You're overestimating Ohio State's brand reach. People here hardly know of them at all and many wouldn't be able to tell you they're the Buckeyes, let alone there's more than one school in Ohio.

I think our fanbase's obsession with the "Ohio U" thing is weird, little brother behavior and that the average Ohio State fan knows basically nothing about Ohio University, and certainly not enough to know that adding a "U" is somehow insulting to a small, particularly sensitive portion of fanbase.

I think it's the exact opposite. the only reason Ohio "U." existed was because previous administrations didn't take what was theirs. They accepted a nickname because they weren't strong enough to change things.

I'm lost.

Maybe I'm just not familiar enough with the case -- what are the things the previous administrations "weren't strong enough to change?"

We are most commonly referred to as Ohio, Ohio University, OU, and Ohio U in that order. Ohio U appears basically nowhere in official university merchandise; "Ohio" appears everywhere. We own the trademark for Ohio, not Ohio U. Ohio State, meanwhile, basically never goes simply by Ohio.

What don't we have that you all want, exactly? Still not seeing why people are so upset about this.

The main irritation for me is literally no other university that simply bears their state's name has this problem. "Where do you go to school? Michigan. Utah. Texas. Nevada. Florida." And so on. Why should we be any different? Because our neighbor has a good football team? Who cares. My school's name is Ohio.

DCF nailed it...we have taken back what is ours, something the previous administration did not do. It has improved drastically over the past 20 years, and that is largely due to a concerted effort by the University and us folks that make up the contingency of people you can't understand. The protection of our trademark must continue forever.

OSU's block O, script Ohio, Carmen Ohio, Ohio Stadium, O-H-I-O, and all those god awful gas station hats that say Ohio should piss you off as an Ohio grad. That's not their name, it is ours. Again, there are ZERO instances in the entire country where another school so often uses the name of a different school.

While that previous rant is a rabbit trail, it is all related to Ohio U. Certain people, OSU or not, clearly do not think we are worthy of bearing our state's name, so they put a U on the end. You don't have to be a dick about it, but at a minimum you should not participate in it. We are Ohio.

I've sometimes used the expression "Ohio State U." when referring to the junior institution, especially when someone in the conversation has referred to us as "Ohio U."

...and alumni insisting that the name doesn't belong to someone else whenever intrusion occurs around them. Put the show on the other foot. If every public school in Ohio insisted on selling Ohio State gear because they are all Ohio state universities then I think the world would completely stop at Ohio State to claim what was theirs. You can say we are being petty but we have been 100's of times calmer than I think Ohio State would be if the shoe was on the other foot.

As far as ZERO other instances goes I think that that LSU was successful in getting the state legislature to keep the main campus of the University of Louisiana system from using the name "Louisiana" for their sports programs for a couple of decades but it isn't the case anymore.

I always enjoy the annual resurrection of this conversation. Lots of interesting and valid points. One thing not mentioned is that in most of those one word situations, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan, Utah, Arizona, etc., the school in question is the preeminent school in the state and the schools in each of those states with the word state in them, are a step or two below the flagship instiution (I'm sure there are exceptions but most will get my drift). to$u in that regard, is a bit of an outlier.

Ohio U in my estimation is more of a regional label primarily heard in northern Ohio in general and northeastern Ohio in particular. My 89 year old mother refers to OU as Ohio U. and she's a UK and Penn State fan. In the whole scheme of things there are way more important things to worry about but if it makes for a good sports conversation/argument at the start of each football season, so be it. Nothing to lose sleep over, however.

No, it's not because OSU has a good football team. it's because we're a regional school, with a much smaller budget, that the state of Ohio chose not to treat as a second flagship (like is the case with Florida and Florida State, or Michigan and Michigan State, Iowa and Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State, etc).

It doesn't seem that complicated to me. We're just not a national school. Nothing wrong with that. Plenty of very good schools don't have national name recognition.

By previous administration, I think you're talking about 6 or 7 administrations ago, right? It sounds like we stopped using Ohio U around 1960, and the trademark was filed in the mid-90s.

I guess I'm glad you all have been fighting this fight? However, I'm really sorry, but if I hear somebody say "Ohio U" I'm still not gonna care, and I'm definitely not going to assume they're insulting OU.

A quick google, and the O-H-I-O chant started in 1947. That's a solid 50 years before we filed a trademark. Ohio Stadium was built in 1922. Script Ohio showed up in 1936. Not sure what you know about trademark law, but we're not winning those cases. And I don't see much good reason to get pissed off about things that pre-date my affiliation with Ohio University by 70 years.

