To me Cornish is on par with Mason McMurray. Good enough to be a stopgap in the rotation, but doesn't do anything particularly well and consistent enough. It's not bad to have that on the roster. But consider the following:

-He is in the same class as Aidan Hadaway, for whom he was the backup.
-He was behind AJB in the rotation when the latter was healthy, and now due to AJ's injury and hopeful redshirt, he has less eligibility than AJB.
-The way some people talk around here, the best shooter in the program may be Ben Nichol, who is two classes behind Ike.

From our vantage point, you can see how there may be three players with more upside in the production we could reasonably ask of Ike. All other things close to being equal, you roll with the younger players.

Everyone I've seen us connected to on transfer portal Twitter has been mentioned in this thread. Here's where I think we should go with three schollies remaining:

-A wing player/big guard who excels in at least one specialty (Defense, threes, etc). Don't care how many years eligibility remain.
-A rotation-ready frontcourt player. Don't care if it's a seven footer or a 6'7" Kevin Mickle type. Preferably at least two years eligibility remaining.
-A rotation-ready true point guard. Preferable at least two years remaining.

Is freshman recruiting closed for us? According to verbalcommits, we have offers out to a few high school seniors who are uncommitted. I've seen video of Damone King from Kentucky and Chris Mason from Oklahoma. Mason looks like a Tony Campbell clone and King is a definitive alpha lead guard. We did at one point put out on offer to My'Kel Jenkins who recently tweeted something to the effect of 'still looking for a home'.

In this era of CBB, it would be great to have an insider to get the scoop on who is visiting/who has.

Of the players we've been connected to -- Tom House (FSU/3PT Wing), Daniel Nixon (JUCO/post), and Drew Thelwell (Morehead St/PG) interest me. The latter seems like a stretch. I could see Thelwell following his coach to James Madison or ending his playing career at USF/UCF, given he's from Orlando.

House played AAU ball with Sheldon and EJ4/from Centerville; we've previously offered. Nixon has ties to Boals from NY/Stony Brook time. Hoping those connections help and makes them realistic options.

No one is saying Ike should be replacing AJB and EJ4’s minutes. He’s nothing more than a role/bench player who showed upside towards the end, but there’s still value in that and that’s the point MDWST, Graff, and myself are trying to make.

We can assume it’s easy to replace in the portal, but we really don’t know and our track record hasn’t proved we’re capable of doing so.

I'm not suggesting we replace Cornish's role in the portal. Cornish's role projects to be our 4th wing in the rotation, and easily could be 5th or even 6th, depending what happens with Burris/Nicol. And that's assuming we add nobody from the portal. You all keep saying "there's still vale in that" -- I disagree. When I look at our roster, that's just not a need.

You can easily replace 10 minutes on the wing from Cornish, because you get 1) your starter back in AJB 2) (Presumed) improvement from Hadaway 3) EJ4 without a broken finger 4) Maybe something from Nicol/Burris.

His roster spot is more valuable going to someone who can potentially fill a bigger need, even if that person ends up not being good. Cornish is redundant at best. A big or ballhandler we bring in has a path to impact the team more. Even if the liklihood of that is 5% or less.

Burris needs a redshirt year. There are over 1500 names in the portal and as the coaching musical chairs keeps up, there will be even more. Plus some incoming freshmen at some schools out there pi55ed off that the coach who recruited them won't be there end up de-committing. Wiz and Cornish and Bahamas hitting the road creates huge opportunities for a banner season upcoming. Every year there is a mid-major that busts out big. One year it was FAU. Then it was James Madison. Why not the Bobcats? We're due.

Here's a guy I always had a feeling would go portaling. Sage Tolentino from Cincinnati. 7'1'', went to Hamilton High School near Cincinnati. Little, and I mean VERY little, used player. At one point was an Auburn commit. Three years eligibility.

Define "busts out big". James Madison was good this year but last I checked they lost in the 2nd round of the NCAA. Is that "busting out"? If so, we've done that 3 times already in the last 15 years. Does that make us "due"?

And I'll say it again. The more portal guys you add, the more portal guys you will be required to continue to get year after year after year. Why? Because a) They've already shown the willingness to jump ship so the likelihood they leave again is high (see: Cornish, Ike) b) They generally only have 1-2 years of eligibility remaining so they immediately create a new roster hole the following years.

Adding one or two, here or there, to finish a roster and fill gaps? Yep.
Adding 4-5 guys via the portal? Recipe for disaster, unless you really enjoy the Kentucky-style brand of basketball where you get an entirely new roster every year with zero team-building, zero experience, zero continuity, zero culture - oh and you'll either burn out or run out the coaching staff in the process.

