The offense was entirely geared around Dwight Wilson. His replacement had to try to play the Wilson game. There is not enough time in practice to gear offenses towards the big men on the floor. WIznitzer was not very effective in the DW3 role at the offensive end.

Now that there is no longer a DW3 to gear for, the offense will get a new look. Dominated by guards doing their thing. Break the defense down with pass and dribble penetration. In the Dance there were several teams that the bigs rarely received passes except when their man stepped over into help defense after penetration by guards and wings. The big could shoot or zip it to the corner where there was always a safety outlet for him. Looking at Wiznitzer's high school tape, it appeared he made most of his points on slams--just what he can try to do at OHIO in a guard geared offense. Look at Kent, they had no Jimmy Hall to dominate down low but their bigs were effective in an offense where Sincere Carry was breaking things down or launching a bomb.

As for Clayton, some say he wouldn't have lost his starting role if he had followed Boals instructions. There is another possibility, perhaps he followed the instructions but was simply not effective and lost his time to others who would be more beneficial to the game's outcomes. Clayton needs to find a spot beyond the arc where he can nail a shot at 50% off the catch and shoot and knock down open threes from other locations at a reasonable clip.

I'd imagine this is closer to reality re: AJ Clayton than anything else discussed in this thread. Also agree with Optimist -- Clayton taking strides could perhaps be among the most important components to the team taking strides to being a MAC contender.

Agree...but he has to develop a game between 8-15 feet and after two seasons....he hasn't proven he can do it or wants to do it. I think we all get blinded by those rare games where he knocked in 4-6 three pointers. But man...he had several...I mean several games where he was non-existent.

Correct.

I've grumbled it to myself many times, but if we had (anyone) depth at the 4-5 he would be a low-end rotation guy that comes off the bench grabs a few boards. Can step in where needed.

On this current team, we need AJC to play 35 minutes a game, bc if he doesn't we're gonna go 10-20 and have guards defending centers.

Guys have 3 more days to enter the portal. There could be a last minute rush.

example of last minute new names:

Elijah Muhammed 6-10 center (Seton Hall)
Pavlo Zuiba (sp) 6-8 PF (Ariz. st. / Mayland)
Mike Sharavjamts 6-8 multi-positions (Dayton)
Hanniel Ouattra 7-0 center (Cal State Santa Barbara)
Mohamed Keita 7-1 center (St Johns)
Isaiah Carr 7-0 center (GCU)
Ashton Smith 6-9 center (Texas A&M)

BTW... Akeem Odusipe, a total bust (6-9/230) transferred from Vandy to Kent and still didn't crack the rotation...he's back in the portal again.

His original offer list also included:

Auburn
Georgia Tech
Kansas State
Maryland
WVU

And if he attended Vandy, his academics must be impressive anyway.

Worth Boals time to be interested? Hard to say.

Remember A.J.Clayton, for better or for worse, came to Athens a year early. He played as a freshman when he should have been/could have been playing his high school senior season. Under most circumstances, last season with the Bobcats would have been his freshman year. This is to say he was very young, as far as physical maturity goes. So the issue in regard to him being a force inside or near the basket may only be a matter of physical maturity. This season should tell a lot. He does have some skills.

Unsurprising insight from caravan event in Pickerington:

Players in the portal are driven by dollar signs. "And big men are more expensive than anyone else." -- Jeff Boals.

Purely transactional.

Two prospects visited Athens Tuesday. Another coming today. We'll see how they like our NIL package.

But this is a good thing for college sports, right?

This isnít surprising. Itís why the 1804 Collective and other NIL collectives are popping up everywhere. The big men quote is interesting; but, I figured proven size is the toughest to come by in the portal.

Any tidbits on who might have visited and who is today?

I hate to be the obvious one, but...Hunter, if you were as good as you think you are, you wouldn't still be in college.

Why do you think he shopped himself around? Heís trying to maximize his earnings during his last season of college ball.

Oh I know. I find it mildly humorous that a guy who I watched act like the "big swinging d***" for years at Michigan is now shopping himself for NIL money because even he seems to see that his pro financial prospects (in this country) aren't great.

If that's truly is mindset, then I wouldn't think it prudent to bag on Michigan for providing him with a world class education most would kill for.

A buddy of mine got some tidbits from last nightís caravan. One of the players who visited was from Grand Canyon and another was from Texas A&M. Didnít get anything on the third.

Grand Canyon would be Isaiah Carr and Texas A&M would be Javonte Brown. The latter began career at UConn; so, idk if heíd have to sit or not under new rules

Both of these guys look like semi-projects to me.

Additional insight from Pickerington event:

IJ was not hurt last year. He was redshirted for class management purposes. When I asked about his offensive skills, Boals replied, "Work in progress." Honestly, he was far more positive on Wiz -- said he has the skills but simply needs to slow down. Predicts he'll make significant progress over the summer.

Semi-projects might be what we get stuck with from a size perspective. Brown averaged 2.6 bpg in HS. If heís able to be an asset on the defensive side dropping down a level, Iím all for it. Assuming heís eligible right away.

I thought IJ was hurt? Regardless, sounds like weíll have a hodgepodge of big men with no clear front runner in minutes until we get to the season.

Not what I want to hear concerning The Whiz and IJ. I just donít understand why itís such an ordeal to get a competent 6í8/6í9 guy this go around in the portal??? How can anyone here be happy with The Whiz getting 10+ minutes per game next year? Hoping for big man portal good news soon.

Also shows since we had no media - no one had a clue on IJ. Which is ridiculous to be a D1 program with no coverage.
And of course Boals is going to defend The Whiz to the end because he looks like an idiot for not only recruiting, but playing him so much.

Stunning.

Also if DW3 could only play 24 min (see MAC Toledo semifinal game) a game like was asserted on here- how do you redshirt another big? Even if IJ is a project, you left yourself short on depth at this position badly with The Whiz who was not ready for division-one basketball.

I think the larger overarching issue is the staffís inability to identify and develop bigs outside of Dwight since taking over. Something has to change; fishing year-to-year for bigs in the portal is not sustainable.

As it relates to IJ/Gabe, both are Hargrave/Lee Martin connections. Might want to rethink that pipeline moving forward if the two of them donít progress.

FJC31Ö.you are always the voice of reason. I could not agree more. It shouldnít be this hard to find a solid player at this position.

A lot of you are going to disagree with this but Wiz does have some skills. He has some touch when he isnít out of control and not completely incompetent.

His real issues are poor processing, bad body control and a lack of proper physicality. Big men take a long time to develop in the college game and are the biggest unknown when it comes to projects.

Itís rare for mid-majors to ďhitĒ on 6-8, 6-9 big men because most of them are taken by the power programs. Iím not going to say Wiz will ever be great but heís certainly a D1 player and would have success in a smaller conference. At Ohio, heíll be a rotational player who will hopefully become less of a detriment on the floor this year.

All of that said, weíre probably going to have to settle for another project big man. Either way, this is a 20+ win, top 100 team in my opinion going into next season.

Respect the take...that's what this board is all about. And damn...I hope I am wrong about this, but up to this point, The Whiz isn't a D1 player and he'd have trouble finding success in the MEAC. Nobody can go into next season feeling good about the prospects of The Whiz being in the rotation.

For D1 athletes itís all about putting in the work. I. I would hope this staff has put the wiz on a program to increase his hand eye coordination, and footwork. There are plenty of tools out there. He Just needs to get the right ones and work his butt off
