The NBA draft is a joke. Yes I understand analytics and I understand projecting but the fact that none of Oscar Tshiebwe, Drew Timme, Adama Sanogo and Markquis Nowell got drafted is obscene. Trayce Jackson-Davis was an unguaranteed 2nd round afterthought.

Yet some dudes from Super Xtreme Ballerz who didn't even average 8 ppg went in the first round. Ridiculous.

But they are younger and shoot da 3 tho!

College and performance there is apparently completely meaningless now.

Do away with the 1 and done. Let these guys play in Bismarck North Dakota in front of empty stands or jump straight to the league. Do away with NIL. Get back to actual student athletics.

This is dumb.

To an extent, I see your point. Players with multiple years of production are getting passed over, but I think you can also look at it the other way. If a guy is really producing in college, but stays in college, that could be a red flag that they can't necessarily cut it in the NBA athletically. I agree, guys like Timme and Tshiebwe had great careers, but obviously professional scouts from every team did not want to draft them. I watched a lot of the NBA playoffs, and the athletes at the forward spots are just nuts. Are there exceptions? Sure, but not that many. Tshiebwe is limited offensively, and I honestly don't think Timme would get many shots off cleanly in the paint in the NBA. Jackson-Davis is a skilled player, but nowhere near the caliber of athlete he'd likely be matching up with at the next level. Hunter Dickinson who transferred to Kansas is going to be in a similar spot, I think. He's skilled, he's large, but I think there's also a reason he's going into a 4th year of college basketball and not into the NBA.

All of the guys you mentioned are also 22+ years old. Timme is 22, and Tshibwe/Jackson-Davis are 23.

For reference, Tyrese Halliburton, Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr, RJ Barrett, Tyler Herro and Darius Garland are 23. They're all onto their second contracts.

Guys like Kevin Knox, Coby White, and Cam Reddish have all been floating around the league for what feels like forever. And they're the same age as that group that went undrafted. If you're 23 in college basketball you have to be absolutely dominant to not be well behind for your age group.

For whoever mentioned Nowell (he signed with Toronto)...the guy is generously listed at 5-7 and 160 which means he's probably 5-6 and 150. If.

With the shot clock in the NBA being only 24 seconds....not a good combination.

I’d like to think Boals’ recent social activity would indicate he’s at least doing diligence on recent WVU big man portal entry Mohamed Wague. Follows on both IG and Twitter.

Manhattan/UMass grad transfer Samba Diallo entered the portal. Boals offered him at Stony Brook.

We have a rumor; but, big money competition for Okonkwo. At least we’re in the geographical ballpark with likely more PT than any other school listed.

Okonkwo is from England, so I don't know if proximity matters. Worth noting that he did play for All-Ohio Red before. He only played in three games in the 2022 season. That should have qualified him for a redshirt but his WVU bio does not acknowledge this.

Well, he looks like another solid-citizen type that would fit well in the Jeff  Boals world.  Also, we are closer to Illinois than any other school on that initial list and his older brother is on the tennis team there.  wink  Seriously, I think we might have shot at this guy.  For FearLeon's sake I hope we nab him! enlightenedsmiley

As always OCF...thanks for the emotional support. My ears have perked up. I'm paying attention to the last two big fellas mentioned on this thread. 28-32 minutes per game awaits the next big fella out of the portal. Who wants it?

The numbers following minutes per game appear to not be the top priority.

The numbers following a $ sign, however, do. Specifically zeros.

Bingo. It’s interesting to learn the priorities. Bias aside — we’re a good situation for a big to walk into between minutes available, surround guard/wing talent, Bahamas trip (regardless of field), and among the favorites to win a conference championship. We have an NIL collective that seems to be supporting the program too, even if it isn’t at the level of a P5 program.

Who are we actually talking about? I lost the plot a bit -- who went somewhere to play less for more money?

I think it was general context. The latter half part about dollars being the priority is what I was alluding to.

I think that’s the assumption, unless he got sucked in by the Tim Allen Pure Michigan commercials.

On Okonkwo — looks like he would have overlapped with Clayton and EJ4 during his All Ohio Red time.

What are we learning here? Recruit high school bigs with HEAVY emphasis because the competent ones will be a hot commodity later. You can land an effective point guard in the portal and shooting guards might as well grow on trees. Bigs are a different story.

+1. I appreciate the staff swinging for the fences, but most portal (competent) bigs are just out of our reach. HS, JUCO, lower level D1 (we were close on Foster), and take some flyers on D2/D3 grad transfers to fill out the roster.

Feels like we blew our budget re-signing our current roster of transient mercenaries. It's left us without enough firepower to get that last big.

I don't disagree with the strategy but it appears we're still a piece away. It is what it is. We're a small market team. Going to have to employ some moneyball strategies and really strategically expend our limited resources going forward.

I think to the latter half of your point, that’s going to come down to what the staff looks for in a big. We’re not landing or retaining another Dwight in this era. If we’re going guard heavy (where most of the scoring will come from); finding someone who can board and protect the rim shouldn’t be that hard. I feel like we probably overlooked a number of guys at multiple levels aiming too high this portal season.

Which again, I appreciate but it seems we’re left empty handed.