Sounds about right. Does anyone know of other PG’s have we been connected to besides Thelwell and the Hofstra (likely moving up) PG?

Did Cornish sleep with your wife and never send her home?

Responses to this continued nonsense isn't worth the bandwidth.

Players develop all the time.

That's it. Stop it there. To say anything else about a 19 year old is flat-out dumb.

And they were never a top 100 recruit, your idea that he isn't good at anything, was never good at anything, and will never be good at anything again is ludicrous and I can't believe it's gone on for so long.

Even if we take this nonsensical rambling at face value, TODAY, based on his one year here, to you - he isn't worth more than a walk-on guard role. Were you advocating so passionately for Hadaway to be cast aside for doing absolutely nothing until last season? You wouldn't even have given him a chance.

You continuing to say there is very little upside to keeping him is flat out hilarious. The upside is he develops into his Top 100 recruit status.

As always, comical.

JMU went 32-4
FAU went 35-4 (eliminated Kansas State and Tennessee)

Who around here would be against winning 32 or 35 games next season?

But I do agree with not putting all your eggs in the rent-a-player basket.

Kentucky and Arkansas were the two biggest underachievers this past season.
Arky was ranked #14 when the season started, didn't go .500 or make the NIT.
UK had ten losses and were eliminated by Oakland.

Mike Sharavjamts from San Francisco is in the portal. Played one year at Dayton and one at USF. 6'8'' 190 guard. Played high school ball in Xenia and Willoughby. Would be an upgrade from Cornish. From Mongolia.

The connection? His dad is apparently stateside and is an advisor/stepdad/handler/guardian/somehow closely connected to Ghana Solongo, a seven footer in Michigan who we were the first to offer. Might be goodwill built with the dad already. Ghana is also a teammate of Jon Sanderson's son.

It's all connected. Circle of life.

Probably a pipe dream, but Purdue's Ethan Morton is in the portal. Lockdown defender who just couldn't get on the court this year. Former Pennsylvania Mr. Basketball, from the Pittsburgh area. Would get him a good bit closer to home and loads of playing time. He could do what Brandon Newman did in transferring to Western Kentucky and leading them to the tournament. One year remaining. Would be a hell of a way to use the Ike Cornish scholarship, replacing one former B1G wing with another.

Pipe dream likely, but it still hasn’t prevented the staff from what looks like at least shooting their shot. Both Boals and Lee started following him.

Boals also started following D2/JUCO PG Alan Swenson, brother of Stetson’s Stephan Swenson. Couldn’t find his ND College stats, but he’d fit the bill as a backup facilitator -> https://www.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2019-20/div1/players/al...

Only 1 year. I’m wondering since we kept most of our roster intact, we’ll see holes filled with players that aren’t as glamorous on the surface but fill the need. It’s probably that much harder to sway a kid here with limited PT and whatever we have left to spend.

You should write another 42 posts crying about it.

Because I’m obviously the one angry. Me. The one telling the goober foaming at the mouth on every thread about a 19 year old to relax means I’m angry. Yes. Very smart. As always. Very smart. LMAO.

The level of projection here is hall of fame worthy.

McMurray's high water mark after leaving was 11ppg at a low-low level NAIA in Brunswick Georgia. I would venture to think Cornish would be a super-star against that level of competition. At least 25ppg, maybe more.

Knowing what I know about Morton, while like all players he would like to have money, he really wants to play after not getting to this year beyond mop-up duty and being the sub defender in defense only situations. If Boals can sell him on playing time and the ability to set the defensive tone for a whole team while leading them to the tournament (and this roster is the favorite in the conference, I would say), we've got as good a shot at anybody. If there's a choice between getting a good payday while being only a rotation piece or taking less money with the opportunity to lead the team, he would without a doubt prefer the latter.

I dunno, man. I just read through this thread again and the discussion about Cornish's transfer seems pretty civil to me.

I'll leave it at that , and let folks make up their own minds about who seems oddly angry about this whole thing.

Only 1 year. I’m wondering since we kept most of our roster intact, we’ll see holes filled with players that aren’t as glamorous on the surface but fill the need. It’s probably that much harder to sway a kid here with limited PT and whatever we have left to spend.

I feel like our biggest hurdle this portal season is PT. Someone like Morton would expect to come in and start again at our level. I can’t see Boals sitting Hadaway and AJC isn’t even a conversation.

I don't think Boals is going to plug a guy in as a starter, just because his former team played in a power conference. Wiz and Cornish transferred from power conference teams and didn't start.

If there is a choice between having Wiz or Cornish back, I'm going to shock the world and pick Wiz. 7-foot-tall humans don't grow on trees. The portal is beyond full of 6-5 wing players that averaged 4ppg. Many of them are from pretty good academic schools too. A nation would not have to "await."