Also, let's be realistic here: they're not using the name of another school. They're using the name of the state they are in, and the state in which they are the flagship school. They're far and away the most popular school in the state, and it's not some wild mystery why they use the word Ohio. It's not like they're spelling out Duke in cursive.

When somebody's name is Bill Smith and they tell me their name is Bill, I can logic out how they managed to shorten it, you know?

Yeah man, I'm gonna need a bit more evidence to reach the conclusion that "certain people do not think we are worthy of bearing our state's name." Personally, I just think U is fewer characters than University, so sometimes it's helpful on a teleprompter.

But I guess it's also possible that people carry constant, simmering disdain for Ohio University. Could be. The last dude in this thread's point was that nobody knows who Ohio is, so those two things seem in conflict with one another. But who knows?

+1. I laugh each time this comes up. This is not a life ending illness. Further, Ohio University, or Ohio U., defines our institution. We are NOT Ohio Northern, Ohio Wesleyan, Ohio Christian, Ohio Dominican, or Ohio State. I'm proud to say I went to Ohio U. to those who may assume saying just "Ohio" would imply OSU.

How about Penn State? Do they constantly go around calling themselves Penn? Spelling out Penn? LSU is another very similar example. Never would LSU call their stadium Louisiana stadium or just spell out Louisiana. It would be absurd to do so.

You probably know about as much about trademark law as I do, but I can tell you that some of the OSU lawyers were afraid that if we won the lawsuit that they would have been prohibited from using that chant and from Script Ohio. But, the agreement we signed with them expressly gives them the right to continue to do Script Ohio and a few other things they have done "traditionally." I don't have the document right in front of me at the moment, but I don't think it specifically mentioned the O-H-I-O chant, but in my mind that chant does seem to go against the spirit of the agreement. Bob Glidden, who is one of my favorite OHIO presidents, was given some grief by OHIO hardliners for signing that agreement, because it appeared we were going to win the battle in the courtroom. [For the record, I actually gave OU Legal at that time a few clippings showing we were referred to athletically as "Ohio" in some newspapers as early as the late 1890s.]

It isn't insecure to want to be able to use your own name and not have others use it.

The connection is obvious...you are baffled at my suggestion that people think we aren't worthy of the name Ohio and ask for evidence all while spouting reasons why we aren't worthy of the name. That we shouldn't be upset by those who refuse to just call us Ohio, or refuse to stop calling themselves Ohio, because we're just a itty bitty thing and we should just get out of their way.

I also cited 2 other examples with Pennsylvania and Louisiana. The fact this is not an issue anywhere else on the planet can't just be easily dismissed.

I didn't say we weren't worthy at all.

I explained why I think we don't have the name recognition that other schools with a "single state name" have.

What's that have to do with worth? I'm not advocating we change our name, just explaining why I don't think we have the name recognition you stated we do not have.

And yes, it baffles me when people assume ill-will or nefarious motives when there's a perfectly benign, logical explanation that makes more sense.

Just want to point out that 99% of the time you see #RollBobbies. It was created on social media and I've personally never seen it used outside of social media. I'm sure there's probably some cheap t-shirts out there but that's about it. Unless I'm completely unaware.

I also want to add that most of the time when somebody says Ohio U, people know they are referring to us. When somebody mentions just "Ohio", not sure the same can be said.

I never refer to OU as Ohio when somebody asks me where I went. It just doesn't seem specific enough. As sad as that may seem to some its just the truth, at least in my age group (class of 2015). Its almost always OU or Ohio U or Ohio University.

I was at the Bengals Welcome Back event on Saturday. I wore an attack cat tank top. Everyone who acknowledged it did it with a "Roll Bobbies" (they were all younger than me) except the two OU interns working one of the kids activity areas.

A lot of OU folks reach out to me on LinkedIn. The most common thing they say in reference to OU is "OU OH Yeah", but more recent grads and current students have definitely started peppering in "Roll Bobbies."

How about Penn State? Do they constantly go around calling themselves Penn? Spelling out Penn? LSU is another very similar example. Never would LSU call their stadium Louisiana stadium or just spell out Louisiana. It would be absurd to do so.

I was wearing an OU hat at the grocery yesterday and someone shouted GO BOBBIES at me.. Immediately thought of how angry that would make some of the people in this thread.
