all at the time as a step forward for athletes. Is that still in play? Seems like with that move you would have to hold their scholarship by the rules set down by the conference.

When another employer contacts you when your employee applied to them and you get wind of it do you automatically fire them?

“Just as the transfer portal empowers student-athletes, our coaches are also empowered to make the decisions they deem necessary to advance their programs.”

That line from the AD sums it up for me. You want the ability to transfer, fine. Schools now have the ability to cut. And there's no closing that door.

Which AD said this? Whoever said it, I agree.

We now live in a day and age of the portal. Adjust and compete accordingly or get left behind. Look at the transfers similar mid-majors had on their roster...

MTSU: Northwestern, EKU, Shelton State (juco), Mississippi State, Wisc. Green Bay, SouthEast Iowa (juco)

UAB: LSU, Georgetown, Clemson, Memphis, Auburn, Seton Hall, Ole Miss, etc

Chattanooga: South Alabama (2), St. Louis, James Madison, Wright State, **Kansas, UCF, jucos

ETSU: Siena, Kansas State, Southeast Louisiana, Wichita State, SEMO

**Sometimes a kid would rather have playing time than win a natty sitting the bench

Didn't they always have this ability? Scholarships weren't 4 year offers; they were one year offers with and effectively coaches had the discretion to renew or not.

At least, that's what I recall. An I misremembering?

Sure they always had the ability to do so. However, the makeup of their team from year to year in the past was much more predictable than it is now. If two or three guys didn’t especially work out they could still hang with them because they had a good idea that the main core of players would still be there and would be enough to carry the load. Now, since that core is not certain, coaches will need to try to upgrade when and where they can to survive in the business.

Jermiane Cousinard - a three year starter and double figure scorer at South Carolina is still in the portal. People assumed when his now former coach Frank Martin was hired at UMass a while back, he would automatically end up there.

Attn Boals... get Cousinard. He's a game tested veteran player. Had 33 vs LSU.

You think it's bad for us/the MAC - it could be worse.

Poor Detroit Mercy can't even keep Antoine Davis, who is not only their leading scorer, but the son of HC Mike Davis.

When your own father can't even keep a guy out of the portal, you know it's a problem.

Or maybe the father in him, wants the best opportunity.

And I don't think Mike Davis is wanting to stick around Detroit Mercy either. He'd do the exact same thing if presented the opportunity.

His winning % at DM is .395 ...he might not be in high demand.

He did decent at Indiana and good at UAB though. And coached at Texas Southern too... a total of 9 big dance appearances at those three stops.

Turns out, Antoine Davis got a cool NIL deal to stay at Detroit Mercy. He signed with a glow-basketball company from overseas. The balls will contain his original designs and he will get a percentage of sales.

Keon Ambrose-Hylton from Bama to SMU.

He was one of the last big-names left in the portal besides Cousinard.

5-star Emoni Bates remains unclaimed. That HAS to be a long story.

Bates and Zion Harmon (WKU) were two of the biggest names my son played against and both have been major disappointments so far. Harmon is another kid that had his father start an AAU program specifically for his son. Prior to high school he was considered the #1 recruit in the class of 2021 but he topped out at 5'9' or 5'10'. greencat, you are probably familiar with him since he spent his high school years in Tennessee and Kentucky. He didn't play a minute at WKU this past year dealing with personal issues. So many of these kids have been sheltered from adversity and they don't know how to handle it when it comes.

Not to steer the thread away but I worry a little about my son handling college. The basketball part I'm not worried about but the academic workload I do worry about. Not sure if it's like this in other areas but our school system has allowed our kids to turn in homework late with no penalty. They used to be allowed to retake tests as well. Some of my fears were allayed when my oldest handled college fine and graduated in four years but it still makes me mad that they allow kids to do this. I keep drilling in their heads that that's not how college or the real world works but knowing that and being ready for it are two different things. Obviously, the "rub-some-dirt-on-it" approach to adversity from my youth isn't ideal but at least we were ready to handle when things didn't go our way (okay, boomer).

Zion was supposed to have ended up at a really nice new high school near me (Nolensville High) but suddenly showed up at a high school somewhere in Kentucky instead, so I never got to see him play in person.
